Reviews summary
This summary was created by AI, based on recent reviews.
Powered by AI
The Killeshin Hotel is frequently commended for its cleanliness, boasting immaculate rooms and well-kept facilities, though a few guests have pointed out minor shortcomings. While the hotel's value for money garners mixed reviews, many are content with the affordable options. The spacious and comfortable rooms are often praised, but some visitors have encountered issues with room maintenance. Guests generally enjoy the range of amenities, including the varied breakfast and amiable staff; however, the pool area could benefit from enhancements.
The service is acknowledged for its friendliness and professionalism, but some have noted service delays, especially in dining. The hotel's atmosphere is described as lively and welcoming, with modern touches and entertaining live music events adding to its charm. Situated conveniently, the Killeshin Hotel offers easy access to local attractions and the town center.

Detailed Reviews
We stayed for 5 nights on a package deal that included B&B and a 3-course meal on 2 evenings of our choice. The food was so good that we ate there on the remaining 3 evenings. The menu was varied and the portions generous. Table service for breakfast with a small table set aside with boxes of cereal (alas, no cornflakes though 🙁), some fresh fruit salad, yoghurt and apples. The beds were soooo comfortable and everywhere was impeccably clean. Staff were so friendly & efficient with all wearing face masks and sanitizer widely available. There is a little coffee dock in the reception area where some friends & family who live in the area came to meet us over the course of our stay for a “socially-distant” coffee and a scone/pastry. While not in the centre of Portlaoise, it’s only about a 5 minute drive away, and is a very central base to visit the National Stud & Japanese Gardens, Emo Court, Newbridge Jewellery, etc. Thank you to all the staff in the hotel for making our stay so enjoyable. We hope to return at some point in the future 👏

Dear IslanderAchill, Thank you for this wonderful review. We were delighted to read that you had such a positive experience with us and it's great to see our efforts to keep in line with the government guidelines and restrictions is being noticed by our guests. I have made careful note about the cornflakes, my apologies for that. These are challenging times for our industry and your kindness and recognition of our team and efforts are greatly appreciated. We were so pleased to see you were able to enjoy some of the wonderful local attractions on our doorstep. Once again, our heartfelt thanks and we look forward to welcoming you back on your next visit. Kind regards, Ciaran

The website pictures of this hotel do not lie. Upon first impression, the hotel is very modern and beautifully decorated.
There is ample free parking in the underground car parks, you can then travel by lift straight to your floor or indeed reception.
Arriving in the lobby, it is wonderfully decorated and high attention to detail in the fixture and fittings. The welcome by the reception staff was very engaging until there was an issue. I booked my 3-night stay direct through their website, clicking the extra to add breakfast and being happy with the overall price- purchased it. However, I was told I had in fact only purchased 1 days breakfast. I queried this as there is no possible feature on the website to select how many days breakfast you required- but alas, realising I was not going to get a resolution politely accepted.
Upon entering the room I was first impressed by the size, there was a double bed and a single bed and a nice large desk area. There were two comfortable chairs, a large TV and a nice modern bathroom. On first impression a lovely decorated room as in the hotel pictures. But signs of wear and tear were obvious with stains on the carpet, bubbling on the desk and tears on the desk pad etc. The light outside my room was also on a constant strobe effect which took a day to be fixed and the noise of the inconsiderate family down the hall was evident.
Breakfast was a fine affair again in the nice restaurant, now most of the food is ordered due to COVID. A few items of individually wrapped things available to select yourself. But a very tastey cooked breakfast. I only had breakfast one on day...
The hotel itself is not too far by car out of the town, but alas not too much to do in Portlaoise.
Overall, I would stay here again, if I had the need to be in Portlaoise. It's a lovely hotel which could be amazing if things were kept maintained.

I previously stayed in this hotel in 2010. I have returned from a visit again last week The decor is very dated and worn. It hasn't changed since my last visit. Upholstery is very stained and dirty. Apart from this the hotels staff are very attentive and friendly. The bathroom although it's dated it was spotlessly clean. The bed and bedding was ok but certainly not luxurious (flat pillows flat duvets). Breakfast was of a very high standard refilling everything right up to the last minutes of service. They needed at least 3 more staff on duty. Even though the staff were extremely run off there feet they still managed to be very polite. I had to go down to the reception regarding the heating in our room not working. By the time I got back to the room it was fixed. Great service. We used the swimming pool on my previous visit the swimming pool was very cold. It was at a lovely temperature this time. We stayed here on a Lidl break and it was great value. I tried to book direct with the hotel before booking with Lidl but the hotel could not match the Lidl price. Overall this is a lovely hotel it just needs a refurbishment. The food and staff are fab. Natalie served us dinner. Tori served us breakfast.

My husband surprised me with a night stay at this hotel for our 15th year anniversary, it was our first night away form the kids since May last year. When we arrived the woman at the desk took his payment and after the transaction was made she informed him the pool was closed from 4 o'clock until 12 the the following day. This was very disappointing as one of the main reasons he booked it was to make use of the facilties. At this stage it was 3.45 so no pool. We decided to eat in the bar and after waiting about 20 minutes we finally got to order our food, there was only about 4 tables of people in the bar at the time but staff seemed to occupied amongst themselves to remember to take our order. Again the wait on food was long but as the place was empty I could only assume the order was been prepared freshly. My husbands steak and chips where cold, as was my chicken fajitas. Again the staff were to busy among themselves to come back to check if everything was OK so we tried to make the best of it and eat what was warm. I was still hungry after my failed dinner so I ordered a dessert, at this stage I should have known better and just went to bed as my husband was feeling terrible at the experience I was having and wished he booked somewhere else, but I tried to laugh through it and make the best of it. I got my spoon for the dessert at 8.55 however 9.20 came and still nothing to eat with the spoon. Again no one checking back, I finally managed to get the attention of the girl who gave me spoon, she came over and asked was I alright? To which I pointed at my spoon and said I'm still waiting for my dessert. She walked away and finally at 9.35 I was presented with my order. At this stage I didn't want it as the mood had gone. We paid the bill and where informed the reason I was waiting was because the girl that does the desserts was on room service!!? Yet the table that ordered after me got there's. All and all it was very disappointing.

Just back from a two night family break and I have to say the hotel were excellent in their covid safety measures. There was a member of staff cleaning the door as we arrived! Our temperature was checked on arrival which, in my view, benefits everyone. There was hand sanitiser everywhere. All serving staff wore facial masks/coverings. Our cutlery was presented to us in a sealed plastic covering, and the breakfast bowls and fruit were covered in cling film. Honestly I feel there was nothing much more the hotel could do to ensure you felt safe. We even overheard a staff member asking a group of 6 who were having a meeting in the foyer to spread out further, again, for everyones benefit. Our family bedroom was spacious and very clean and the pool facilities were excellent and extremely clean too. Food was very good. Staff were so pleasant. We have 2 your girls and they had a ball. Yes it's a different experience as you have to book the bar for food, book the pool times etc. I would advise you book them in advance of your arrival (well certainly the pool anyway). This is a totally unprecedented/weird time for everyone, so I have to say, from what I could see, the hotel took every step they could to make us feel covid safe.

Okay so on rrival tempwrature check and sanitizer, good start but the rooms AC was not working at all if anything it heated the room up, no toipet roll made 4 calls to reception to get some yet still took over 6 hours we booked the pool as we where told to do to avoid over crowding yet the pool was over crowded we walked out immediately and very disappointed.
Not only was it over crowded people where walking in off the street with no booking and being allowed in we viewed this twice omce on the way in and on the way out.
Hoping the pool was the only place like this we opted for dinner at the hotel as we where already aggitated with the pool.
We where promptly shown to our seats after they where hastily and half assed cleaned, only to be sat with the menu in an extremely over crowded resteraunt for 20 mins as our server had vanished and did not return between this and the severe over crowding of the room we walked out and went to get food elsewhere.
This was absolutely appaling as a hotel i dont want to hear "the pool is the cleanest place in the hotel woth the chlorinated water" it was over crowded people where swimming without caps on and loitering both in and out of the pool this entire hotel was an absolute waste of money they only thing it appeared good for was a room to sleep in.

Dear ryane900, Thank you for taking the time to write your recent review. Upon looking at your bio on your profile, you say you only leave bad reviews. The world is a tough enough place with enough negativity out there at the moment so it think it's always recommended to keep a balance and add some positivity and joy out there too when your experience is good. Regarding your stay, I am sorry we did not meet your many expectations and for the numerous issues you seemed to have encountered. We appreciate we don't always get it right but the vast majority of the time we really do. We have many guests who do enjoy their stay with us and leave clear and constructive feedback as you can see from our previous reviews. We wish you well in your review writing moving forward and hope to see a good one pop up one day. Kind regards, Ciaran Brazil Sales & Marketing Manager

As an essential worker I stayed in the Killeshin Hotel for one night earlier this week.
After a long days work I was glad to check in, and pleasantly surprised at how clean and well signed the hotel was with Covid in mind.. The bedroom was spacious with a working space and everything in the room was spotless and information left in the room regarding covid protocol both for my safety and the safety of the staff. Everything worked that should work and the bed was very comfortable.
I had food in the bar, soup for starter and some nice brown bread. I had the best fish and chip ever.
The fish and chip was so good I felt if I had desert or tea it would spoil it.
So it was off to the room for me then to watch some TV and relax for a while.
Next morning I had a fabulous breakfast served by nice to get me ready for another days work.
After a great nights sleep I checked out next day and would recommend the Killeshin Hotel to anybody looking for a nice Hotel with wonderful food and welcoming staff.

The hotel with its free parking, availability of a fitness suite and pool with a decent meal in the bar made for an enjoyable afternoon and evening for a family of 5. The interconnecting rooms were appreciated and I'm sure are welcome by all 5+ families as they are hard to find. The room was ok for the time I had to spend in it, not a 4 star by any means which I presume the hotel has received due to its extra facilities on site i.e. a pool.
The major issue with the room and presumably all rooms is the lack of air conditioning and noise proofing. I followed other guests recommendations and asked for a room at the back of the hotel to be away from the road traffic noise at the front. Unfortunately the rooms at the back are located beside the outdoor smoking/drinking area of the hotel and what I believe are the extractions fans for the kitchens? Noise was very audible up until around 09:30pm from guests outside however, from 09:30p to 10:30pm extremely loud dance music was played which drowned out the chatter and laughter! The gym closed at 9:30pm which makes me wonder were staff members making use of the facilities after closing time or perhaps cleaning up? Either was the loudness of the music was unacceptable. For the rest of the evening until after midnight the loudness of the extractor fan(s) and temperature in the rooms kept us awake. Opening the window was of course not an option and the radiators were not on!
The breakfast the following day was plentiful and tasty although better coffee options would be nice as the coffee served was terrible.
Would I stay again? Probably not without trying other hotels first as quality of sleep is a priority when on vacation.

When we first arrived we were told that the restaurant was fully booked and so was every other restaurant/bar in the town. I found this ridiculous working in a hotel myself where it is common decency to prioritise guests for tables. We then agreed on ordering room service as we’d no other choice really only for them to forget half of our order and the other half was stone cold. We got up to the room to find a disgusting guest information book that clearly hadn’t been cleaned as it was sticky and still had crumbs from the previous guest! This sicken me as it made me think about what else in the room went uncleaned in the room especially considering we’re in the middle of a pandemic with Covid-19. The bed must’ve been broken as when my partner first sat on it, it sounded like a cat was trapped under it. This meant that any time either of us moved in our sleep we were both quickly woken up. That and the fact we were right over the car park/smoking area meant we got an awful nights sleep. We will definitely not be returning to the hotel as we’re shocked at their standards for guests.

Dear kerrilou14, Thank you for taking the time to review your recent stay with us. We were sorry to hear about the experience you had. I believe you may have spoken with our Duty Manager on the day who apologized that you could not get a reservation at the time. This was our first week of opening with the new restrictions and to be perfectly honest, we did not anticipate being as busy as we were so did not foresee any issues with guaranteeing tables to our residents. As a result of this we are now contacting all residents in advance to give them first preference and avoid disappointment. These are strange times for all of us and we are learning daily on how to manage the hotel with these new restrictions in place and to keep the safety or our guests and team alike a priority. Please rest assured that our rooms are cleaned thoroughly with all the required products. We sanitise all rooms with a fogging machine after each departure so our guests can enter the room knowing the whole space has been sanitised completely. We have done all the appropriate training and have received our accreditation from Failte Ireland in relation to Covid Safety. I am sorry that you will not be returning. As I mentioned it is difficult times and we as a hotel team are working very hard to maintain a safe and welcoming environment. As a fellow hotel worker, I am sure you will have empathy regarding this. Kind regards, Ciaran

Stayed for 2 nights in this hotel in the executive room,
When we arrived at the front desk it was a normal check in but there was no information given about dinner or use of the pool. We then got up to the room to find a very standard room it's was very clean but not what we expected for paying more money for a better room. In the room the remote did not work for the tv we did go down to reception to tell them it was not working and we were told someone would come up with a new one but no one came we then rang down to ask about the pool and was told we needed to go down in our swim clothes using the bath robes in the room one was fine and the other was not washed had a big stain at the back in the bum area like someone had wore it while being unclean and was ripped all down the side of it. I did go to reception with this to show them and was told at the desk that they have been waiting on an order of these and had no replacements that it just had to be worn. It was not worn and I had to walk back up to the room from the pool in wet swim clothes as I had nothing else to put over me as they would not replace the dirty ripped one.
Other than these two the food was great the waiting staff was very polite and friendly and so were the staff in the bar but we will not be returning as the unsanitary bath robe especially in the times where cleanliness needs to be high standards and the fact that no one at the front desk was willing to help or try sort out the problem and just brushed it off and the same situation with the tv remote all issues with reception was just brushed off and they were not helpful.

Response from Daniel McCarthy, General Manager at The Killeshin Hotel
Responded 2 Aug 2021
Dear W2372CKseanf, Thank you for staying with us and providing your feedback. Our executive room is of very good quality and is exactly as advertised on our website. We receive great feedback on these rooms usually therefore I am sure you can understand why I am suprised. We call all of our guests in the days prior to check in to book dinner and pool times, having investigated your issue it does seem we did call you but did not get an answer. With covid regulations we must get times for pool and bar, not something we would like to be doing however we are in this situation now and are doing our very best to cope with this added workload. Our robe cleaning is all outsourced and I can assure you they are cleaned after every use. Again with covid cleaning procedures we guarantee this is being complete daily. I have liaised with my Front Desk Team and no member of the team seems to have dealt with you regarding this issue so I am at a loss as to where this occurred. Thank you for your comments on our food and F&B team, they have been brilliant in the past few weeks and the comments have been very positive. I hope you can return to us in the Killeshin and thank you for your feedback. Kind Regards, Daniel McCarthy, General Manager.

If you are looking for a hotel close to the train station stay in the Midland Park Hotel, I have stayed in both and the Midland gets my vote.
My apologies for the late reply, the hotel is open but for essential workers only and guests are requested to provide their essential worker letter from their employer on arrival.
