We have been travelling around Ireland with my girlfriends family and our last stay before heading to Dublin was at the Plough B&B. To start with, Beatrice who was the host at Plough B&B was calling us couple of days before we were due to arrive to offer us a discounted rate if we cancelled our booking through Booking.com and booked directly with her. That felt suspicious and should have raised initial alarm bells regarding the stay. We refused to book directly with Beatrice and kept our booking via Booking.com. On the day of our arrival Beatrice was trying to take a payment from our card without authorisation and called us about it, even though we were meant to pay for the stay on arrival. She asked us for card details to be shared over the telephone with is so unprofessional. Beatrice specifically asked us what time we will be arriving and we advised we would be arriving between 1 and 2 pm on the day. She was completely fine with that until we arrived… no one was to be found on the property until Beatrice appeared about 5 minutes later all agitated, stating we were meant to be arriving between 1 and 2 pm and she pretentiously asked me what time it was- it was 1:37 pm and she told me she hadn’t managed to hoover the rooms with which I had no issue with as we were meant to be heading for a walk around Dingle anyway. Beatrice also mentioned to us on the phone call two days prior to our arrival that they are organising bout tours to watch dolphins. However, at that stage we had our bout tour long booked with one of other companies who were easily found online and had great reviews. Beatrice said it was one of their competitors. At the start we took it as a joke but later we only found out she wasn’t joking about it and made us feel uncomfortable about the fact that we booked a tour with their competitors and not them by passing an offensive comment. If she really cared about customers, she’d contact us at the time I made the booking on booking.com to offer the attraction rather that making us so uncomfortable after finding out we already made plans and it happens to be with their competitors. Beatrice made us feel very unwelcome and uncomfortable from the moment we walked in. We are travelling as a family of 8 and one of our family members has been bitten by a dog in a past therefore she’s suffering with PTSD when dogs are unleashed. There was a big dog at Beatrice’s property which was running around without a leash so I explained to her the situation and kindly asked to put the dog away. Beatrice then had the decency to be rude enough to reply that it is as if I was asking her to tie her child up and that I should have called ahead of booking my stay to check if she has dogs on the property!!! What kind of host acts like that??? I have travelled around the whole world and I have never ever in my life been made to feel so uncomfortable by the host! It was as if we were a problem to Beatrice even though we paid to stay at her B&B. This woman should not run a tourist accommodation! This has been already after she has taken a payment from us so we had no choice but to bite our tongue and stay there that night. However, it doesn’t end there. When we came back to the accommodation in the evening after our walk there was a smoke all around the building as if something was on fire. This was very disturbing and we couldn’t breathe properly hence we had to open the windows in the rooms as the smoke was so strong it was easily observed in the air inside the building. This is definitely against any worldwide health and safety rules! Beatrice on arrival also showed us where the breakfast next morning would be and showed us facilities in the accommodation to make ourselves tea & coffee and grab some water which was located in a “breakfast room” close to kitchen. The next morning my girlfriend’s mother woke up early and went to make a coffee when faced grumpy Beatrice around. Then my aunt also came out to grab a water first and after she was leaving the room Beatrice slammed the door right after her almost hitting my aunt!!! This should be reported and investigated, this woman is abusive and should not run a B&B. She closed the door and refused us access to facilities she claimed were available to us. At 8:00 am we showed up to have breakfast but even then everything was a problem to her. Anything we asked, she was replying with a dislike on her face and pretentiously opening the windows when we said we were very cold (considering we had to sleep with windows open to be able to breathe properly). She was watching our every move while we were eating which made feel us even more uncomfortable. Another issue is relating to the state of the property. It is below any standard of hygiene. I have found women hair in the bed! It made us feel disgusting. Beatrice clearly doesn’t like having people around and looking at previous reviews of this accommodation this is not the first time she has been like this. For a one night stay I have never had so much issues to complain about but this woman is not fit to be hosting guests and is dangerous. If we were to argue back I don’t know what she would have done. This has caused us an incredible amount of stress and frustration and left me totally embarrassed as an Irish person travelling with my girlfriend foreign family.

Response from Beatrice Flannery, Owner at The Plough Bed & Breakfast
Responded 14 Sept 2023
Hello Julia let me explain to you, as I did on Booking.com and on google and now tripadvisor, you were in touch with booking looking for a compensation. In this case we didn't see it right to offer as in my opinion its your duty to make sure that we the property owners was aware of your family member being afraid of dogs, then we could be prepared for your early arrival, which I went to great length to accommodate, Regarding your payments,I was in touch with you as the credit card you supplies to secure the rooms , didnt go through,? I mansions to you that we offer boat tours and as a guests we can offer a discount rate ,we joked a little on the boat tours nothing more, plenty to go around. You have access to dining room as I explaines but while we are preparing for breakfast we need a few min to brew the coffee,2 staff members in the dining room 1 of which closed the door to continue so we can open at 8am, this is very much a false statement made by your aunt. We are open 30 years and very proud of it, and will continue to run as we provide a service ,and a duty to our Wonderfull little village. Maybe little advice to you do some more researches before booking for your large family as clearly the Plough wasn't your taste,I have nothing more to say ,only thank you for your time it took you to wright this .

I highly recommend a stay at The Plough. It's off the beaten path, but worth the detour. Ventry is a delightful village, with many opportunities to take in the beautiful scenery on foot. Our guestroom was quite large enough for 2 adults to occupy, and the sizable common room provided space to relax and enjoy the view of Ventry Bay. The local pub is a short walk down the hill, as well as a small convenience store to get some snacks or post a letter. We were dependent on public transportation, so we appreciated the local mini-coach that runs back and forth to Dingle regularly (1.5 Euro each way). One of the highlights is the breakfast prepared by host Beatrice. Everything from a full Irish breakfast, to fruit and cereal, gave us a great start to our day. I only wish our stay could have been longer.

We had nothing but problems with out stay, from the booking to our departure. Our booking for three days was confirmed and paid for in advance. On the day of our arrival, we received an email telling us our reservation was cancelled due to a booking error. Eventually, they agreed we could stay one night. The room was tiny-tiny with the only floor space taken up by our luggage so that we had to step over it to get to the bathroom. Bedding and towels were old. The Hostess was angry and hostel toward us in the morning. She demanded we check out early. Our plans for that day were completely disrupted as we had no where to go. We explained this and asked to keep our luggage there for the day. She refused to accommodate us and then told us to leave her establishment. There are much nicer and kinder establishment in the area.

The host and hostess couldn’t have been more helpful. Bed & Breakfast is up the hill from Ventry village overlooking the sea. Lovely view. The creamy porridge is to die for and lots to choose from the menu. Can’t wait to go back next year.

Not sure why this gets such high reviews. At best described as ‘homely’. Old furniture, bedding and towels. Needs refurbishment. Not our thing to stay somewhere like this and really disappointed with how it was. Breakfast was OK but not fantastic. Only 1 pub/restaurant in 1970s style nearby downhill and the food was usual affair. Glad to leave.

We stayed in the Plough B&B in August 2020. We had originally booked to stay for 3 nights however we extended our stay by 2 extra nights as we enjoyed it so much. Lovely house overlooking the beach and Beatrice was a wonderful host. The breakfast each morning was delicious and also catered for gluten free needs. Our double bedroom had everthing we needed and had lovely views of the sea. We also did a fantastic boat tour with the company Sealife Rib Tours owned by Beatrice and her husband. This was the highlight of our stay and a wonderful end to our trip. We will be back. Jennifer & Hugh.

As per previous reviews the room was small, and an extra blanket was needed at night. But we only paid Euro 100, and the view from the front over the bay was magnificent. Quinns pub in Ventry serves great dinners. Our host offered us a choice of breakfast times, and the room was ready for us when we surfaced in the morning. Great value for money B&B. Tip: arrive in daylight as the property is a little to locate, and to get the sunset views

Proprietors helpful but not friendly with us Americans, was more so with English guests. Great view of town and bay. Room is TINY - it was difficult finding places to put all our stuff plus extra silly throw pillows when we went to bed. Also very cold. Bathroom also tiny and poorly supplied - only one bath towel. I do give them credit for good breakfast - porridge, cereal, fruit, juices, water available plus “main” cooked for you.

The Plough had lovely views of the water. Breakfast was good. The bed was just ok. We were immediately disappointed because when asked we had indicated that we would arrive between 2:30 and 3:00 there was no one there and a note on the door said "back at 5." Beatrice acted a bit irritated when we arrived for breakfast promptly at 8am and she wasn't ready. Instead of inviting us in for coffee she sent us to the living room area to wait. My overall assessment is that the place is not very welcoming.
