Murrays' Doonmore Hotel, the most westerly island hotel in Ireland, was built in 1969 and has been owned and managed by the Murray family ever since. We pride ourselves on our hands on approach to customer service so you will be dealing with a member of the family at most stages of your stay. We care about what we do because it is not just a job, it is our life. Our friendly staff are superbly trained and they know that our raison d'etre is to ensure that every customer, from a child ordering a hot chocolate to a group of adults staying for a week, deserves only the best service possible. Our hotel and bar food is famous for its freshly caught seafood and its consistently high quality and value for money. The accommodation is clean, comfortable and warm. The atmosphere is welcoming, homely and relaxed. It is no accident that we have a large percentage of repeat business stretching back to the early days. The proof of the pudding is in the eating (and we bake all our own!) So come out and visit and experience Murrays' Doonmore Hotel for yourselves. Andrew Murray

In a world where style is often valued above substance, Murray's Doonmore Hotel is all substance - which is their style!
We return twice each year, and it always feels like walking in the front door of home. Murray's hospitality is genuine; there's no slick falseness here, nor is there any intrusion into one's space, just a reassuring presence, on hand and available to answer any query, fulfill any need. One feels very much like a guest in the Murray family home, rather than in an hotel, and every encounter with each one of the great team at Murrays', is one of warmth and friendship. Many simple kindnesses are shown, making one feel truly welcome and at home.
The bed in our room (we often have the same dog-friendly Room 21, as we bring our little dog with us) is huge, and so, so comfortable, with lovely pillows, and crisp linen. The housekeeping staff are so attentive, and accommodating, ensuring our every comfort was provided.
The food at Murray's is always excellent. Murray's breakfasts are well known and most highly regarded; many people staying elsewhere on the island have been known to breakfast at Murrays! Top tip: order poached eggs; they're perfect every time!
One single menu serves the bar, sunporch, and restaurant, with plenty of choices to suit all tastes. Outstanding seafood is a speciality. At the time of our most recent visit, a new Head Chef was, as they say: "knocking it out of the park" and we had stunning dinners all week. The bar is the home of some of the best traditional music sessions you're ever likely to hear, with outstanding Bofin musicians to the fore, along with visting musicians from the mainland, and abroad.
In summary, Murray's is a family establishment, and if you're sound and respectful of the fact that you're sharing their beloved homeplace for the duration of your stay, you may get to feel like a member of the family. Above all else, that's what keeps us returning.
Thank-you Andrew, Donna, Aileen, and all the wonderful Doonmore crew!

We stayed again assured of a warm, homely welcome and staff that pay attention and are always more than happy to help. The hotel is spotless and even the older rooms have a very specific attraction. The atmosphere is lovely and friendly. The food is very, very good (though I miss the old brown bread.) I recommend the Featherblade of Beef is you are a meat eater. This really is one of the best places I have ever stayed and return to again and again. Assured of the high standards. The values are old fashioned hospitality, warmth, kindness and lighthearted crosswords in the very cosy bar. Lovely music some nights with “the Four Alaskan Songwriters” there for two of the nights we stayed. I cannot say enough good about the Doonmore. Even on a wet day,of which there were none on this trip as it happens, the cosy layout and atmosphere reassures as well as the magic of the constantly changing seascape. A true find and so very well run by Andrew and Donna. Getting from the boat to the hotel see less.

We have just enjoyed another lovely week in The Doonmore, yearly treat. Its setting overlooking the Atlantic is idyllic. The rooms have been recently revamped and are decorated in the most restful colours. The food is excellent especially the open crab with the freshest of salads. The staff, are efficient and friendly which creates a lovely atmosphere. Being family run means there is excellent hands on management from Andrew, Donna and Aileen which is reflected everywhere.

The staff at Doonmore were just fantastic. Friendly and helpful. Being picked up off the ferry and Andrew explaining the landscape was a great start. I spotted maps of the island at reception (which we got copies of) showing the walking tours and that was like gold dust. Donna welcomed us all and we were in the room unpacking in no time.
Our bedroom was very comfortable and warm. Love the blackout curtains. Great water pressure too. I suggest large dispensers for shower gel and soap to save on plastic and those fiddly wee bottles.
Breakfast is good quality ingredients with a great choice considering you are on an island. A big thank you to Ciarain who explained how to get to Cromwells Barracks. That made our day. Chowder was perfectly made, great ham n cheese toastie too and fish & chips fresh. Bar area is cozy and inviting and waiting staff were very efficient and friendly. We will be back for longer! Well done to you all in Murray’s.

Fantastic stay at Doonmore Hotel. Donna, Andrew & all the staff were extremely helpful from once we made the booking up until our boat departed. Beautiful breakfast. Our room for 3 adults was very spacious and comfortable, we loved the addition of the toiletries & face cloths and had a brilliant nights sleep.
We cannot wait to return.

Great time spent at Doonmore Hotel. The location of this hotel is amazing- within 20mins walk ofa beautiful sandy beach where we swam before breakfast each morning. The service at this hotel is outstanding. Nothing was too much trouble- provided us with butter and jam for the scones we got from an honesty box so we could picnic on Inis Shark. Any variation from the breakfast menu can be ordered and service was friendly with plenty of chat and fun. Our room at the back of the hotel was newly renovated , tastefully decorated and very quiet. Thank you Andrew and Megan for a great few days.

I didn’t expect the Doonmore to be as wonderful after Covid. It has surpassed all my expectations. The staff are ever obliging with courtesy and a smile. The menu is excellent though I miss the old recipe brown bread and a couple of items from the old menu. The bar, Geranium conservatory and the dining room each hold a very unique atmosphere and ease. Please don’t change! The newly done up bedrooms in the annexe are really comfortable and always spotless. A very unique and old fashioned charm here that is priceless.

This is not the first time we have stayed at Murray’s Doonmore Hotel. Staff are friendly and accommodating. We were fortunate to be staying in one of the beautifully refurbished dog friendly rooms this time. The decor gave an earthy, relaxed feel, reflecting the vibe of the island. A comfy dog bed and bowls in the room was a lovely touch. In addition to being allowed in the dog friendly rooms, dogs are also allowed to join you in the conservatory area when you are eating.
We had our evening meal at the hotel, with a fabulous seafood starter and a lovely roast lamb for main. Breakfast the following morning can only be described as 5 star - a great selection and we thoroughly enjoyed our full Irish breakfast.
The outside seating area is perfect for a relaxing drink with fabulous views.
We have stayed here before and would highly recommend. Inishbofin is a very special island and Murray’s is the perfect place to stay.

There’s a warm welcome at the pier where your luggage is collected and a lift to the hotel awaits. I prefer to walk the short distance even though it was raining. The islands magic had started to work even as the rain soaked through my clothes. The bar is cosy and friendly. While the rain soaked the ground outside there was a crossword to complete/share. The chowder was warm and filling. The bedroom had everything I needed with a good sized bathroom. Dinner was a special treat of sea trout in a cockle, mussel and leek broth served with samphire and new potatoes. The sea air left room for another special: crème brûlée with rhubarb. A concert later did not affect the quiet of the sleeping areas.

It’s always a treat to visit Inishbofin but staying in the Doonmore makes it perfect. Staff are friendly and efficient. The atmosphere is evidence that other guests are enjoying themselves too.

And I am not happy to score this place as such because other than a terrible night sleep everything was perfect. We were given a room located near 2 lounges, close to the guests bathrooms and near their restaurant. There was an awful lot of traffic of people coming and going, we could hear people having drinks in the lounge, we could everything coming from the bedrooms at either side of ours as the walls were so thin..We did not sleep.. These rooms should not be sold at the same price as other rooms for that reason, they should not be sold at all. We were late booking it but that is not an excuse. These rooms are number 9 to 12.

A part from that, I have to say they really are on the ball in terms of Covid precautions and everything is organized for you to feel so safe from the reservation stage with details on how check in and check out will be done, storing luggage etc They are also so well organized with the luggage situation as they come and collect you or your luggage only, at the ferry terminal and that is brilliant as no time is wasted when you are on the clock on the island. Same on check out, you can just leave you luggage at the hotel and they will they bring it to you at the ferry and that was priceless so we could fully enjoy our morning before heading back on the boat.

Dinner and breakfast were good and simple and again organized in a very impressive safe way with EVERYBODY wearing a mask. The place has a lot of character and we had a chat with the owner (Andrew?) who told us about the history of the hotel and that was great; lovely that they managed to keep that authentic charm and back in 1969 the place was probably very similar. They are located in a very beautiful spot and at reasonable walking distance to a beautiful beach if you wish to enjoy it like we did before heading back on the boat in the morning.

The room was of good size, no bad surprise; it was basic but comfortable and very clean and pretty much like we expected based on their website.

I would definitely recommend this hotel and the day we stay there again I will remember to request a room that is not located on the ground floor and as far as possible from the lounges, restaurant etc Great team there and you can tell they are all happy to be working in such a place.

Response from Andrew Murray, General Manager at Murray's Doonmore Hotel, Bar & Restaurant
Responded 28 Aug 2020
Dear Fraochoo, The title of your review is very misleading. However, I note with delight that you are so very positive about everything else; the way we have organised our business re. covid precautions and that you recognised our staff are excellent and felt safe right the way through your short stay with us. We have placed the utmost importance on the safety and comfort of our guests and adhere strictly to the regulations while at the same time, our fantastic staff work extremely hard to ensure everyone feels welcome, comfortable, and safe. Our food has received outstanding comments all this season, a lot more than ‘good and simple’ to be fair! Back to the misleading title: Firstly I am terribly sorry that you didn’t sleep well. The vast majority of our guests regularly comment on what a great sleep they have here, several this season already asking where we bought our mattresses as they are so comfortable! Just for the benefit of other readers: There is no residents bar, again due to our strict adherence to covid guidelines, and all guests are asked to vacate the public areas by 11pm. I realise a lot of guests bring their own alcohol which is something we cannot control but we are very strict regarding what, when and how we sell alcohol to guests, sticking rigidly to the regulations, even more strictly than the regulations in fact. If there are some hotel guests that have been out for dinner elsewhere and return a little later because they have to walk home, we unfortunately cannot police their sound levels as they walk to their room, that is the same in every hotel in the world, but not that common here thankfully, as the vast majority of our guests choose to dine here. I say your title is misleading as there are no other rooms in the whole hotel even close to a lounge so to claim it is “a very noisy place” is totally incorrect, extremely misleading and portrays a very unfair impression of our very well managed hotel, based on a one night first time visit. I can assure you the walls in the room you stayed in are solid block walls, with the exception of the wall at the head of the bed which is in fact a two and a half foot thick rendered stone wall! I do not for a minute doubt your claim that you heard some noise from the lounges, and I am sorry for that. However, your review is potentially off putting, and you are not really in a position to make an assessment about the sleep quality of guests in the other rooms as you did not stay in them, let alone to suggest that we shouldn’t even sell these rooms! As our staff finish earlier these days, there isn’t always someone on the floor much after 11:30pm but there was a telephone in your room with which you can call a member of onsite management 24/7. Unfortunately, you didn’t do this, so we were completely unaware that you had an issue. As stated previously, we cannot police people 24/7 and there is an element of personal responsibility on both your and their side to be considerate of others, to make other guests aware if they are being noisy (at any time of the day) and to resolve any issue around noise yourselves. If anyone is uncomfortable doing that then it is imperative that you make a member of staff aware of the problem. This is all just by way of explaining the situation for you and people reading your review. I really do appreciate your honesty and that you found everything else about our business so exceptionally good. I look forward to your return visit when you will see that the negative element of your first experience is not at all typical and that 99.99 % of people who stay with us have a thoroughly enjoyable time, and a great night’s sleep.

There is a large open field and a beach directly in front of the hotel, and a choice of walks on quiet roads /paths on both sides of hotel, which should keep the children entertained. Enjoy!
