Dining unfolds across 7 rooms, with menus using seasonal produce from the garden, farm, and local producers to create a 5-course culinary journey ending with the famous Dessert Trolley. Established in 1964 by Myrtle and Ivan Allen, Ballymaloe House's farm-to-table philosophy and commitment to sustainability remain core values.

This is a difficult review to write as we are unsure how to rate it.

We both found the dinner and breakfast just wonderful - full of flavour, lovely choices, attention to detail and just great service. Friday night buffet starter is just such an superb idea and, of course, the sweet trolley - different choices and you can try anything. Breakfast - real orange juice, gorgeous scones, fresh smoked mackerel, a lovely full Irish. I could go on and on about the food here.

The staff are really friendly, helpful and attentive.

The house is set in beautiful countryside and looked fabulous for Christmas. The bed was lovely and comfortable, the room decor pleasant and the bathroom was of a high standard with lovely fluffy towels.

So all the above is worthy of a five score.

We're just not sure if the bedroom itself is value for money. There are none of the facilities that you get in other 4 star hotels e.g. television, coffee/tea making facilities. Whilst you could ring and get coffee and tea at any time - sometimes it's just nice to make your own and drink it in bed whilst relaxing in the morning. Some of the furniture also looked a little worn and battered. So, it is this and just this bit alone, that has bought it down from 5 to 4.

We would go and eat there again any time - absolutely fabulous. We won't stay there again - we just didn't get the luxury feeling.

Ballymaloe is the prefect getaway to spoil yourself and relax. The service is top notch without being overwhelming. The staff seem to be there when you need them and leave you alone otherwise. Everything they do seems to be oriented to making the guests feel like home. And everyone is so friendly and wanting to please in the right way.

The house itself is a magnificent estate house and the rooms remain true in character but modern in convenience. I LOVE the fact that there are no TVs in the room (at least the rooms where we have stayed). The linens and toiletries are what you would expect from an establishment of this caliber. The common rooms are all beautiful and the house is filled with magnificent artwork. My favorite room happens to be the parlor to the left off the entrance with a large fireplace that seems to be forever lit. The sofas and chairs in that room are all so comfortable and it's a perfect spot to relax with a drink by the fire before and/or after dinner.

They serve tea and cake in the late afternoon and it is very much a treat. The breakfasts are incredible including a cold buffet and a lovely assortment of hot prepared dishes from a full Irish breakfast to crepes to grilled smoked mackerel. Again, the service is exemplary.

Do yourself a favor and stay at Ballymaloe House. You won't be disappointed.

Dear sirtravel, I am delighted you enjoyed your relaxing getaway with us here in Ballymaloe. The fire in our drawing room is lit pretty much all year round, except for a few days in the summer if we get hot weather, which makes it a nice cosy space. We very much look forward to seeing you again.

Excellent country house hotel experience. We had the Grey Room - one of the best, with great views - and we enjoyed a lot of the things to do - swimming, tennis, sustainability walk/talk, walks in the grounds. We ate at the restaurant twice in the evening - 4 course and 5 course menus. The breakfasts were splendid - lots of local, farm-to-fork food. The Ordinary Punter and Mrs OP loved this hotel, it was just what we wanted to kick off our Irish holiday

But please appreciate that this may not be everyone's cup of teas (literally). it is a country house hotel experience, not a modern hotel - there's no tea/coffee making facilities in the room, there's no TV and some of the decor etc has a certain faded charm. There's an open air swimming pool (not a spa) and the tennis court has "rustic charm" (i.e. it's pretty crappy, but fun, with sweet peas going up the side netting). if you want a modern hotel, go somewhere else

Dear ordinarypunter2015, I am so glad you enjoyed your stay with us. You are correct that we are not a modern hotel. We are a country house, the oldest part being our castle which dates from the 1400's. We do not have TV's in rooms but so many of our guests really appreciate the peace & quiet of the countryside & we are always happy to send a tray of freshly brewed tea or coffee with cakes & biscuits to any of our sitting rooms or to bedrooms. I hope that you enjoyed the rest of your visit to Ireland & we hope to see you back here again someday.

High expectations of Ballymaloe based on reputation. Sadly not met during our 2 night family stay. Beautiful setting and hopes were high as we pulled into the car park but very quickly dashed by the rude and offhand English receptionist who left us all quite bewildered by her attitude and completely ruined our initial impressions.
Never experienced a ‘welcome’ like it.
Rooms are nicely furnished and spacious but no tea/coffee making facilities or even a welcoming piece of shortbread (unlike everywhere else we stayed in Ireland).
Whole impression is of a penny pinching profit driven enterprise.
A coffee ordered via room service attracted a 7 euros ‘tray charge’. Disgrace at these prices.
Pre-dinner drinks on terrace pleasant enough but no nibbles on offer and cocktails underwhelming.
Dinner a real let down given the history and reputation of the place. Bland, boring food and the fabled dessert trolley distinctly lacking proper puddings.
Overall very disappointed.

Beautiful, authentic, old Irish hospitality and charm.
Visited with my father for his 84th birthday and it was perfect.
We had tea and cake on arrival and were assigned two sumptuous rooms.
On a frosty evening in February both rooms were toasty and beautifully presented.

As visitors from England this was a visit to which we were hugely looking forward, but came away a little disappointed. It was very good, but far from perfect. Firstly we were left much to our own devices on arrival. We found our own way into a very pleasant conservatory area but had to ask to see the menus. Having reconfirmed our booking in the previous week, I had asked for as accessible table as possible due to my own poor mobility, but this request seemed to have been ignored, as the table we were given could not have been a longer walk.
Now to the food. The starters were fine. No complaints there. For main course I had the chicken, served with a mountain of beans and mange tout. Totally out of balance. There was insufficient tarragon sauce. But, the most disappointing thing were the potatoes. I have never seen more uninteresting ones and the taste was similarly boring. Basically baked potatoes in their jackets, cut in half and stacked in a dish for the four of us. Two hakes were ok, but the beef ragout looked a dark, sticky mess. After sitting with finished plates for at least 15 minutes I had to ask for them to be removed. I got a slightly snippy response that our table was next.
The legendary sweet trolley did look beautiful garlanded with cornflowers but there was nothing remotely innovative on it. Ice cream, chocolate sauce, strawberry parfait, mini meringues, small tarts filled with crème anglais, fruit compote. Nowt special.
And so we waved goodbye to Ballymaloe. We can say we’ve been. The house is beautiful, but the lack of meet and greet staff, a quite average meal and poor service probably means we won’t make that trek again.

Following the successful showing of Ballymaloe House on Master Chef some months ago, I decided to take my family for Sunday lunch there on the 17 July.

Whilst the surroundings and service was first class, the food was disappointing.

Two of my family had a lemon and ricotta starter, that was small and lacked flavour.

I enjoyed a very fine pate with excellent breads. Another son had a tasty broth.

But it was the main courses, that were really disappointing. Two of us ordered the Hake and we were served two miniscule tail end portions which really should not have been put up in an establishment of its reputation. Whilst the carrots and potatoes were very tasty, they could not make up for the disappointment of the Hake.
The desserts were equally unimpressive and it seemed as if they were attemping to maximize profits with minimal effort. The sweet trolley comprised a good raspberry and basil jelly, freshley picked cherries, small lemon tarts topped with blackberries, chocolate meringues and vanilla ice cream with chocolate sauce. There were no cheese cakes, gateaux, creme brulee, creme caramel, steam puddings, crumbles or other classic desserts.
I would be hesitant to recommend this place as a special venue for food.It would appear that Ballymaloe has lost its focus and that this once Michelin star restaurant now relies more on its burgeoning reputation.

Thank you for taking the time to review us. I am delighted that you found the service & surroundings to be first class. Sorry that you thought the Ricotta was lacking flavour & the Hake was small. We do offer second helpings, so I do apologise if this did not happen. Our menu & sweet trolley reflects the seasons, so Rasperries & local Cherries were very much in season. We do hope that you will return another time.

We stayed one night in Ballymaloe House on our way home from Inchydoney Island and we were sorry we did. Not sorry we only stayed one night, sorry we stayed at all. We were given a room they called the Roof Room, it should be called the attic as that is what it was.

As you can see from the photo attached, the view was of a slate roof and the sky and that was it. For a country house in beautiful countryside, it is unbelievable that they think this room is suitable accommodation at €295 per night. The room is hardly accessible, my husband is 6’ 2” so had to stoop to get through the door. The ‘wardrobe’ is in the eaves so suffice to say, heads were smacked a couple of times reaching for clothes.

When we went down to the conservatory, we mentioned at Reception that we were very unhappy with the room. We were met with surprise and told that some people love this room, apparently it’s got the biggest bathroom in the House. It probably has, but that is more to do with bad design, whereby the shower would have been better placed under the apex and not in a space which would better serve as a closet. Anyway, I don’t know anyone who would book a hotel room based on the size of the bathroom!

While we were in the conservatory, a staff member approached us and offered us another room once they had ‘jigged it around a bit’. We decided not to move as we had unpacked some things and had also touched various surfaces. I think it was actually worse that they offered us a move. Not that they offered one, but that they had given us such a poor room in the first instance whilst there were others available and not allocated to us at the outset. As we had our afternoon tea, we noticed other guests arrive after us, so it's not like it was the last room available. To add insult to injury, as we left the dining room after a superb meal, and passed Reception to go up the several flights of stairs to our room, the Receptionist quipped ‘bet you’re happy you didn’t swap rooms now’. We could have done without the sarkiness.

Bottom line, have dinner here - it’s fab - but don’t bother staying.

Incidentally, there is a poem on the wall in the room about how some people can see the magic of the room as all they can see is sky, whilst others merely focus on the negativity of only seeing the slate roof. How about that for a bit of gas lighting?

Loved Ballymaloe, as we always do. We were there for my daughters confirmation. We had the rooms in the Allen flat. We had the double room and the kids had the larger room, they were joined by a hallway so you could lock the door out on the corridor and safely keep the bedroom doors open so they kids could come in and out. The food was so good and we loved the breakfast. Staff were very helpful

A night away for my mother in laws 60th. On check in our room was ready. Everyone wore masks correctly. Pity some staff were still wearing visors when the WHO and Irish government have said they’re not as effective as masks.

The food was delicious, from the light lunch, dinner and breakfast. Some portions are small, such as the glass of juice at breakfast or cheese board at dinner but you can ask for more and at dinner we were asked numerous times if we wanted anything else. I think it’s a great way to reduce waste.

The rooms in the old house are comfortable, old fashioned, clean and have every you need for a lovely night. We’d a new modern bathroom with separate shower and bath and we loved the voya Irish products. No TV in the rooms.

I’ve taken a star off for the surly breakfast waitress who banged everything down on the table and the non existent wifi and mobile reception in the panelled room. While reception can’t be helped leaving a room in 2020 without WiFi and mobile reception is unacceptable.

If you don't want to rent a car, some of the Bus Eireann route 240 buses stop at Ballymaloe House. See Bus Éireann Route 240, Cork - Cloyne - Ballycotton (tried to post a link to the timetable, but the Trip Advisor website doesn't allow it)
