The Lord Bagenal Inn offers a range of amenities that are often commended by guests, including its comfortable rooms, delectable cuisine, and warm service, although the bathrooms have room for enhancement. Set in a location celebrated for its proximity to quaint towns and picturesque landscapes, the hotel's ambiance is a blend of creative decor and a lively dining scene, despite some noise complaints. While the service and cleanliness receive mixed feedback, with instances of unprofessional conduct and areas needing more thorough cleaning, the primary concern among travelers is the value for money post-Covid, with several deeming it overpriced.

One night stay here as we had been at a wedding nearby. We rang to let the hotel know, it would possibly be near midnight when we would be arriving. We had checked in online. It was midnight when we arrived, only to be welcomed by a very pleasant and helpful young man (night porter I think). This man deserves credit as most people at this hour of the night are not very friendly, so well done. I’m sorry I didn’t get his name. Our bedroom was big and spacious with a single bed and a king size bed. Very comfortable bed and hotel nice and quiet for sleeping, bottled water provided. My one crib is the bathroom, this is a 4 star hotel, bathroom looking very tired with your shower over the bath, not good enough for prices being charged. Breakfast the following morning was good with freshly cooked menu available which is not always the way.

My husband and I went here for a one night getaway. We previously stayed here maybe about 18 months previously and it was a great experience from start to finish.

When we arrived we were given an hotel room in the old part of the hotel which wasn’t great, the room looked dark and the decor looked tired. The gentleman in reception said they were full but I really wanted to change and he let us change rooms to the newer part of the hotel. The room was bright, spacious and we had a lovely view of the river Barrow.

We had dinner as part of our package but just be aware it’s only €30 credit per person. The food was delicious and they have a very extensive wine selection. Really enjoyed the meal.

Next morning we went down for breakfast and were greeted by two lovely ladies they were so welcoming. The waterfront restaurant has changed its decor and furniture but I prefer the old way. My only criticism is I felt some parts of the hot breakfast had been sitting out or reheated which wasn’t enjoyable.

Enjoyed the pastries to finish off and the coffee was excellent.

The Lord Bagenal has all the qualities of a top hotel, but none of the boring/depressing aspects of a 'generic international brand'.
It seems to be the unique creation of an inspired and purposeful proprietor. Its walls are hung with his own art collection, and guests can enjoy the magnificent displays of flowers - most hotels would not bother to go to these lengths.
This large and spacious hotel may be entered through the small traditional bar on the main street, which then gives one the impression of entering a 'Tardis', or from the main entrance behind.
Our room was twice the size that one might have anticipated, and met every expectation. Breakfast was marvellous, and the large dining/bar was full of atmosphere.
The setting in Leighlinbridge is picturesque and full of character, as are its people.
The staff were very friendly, engaging and apparently highly-motivated.
We were delighted by our choice of hotel and can thoroughly recommend it to anyone looking for quality, character and a gracious reception, in a lovely location.

This place fell extremely short in basic Customer Service , booked for two nights ( Thursday and Friday ) 344 Euro for 1 person !! Totally overpriced but I needed to be in the area. Checked in online around 6pm , arrived 8.00pm/8.30pm, no valid reason for the online check in as the Receptionist on Duty had to leave the desk to check if the room was ready and process my payment all when I arrived. Why would a room not be ready at 8pm when check in time was from 4pm !The baths in the rooms are a disaster it you are any taller than 4 foot !! The rooms are dated and are in need of a revamp. Its been a long time from there was ant sort of deep clean !! Asked to be moved to a room with a better bath on the Friday morning ....as there were photos of normal baths on various booking sites only to be told by the Receptionist that you cant always rely on photo's but she would speak to her manager. I
had breakfast ( yoghurt was off and the mushrooms were cold ) returned to reception for an update on the room move … was spoken to in the most sarcastic/rude manner and told the bath you saw in the photo is in the bridal suite and obviously the Bride and Groom were staying in there tonight as they had a Wedding . Returned to the Hotel Friday evening around 9pm .. Wedding in full swing in the lobby and surrounding areas...got to my room and realised that I might as well be at the Wedding the noise from the Wedding Band was horrendous... at 12.30am no sleep up to this point rang down to reception to check what time the music finished ... was told 1.30am ... I asked why I had been allocated a room in such close proximity to the wedding function room only to be answered >> how did we know you weren't with the wedding party>> pardon - simple question on check in I would have thought !"! The music did not stop until 2.15am >>> I had an extremely busy day on the Saturday and a long drive home on the Saturday evening with 3.5 hours rest/sleep for 175.00 euro.. extremely upset and very tried at this point. Asked the Receptionist on Duty when leaving for the Manager's name or email address .. took two attempts for her to give me his name and then said "you'll not get a reply he's on holiday ... why was I not surprised !!
** The ladies who served breakfast were extremely nice **

On the positive side, this is any easy hotel to get to - a few miles off the motorway from Dublin with free parking. That is important when you are getting used to driving in Ireland.

The food and beverage service was excellent. High quality food with great bar and table service. I hosted three family members for an evening meal in the restaurant. The food and service were outstanding. I had the included breakfast the next morning in their Waterfront restaurant. Well prepared, fresh and plentiful served by a gracious and welcoming team.

That said, this was the worst overnight hotel experience I have had in Ireland. After I checked in to my room - there was a flyer on the table indicating "Please beware that there may be excessive noise due to functions in-house. We apologize for any inconvenience".

What they should have said is we probably shouldn't have rented your room to anyone. You will endure over six hours of pounding loud music and there will be intoxicated people on the ground level deck outside your room howling and screaming until 2AM. Alas, you've already paid. Too bad for you. The "warning" should have been on the website when we booked the room.

Finally, while most of the public places in the Inn were quaint, in a good way, clean and well decorated, the sleeping rooms and the corridors outside them are in grave need of deep cleaning and/or remodeling (paint, furniture, carpets, etc. are well worn and older than dinosaurs.

Lord Bagenal,Leighlinstown is perfect setting for walking a section of the River Barrow Way. 5km from Lord Bagenal Hotel to Bagnelstown along by lovely meandering river with old trees, stone walls, flowered banks, outdoor swimming pool, weirs and locks. 6km walk to Milford in other direction walking by the river through farm land filled with horses.Coffee in Milford woods and return. Staff in all areas -bar, breakfast, dining, reception very welcoming & generous to share their local knowledge. Hotel set on banks of river Barrow in Leighlinstown village with seating areas looking out over water. Leighlinstown is a pretty small village with pubs & nice public seating areas to sit, read or paint. Signage in village gives very good overview of history of area. We visited hotel mid week and price for three person room with B&B was very reasonable. Vegetarian dinner was under 20 euros. Art work throughout hotel beautiful. Nice curati g. Hotel has lots of areas inside & outside just to sit & read or chat with friends after a days walking.

Located on the banks of river Barrow this hotel seems to be very popular with the locals and tourists alike. During the 7 nights we spent we noticed their vast car park almost full during lunch and dinner times on many occasions. They had three functions during our stay. Special thanks to Laura who checked us in, found a better room and gave us some interesting tips for local sightseeing. Dining room staff were very friendly and helpful. However, very disappointed at the lack of vegetarian/vegan options. Although the reception staff mentioned they will accommodate our requirements when it came to ordering we had to take the only option available on the menu. I must say it was tastefully prepared. Breakfast was good and all staff in the dining room were very helpful and friendly. The room and bathroom were of reasonable size. Tea and coffee making facilities and daily supply of two bottles of water were very welcome. There was no fridge in the room. There were sufficient plug points to charge your gadgets. The internet connection was reasonable although on occasions we found the drop in speed caused some inconvenience. The shower was good. Although it is easy to get in and out of the bath tub, it would be nice if they had fitted a suitable grab rail as I found the tub can be rather slippery especially after your shower. One full sized window with double doors but only one could be opened. While I understand the difficulties faced by the hospitality industry in general ever since the start of the pandemic, I cannot accept any compromise on cleanliness. The whole hotel requires a thorough deep clean. I found insects in the pelmet, cobwebs in many places etc. All windows, including the ones in the restaurants, gives the impression that no cleaning was done for several weeks! I have pointed out this to the young and friendly lady who checked us out. Not much of an activity in the tiny village next to the hotel. We did enjoy our daily walks along the river banks.

This is, as far as I know, the only hotel in Leighlinbridge. Others are in nearby towns or villages. If I ever return, I will check those out, as I don't want to stay at the Lord Bagenal again. The town is small and sweet, I would love to walk along the river from Carlow to Leighlinbridge or some other point, as the trail goes for over a hundred miles.

I stayed at the Lord Baganal Inn for two nights, taken in by the nice photos and reviews I saw online from 5,000 miles away. It's a weird place, obviously added onto at different times. My room was a basic American motel room. Several "wings" of the hotel require going up and down stairs after taking the elevator/lift to your floor. When I discovered that mine was one of these, I returned to the desk to request a room on the same level as the lift, and got one. The whole hotel smelled unpleasantly of fried fish one of the afternoons. It is a bit cavernous in the entry. My view was of various rooftops of the hotel. Very nice big bathroom with large tub.

The food: I didn't try the 'carvery" since I tend towards the more vegetarian foods. Ordered "Caesar's salad" once -- big mistake. Here, as elsewhere in Ireland (so I'm told by friends back home who laughed) consists of a largish bowl of chopped iceberg lettuce mixed with mayonnaise. I had asked for the salad with chicken - there were pieces of fried chicken nuggets around the edge of the bowl. I ate the chicken, only the first bite of the "Caesar's salad." Dinner was edible but not great. The breakfast here is better than lunch or dinner. If I had had more time and knew about other eating and lodging places in town, I'd have gone there. I was on a "family history"pilgrimage," limited time. I should have done more research, but this seemed like the only game in town. Since many reviews here are very positive, one can only conclude that people's experience and expectations vary considerably. I don't go for the posh multi-star hotels, I usually like just a modest, clean and comfortable place.

The *staff* here are very nice and friendly and helpful.

The Lord Bagnal Inn was far above what we’d expected for a two night stay during a 5 day canoeing trip for 5 women.
The rooms were large, spotlessly clean, luxuriously appointed. The hotel has many comfortable seating areas, interesting artwork, appealing decor. Breakfast was delicious, and varied; Karen and Kay looked after us so well; as did the staff in the bar/restaurant in the evenings for our really tasty evening meals. Leighlinbridge was a delight to explore.
We will definitely go back again. Well done to all involved in such a great experience.

My parents have asked if I would write a review on their behalf . Eamonn and Margaret were attending my cousins wedding on the 14th of July . On Arrival they were promptly looked after at checked in . Each member of your team was very helpful and pleasant throughout their stay ,in particular your waiting staff . The Wedding party had a delightful day also . The decor and cleanliness are to a really high Standard, the attention to detail with flowers creates a personal touch .Overall they would highly recommend this hotel for a wedding or a short stay in Ireland . 5 Stars all the way . Thank you for looking after them . Catherine Geoghegan
