I stayed here almost 7 years ago now and loved it then and I'm sure it's only better now! I thoroughly enjoyed the spanish instructions and loved the regional excursions in the combi. Masaya volcano, pineapple fields, national parks, the lagoon!, and granada to name a few. Great place to meet travelers that become long-term friends. Highly recommend this enriching... More

I made the decision to spend 3 months solo in Nicaragua, knowing very little of the language and even less about the country. Luckily, a friend suggested I begin my trip at La Mariposa. I experienced this place in several different capacities (pure guest, home stay, and volunteer) and at different times throughout my stay and it will be the... More

I stayed at La Mariposa last summer, both in a home stay and at the hotel for a few weeks. La Mariposa provides an experience of Nicaragua unlike any other. I was travelling alone to Central America but couldn’t have felt more welcomed by my homestay family and Paulette and the staff despite not speaking a word of Spanish when... More

I had a great time. The food is included and they also have Spanish classes. My family and I learned a lot. They take you on different adventures at night and the community is really great. It is a amazing place to start your vacation because you are able to see all different places and pick where you want to... More

This was my second time at La Mariposa (well, third if you count that during this one-month trip, I stayed at La Mariposa for two separate weeks). And, it continues to please. The work they do in the community is amazing and is reason enoufh to support them. But, the one-on-one Spanish classes are helpful for improving one's Spanish and... More

I spent a month as a 23 year old student and volunteer at La Mariposa, and then I came back and brought my mother for a week. Each of my trips were incredible, all due to the amazing staff and community at the school. My classes were private lessons and individualized to my wants, and my homestay took me in... More

I was extremely apprehensive about traveling on my own for the first time to a foreign country where I didn't speak much of the language. The wonderful people at La Mariposa couldn't have made it easier! During my time at La Mariposa I spent about 2 1/2 weeks in a homestay and volunteering. My homestay family was super nice and... When I started my search for my first Spanish immersion experience, I’ll admit that I was a little suspicious of the overwhelmingly positive reviews La Mariposa had garnered. After reading through the first few pages however, I was intrigued by the comments people left. I pored over the website, where I found the “Please do not come to us if... More

Hey Benji....I had no idea you were so nervous...you covered it well! I think you are the only person ever to think the "Please Do Not Come here If" page on the website is charming.......it is certainly extremely useful in helping people decide if we are right for them or not! I hope you come back, we enjoyed your company! More

My husband and I with our three children (ages 9,7,4) went to La Mariposa for a week. We had an unforgettable experience! First off -- the pictures do not do it any justice. Even the video makes the place seem kind of dry and dirty. It has a lush tropical feel. We were there near the end of dry season,... More

A lovely review, thank you. I particularly appreciate the gratitude for Kat and Chester who do indeed go the extra mile......Sorry about the English movies, we have talked to the teachers and suggested they do not do this unless it is OK with the parents. Official Description (provided by the hotel)
La Mariposa is a small, friendly non-profit Spanish school and eco-hotel, just outside the small town of La Concepcion, Nicaragua. Only an hour from Nicaragua's major attractions - Granada, the Pacific Coast, the Laguna de Apoyo, Masaya volcano - and 45 minutes from Managua airport, La Mariposa is surrounded by organic coffee, banana trees and flower gardens. Our cool, green climate (we are 500 meters above sea level - makes a real difference to the temperature) is ideal for studying Spanish! Our conservation efforts - though small scale - have vastly increased our bird population, butterflies and even frogs! We offer intensive Spanish classes in our purpose built classrooms or in outdoor classrooms in our delightful grounds, full of tropical plants and rescued animals. Classes are mostly one on one (max 2 or 3 in a class) and we cater for all levels form beginner to advanced, including specially designed classes for children. We have an extensive library with Spanish study materials and a selection of books in English on Nicaraguan history, development issues etc. We organize a full week (that includes weekends) of activities, including cooking and salsa classes, classes on the history of Nicaragua and a weekly update of what is happening in the Nicaraguan news. These are delivered in Spanish to help with progress in Spanish and with English translation if necessary. On 3 afternoons and Saturdays we offer trips out to local places of interest as well as the Masaya volcano by night, the Masaya markets and artesanias, Granada, Leon, the Laguna de Apoyo, the Pacific beach, Managua, Catarina, the Pueblos Blancos and more! The trips are rotated on a monthly schedule. There are various accomodation options - Students can stay in the eco-hotel (ensuite rooms) or our eco rooms (cheaper). There is a also a large (en suite) family room. Situated about 5 mins from the main school/hotel is our nature reserve. There are now 2 cabins in the reserve, each with two bedrooms, seating area, shower and compostable latrine, private terrace and garden, small kitchen (though you can of course eat all meals at the main hotel) - these are ideal for families with kids who like a bit more space to run around! There are of course a few friendly rescued dogs to keep the kids happy!! We use solar power - for heated water in all of the showers as well as to provide electricity, conserve rainwater, have a number of recycling schemes and have started our own successful organic farm which provides some of the eggs, veggies, coffee consumed at the Mariposa. And much more. We use our income to maximise the employment of local people (currently employing 80 teachers, maintenance and kitchen staff) and undertake a number of projects in the local community. You can opt to volunteer at one of our community or environmental projects, living in a homestay with a local family. Amongst other projects, we are currently offering volunteer placements in the nature reserve, in local schools, with a day care project or with disabled children. You are also welcome to help out the Mariposa workers - whether feeding our rescued animals or cooking up our healthy meals. All of which is a great way to improve that Spanish! We have also recently opened, on another but close by site, a study centre specifically designed to cater for groups of students. We offer an individualized curriculum which can include Spanish classes, activities and classes on the history, culture and environment of Nicaragua. We can also arrange community service work for groups. Accommodation is in two eco built dormitories, each of which has 10 beds (bunk style). The eating/meeting hall is a lovely structure built of straw bales and thatched roofing. Classrooms face a terrace with great views of the Masaya volcano. Meals are always freshly cooked, often using organic veggies from our farm. And of course there are solar heated showers and solar powered electricity. ... more   less
