We had an amazing time at Tankavaara in December 2023. Firstly the area in winter is absolutely stunning. Secondly the staff were fantastic in the bar area and guides and driver. Shout out to both Kimmos!
We chose to stay in the Sompiotalo Deluxe apartment which was a 10 minute (very enjoyable) walk from the reception. It is a great apartment. In terms of activities we did the northern lights snowmobile tour with Tankavaara (Kimmo 2) which was AMAZING. We also did the Lappish Dinner meal in the traditional Kota and indoor winter gold panning with Kimmo 2. The good museum is also surprisingly really good. We booked husky and reindeer safaris ourselves from Tankavaara recommendations. Absolutely fantastic time.

I had visited the place before, this year I spent 3 nights in a cabin of the Gold village (before and after a multiday hike in the area). The cabins are cozy and all gold digger style and just beautiful. Toilet, shower and kitchen are in a separate common building. Depending on which cabin you get, that building will be more or less close. Cabins have nice wooden bunk beds, bed linen, a table, chairs, a fireplace/chimney, chopped wood some shelves.
Check-in is in the nearby restaurant, which is also a cozy place with good food and very friendly staff.
There are several old buildings and some tiny shops in the Gold Village, you also have the possibility to learn gold panning. The international gold museum is also within walking distance.
There's just no supermarkt in the area (the closest grocery store is in Vuotso).
Free wifi works close to the reception/restaurant only, not in the cabins etc.

The place is lovely, in a reconstructed gold village with a gold museum, in the National park of Tankavaara. The rooms, apart from wooden cottages in the wood, are in two ugly buildings that indeed disagree with the general idea. My room was small and very basic, beds very uncomfortable, kind of soft sofas with a very thin mattress; the bathroom new and comfortable. Breakfast is quite poor. Lunch and dinner are average. The nicest one was the fire dinner in a small hut with Sami music and a very nice girl of the staff. The activities are well organized. I did snowshoeing in the park with the same nice girl and reindeer sledding by night (no aurora unluckily). The staff is kind and helpful. Wi-Fi works very well also in rooms.

We stayed at the Tankavaara gold village camps cabins in a four person cabin. The cabin was nice in itself. But on the last night of our stay I woke up to a mouse scratching my arm. Very unpleasant. We decided to leave the cabin in the middle of the night and continue driving southwards towards Rovaniemi. Would not recommend this place.

We were lucky enough to have spent 5 nights at Tankavaara Gold Village - stayed in a hut called "UPA". Small, yet comfortable with a fireplace. Very romantic.

The owners and all staff members were amazing - friendly and extremely helpful.

The food - superb! We got to try local dishes... followed by several shots of Vodka...

Got to spend Christmas eve at Tankavaara as well. An amazing, down-to-earth experience with the locals. Good entertainment and fantastic food.
Fantastic viewing of the Northern Lights as well - about 30km from the nearest town Saariselka, so a good, dark place and great visibility.

An overall, great experience. We will return. Very soon!

If you go to the Finnish Lapland and would like to try to pan then this is the ideal place. They have five or six cottages there, you cannot beat the feeling (and all the mosquito) but you will have fun. They have camping places too.

The experience of living in #wilderness is just #unforgetable. Away from any distraction, city pressures, technology, noise and other stress. It was really relaxing, calming and mind blowing new ambiance for both of us. Everyone is just so friendly and helpful specially @munttu and the lady who went with us for #snowshoeing, always prepares our breakfast and made me a "sunny side up eggs" 🤣 Also special thanks to Marco for some complimentary blueberry vodka shots last Christmas eve.
Thank you for such a magical white #finnish #Christmas experience in #lapland. @goldvillagelapland
We hope to see you again soon 😍

Tankavaara Gold Village (Tankavaaran Kultakylä) is situated in the village of Tankavaara, the municipality of Sodankylä, about 30 kilometers to the south of Saariselkä tourist center. They have the extremely interesting Gold Prospector Museum (see separate reviews), the very nice Restaurant and Cafeteria Wanha Waskoolimies (Old Gold Prospector) and accommodation.

There are many different accommodation possibilities in Tankavaara Gold Village. They have a camping site (caravan and tent places), cottages and Gasthaus Hotel Korundi.

Gold Prospector's cottages seem to be quite nice, at least in pictures. Unfortunately we booked a Korundi room (room number K4) instead of a cottage. We had extremely lot of space, a fireplace and an own kitchen and the room was very quiet. However, our bathroom was awful. It was small, worn and very moldy. The shower was the strangest one I have ever seen. A bidet faucet was used as a full body shower, too. I had to reach the faucet of the wash-basin to change water temperature and pressure during showering. The whole bathroom is in the need of urgent renovation.

The information folder of the room said that the breakfast is served in the restaurant between 9-11 AM. We ate the quite modest breakfast and after that we were informed that it wasn't included in the room price. We had to pay ten euros per person. Taking into account the lack of breakfast and the moldy bathroom, the Korundi room was quite overpriced.

So I can't recommend Korundi rooms but I highly recommend all other activities in Tankavaara Gold Village. The museum was marvelous and the interior of the restaurant was extremely interesting. The service was always very polite and kind.

But the best part of Tankavaara were their nice hiking routes to Urho Kekkonen National Park (see separate reviews). Even short nature trails are very interesting, e.g. Urpiainen Trail (1 kilometer), Koppelo Trail (3 kilometers), Kuukkeli Trail (6 kilometers, also a nice observation tower) and the geological trail (Geologinen polku, 7 kilometers). Remember to climb on Fell Jorpulipää (the offshoot of the geological trail), too. The view from there is amazing. I will remember it forever.

My uhsband and I stumbled upon this great place by complete accident during our three week ex tempore driving trip around Finland. We live in Helsinki but wanted to get away from it all and explore lapland a bit more. We passed the sign for "gold village" as we were driving on to the next big town and the intention really was just to have a look round the place and then continue our journey, but the place and the people there proved too fascinating and in the end we stayed for two nights and three days. The gold village itself and the organised gold panning was brilliant and great fun. Really well laid out and professionally put together displays. The mineral and gemstone exhibition was particularly interesting and well done. But the thing that made it special for us was meeting Kasper the resident geologist, Jouko and his dog and the two brothers who own the place. They really couldn't have done more to make us welcome. For instance on our first night there we were invited after the museum closed to go and sit around the campfire with them in the reconstructed Alaskan gold mining village to chat, drink homemade cider and grill sausages! Kasper is a literal "mine" of information and we were so struck by gold fever that we paid the extra €40 and spent the whole of the next day digging and panning for gold on a professional claim nearby. Kasper took us to the place and gave us thorough instructions on what to do and how to do it safely and then we were left alone for the whole day to dig to our hearts content! We really got a feel for what it's like to be a gold miner and now have a newfound respect for anyone who does that for a living...really hard work but the experience is well worth the €40 paid. We even found our very own bit of lapland gold (and a few nice garnets) to bring home as a souvenier and I can thoroughly recommend paying the extra for an experience you wont ever forget! All in all this place is amazing, even if you have no interest in geology whatsoever. Kids would love it and I think, as in our case, it would bring out the big kid in anyone.
