I recommend the Rutledge house. It is a romantic getaway perfectly located in the historic district with countless things to do and see. The services and staff cannot be beat! The rooms were amazing. The fireplace was great and the furniture was true to the time period.

The fact that the "proprietor" of this business continues to deny the remarks made by his patrons on this website goes to show the tactlessness of the treatment at this inn. I have explicit recollections of booking two nights. In fact, we were unable to stay at prior inns we contacted because of their lack of availability for two nights....

We sincerely apologize again, as we did in the review titled “They packed our bags and kicked us out.” It is unfortunate that the remedy we chose to rectify the difficult situation we were in impacted you so negatively. For that, we sincerely apologize. Sincerely, Richard Widman, Proprietor

I have visited Charleston on 4 previous occasions but my first time at John Rutledge House Inn. The visit was by far my best stay in Charleston, thanks to John Rutledge House Inn. The service was exceptional. Everyone was kind and courteous and went beyond the call of duty. The breakfast was included and delicious. In addition, afternoon tea added...

We most definitely made a two night booking. At noon the day after arriving we were called and told that we had to check out because our stay was booked for a single night. They also couldn't book us for another room because their "system was down". We were at the plantations near Charleston and went back to sort things...

When you called to make your reservation, our rooms were completely sold-out on the second night. Upon your arrival, you signed a registration card acknowledging that your reservation was for only one night. After repeated calls to your cell phone, after your scheduled check-out time, we had no other choice than to remove your bags to prepare the room for...

Overall this B&B is very nice. We went to Charleston for the Christmas week and wanted to take our dog with us and this was 1 of only a handful of B&B's or Hotels that could accommodate. The rooms was in the Carriage house, 8 rooms in total, and worked very well although the carpet either should be removed or...

It was our 45th. We could not have stayed in a more accommodating & comfortable location. The grand suite was definitely "grand" with 2 rooms, each with fireplace. Enjoyed the champagne as a gift & the complimentary sherry & brandy. Loved the breakfast choices, both quality of food & option of served in room or in ballroom at our chosen...

Our first trip to Charleston was greatly enhanced by our stay at the John Rutledge House. It's location was ideal for walking and truly experiencing the city. The staff was extremely helpful suggesting attractions and dining, and the complimentary breakfast, afternoon tea and evening brandy were unexpected benefits. We had a room on the lower level, near the kitchen, which...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
America's Most Historic Inn. John Rutledge, one of the fifty-five signers of the U.S. Constitution, built his home in 1763. Now exquisitely restored, it is one of only fifteen homes belonging to those signers to survive - and the only one to now accommodate overnight hotel guests. History records that George Washington called here in 1791. An entry in his diary shows a breakfast with Mrs. Rutledge. A loving rejuvenation has restored the beautiful details of the home's 18th and 19th century architecture: the elaborately carved Italian marble fireplaces, the original plaster moldings, the inlaid floors and the graceful ironwork. The John Rutledge House Inn offers nineteen guest rooms within a complex of three buildings. One may choose between the elegance of rooms and spacious suites in the original grand residence or the charm and seclusion of rooms in the inn's two carriage houses. Antiques and historically accurate reproductions give each room its own warmth and distinction. John Rutledge House Inn is proud to be a founding hotel in Historic Hotels of America, as well as Select Registry - Distinguished Inns of America and Classic Inns of the South. Guests may leave cars parked on-site for their entire stay because the best of this beautiful port city is just beyond the doors of the John Rutledge House Inn. The city's finest restaurants, theaters, shops, and the Old City Market are all in short walking distance. The gorgeous residential area "South of Broad" begins directly opposite the Inn. A stay in this elegant antebellum bed and breakfast offers the opportunity to experience history as well as the warm hospitality for which the South is justly famous. ... more   less
