My husband and I love our little getaways and always choose a special bed and breakfast or inn for these excursions. The service is usually impeccable, the rooms are ultra-clean and the breakfasts are to die for. Such was definitely not the case when we visited the Lancaster area and booked a room at The Cameron Estate Inn. Before we even arrived, three emails and one phone message inquiring about their restaurant menu were left unanswered. Upon check-in, we received so much less than a warm welcome. Although cordial, the gal took less than a minute to tell us our room was #24, the key was in the room and breakfast was between 8 AM and 9 AM. The lack of an escort to our room was surprising. In all of our prior experiences at inns such as this, the host would show us to our room, discuss the amenities and services offered and make us feel “at home”. I could understand if many guests were checking in, but in our case, we were the only ones staying for the night. At least we found our room to be clean, if in need of a bit of updating. The linoleum in the bathroom was exactly the same as what I had in my first house, back in 1978! There was also a narrow strip of wood along a section of the carpet in the middle of the room. Not sure if there was a tear in that area. Maybe they wanted to cover it up. There was an ice bucket in the room, but no glasses. The website stated the bathroom was stocked with amenities. Not true. The tiny Dial soaps and ultra small bottles of shampoo and conditioner were thrown together in a small basket, almost as an after thought. There also were no tissues. When it was time to go for dinner, we discovered they left the wrong key. We had the key for room #11, not #24, so we could not lock our door. When we went down to the front desk area to swap the keys, we found the person had left for the day. A sign was displayed with a number to call if there were any concerns, but after leaving a message, no one ever got back to us! We ended up getting the tissues, glasses and the correct room key from a nice kitchen worker the following morning. Even at 9:30, the front desk remained unattended. Breakfast was another disappointment and not as advertised. There were no menu options as stated on their website. Coffee, juice and a few muffins (which looked like they were purchased at the nearest Giant Food Store) were on the counter. We were just fixing our coffee when a young girl came out of the kitchen area. She told us we would be having eggs, bacon, French toast and hash browns. No choices, not even how we wanted our eggs! We no sooner made our way to a table when out of the kitchen came the waitress with our plates! Obviously, the breakfasts were pre-made and just kept warm. The scrambled eggs were bland, the French toast was dry, the bacon was greasy and the hash browns were frozen patties that just weren’t worth eating. To make matters worse, we were served the same breakfast the following morning! What happened to “options that change daily” and “best breakfasts in Lancaster County”, as stated on the website? (I have to mention the service we received in the restaurant for breakfast was fine.) The Cameron website shows how popular they are as a wedding venue. There are rave reviews from The Knot displayed all around. Maybe they devote all their energy and resources to that end of the business. They certainly don’t seem to care about their inn clientele. I had the feeling they were having financial difficulties and doing the best they could to get by. I felt sad that a prominent mansion with wonderful grounds and such history couldn’t present itself in a better light. Their website certainly fooled me-don’t let it fool you.…
