LUNGTA (2 people) The Lungta Cooperative cabin is situated on top of rolling hills with a view of the Sangke Grassland. Lungta Cooperative are partnered with Norden. I highly recommend Lungta Cooperative. We paid for an additional fold-out bed and extra meal for a third person so the price averaged out at 2200 RMB per night. This includes 3 meals a day. The views are spectacular! I cannot pass comment on Norden as I have had no experience with them except for the brilliant café & WeChat support. All I know is that Norden don’t like the rain even when it’s not raining; as they canceled the 2600 RMB grassland picnic, 12 minutes after scheduled pick-up. Norden was disappointing but refunded as we were out and about. There was no rain. The weather was lovely, such a pity as we had been so looking forward to this experience ❤️ For this reason, I would recommend Lungta Cooperative only. Still going to give 5 stars as the Lungta Cooperative is breathtakingly beautiful, the views spectacular and the night sky awe-inspiring.

Norden is a wonderful experience for those looking for luxury in a beautiful Tibetan setting. The many floor to ceiling windows really showcase the outdoor beauty of the surrounding hills and grass. We stayed in the 2 bedroom family tent which was stylishly designed with Norhala yak wool on the sofas and beds. There were nice details like rose tea to help with altitude sickness and water heating bag in the beds to keep warm at night. The Tibetan ladies came around to warm up the room before bedtime and in the morning before waking up. The temperature difference meant that evenings in early May were chilly, so the fireplaces were really helpful, though they were a bit smokey for the first hour. One should bring their own speakers, toiletries, etc. Meals were delicious. Chef Andy from Seattle prepares local organic food creatively, like yak tenderloin, lamb meatballs and yak cheeseburgers with homemade tomato sauce. Breakfast consisted of local yogurt, breads, boiled eggs, frittata and local porridge. We especially liked the calzone like pizzas with local ricotta and vegetables for lunch. All meals ended with desert, like apple pie or chocolate cake. The bar had unique barley wine cocktails. In terms of activities, the four hour black tent Tibetan dinner experience in the middle of the hills while watching the farmers milk yak was quite fun, though pricey. Labrong monastery is a must. We also enjoyed riding horses on the road near the property and throwing rocks in the river behind the hotel. There was a nice hike by the hotel up the small mountain, and I’m sure they could suggest more hikes in the area. The bathrooms at the hotel are unique. The kids really enjoyed shoveling dirt into the toilet hole after use. Note that showers are in another building. One of us did experience altitude sickness, which went away with Advil throughout the day. Next time we come, we might drive from Lanzhou (4 hours) so that we ascend gradually. The xiahe airport to hotel was 1 hour anyway, and flights only depart from chengdu / xian at 7am, so one needs to spend the night before in one of those cities. The hotel is managed by Miguel, who previously worked at several Aman properties. Chef Andy also worked at the Aman in Bhutan. The property tries to emulate the unique Aman experience. Norden is truly a gem in domestic China experience.

We were a group of friends who heard about his place and decided to give it a try. We were 5 people in total. We reserved the 2 bedroom cabin and 2 bedroom tent. The accommodations were fantastic. The service and the team there were outstanding. The food and the excursions were also outstanding. We had a great experience despite Mother Nature reeking havoc with the biggest downpour they’ve seen in many many years. Many of the paths were washed out. We didn’t stress and made it all work. They team at Norden still made certain. That despite the the bad weather they still created an exquisite experience at the hot tub with champagne and canapés as well as a dinner that was 5 star at is best. Big call out for Louisa who remained calm and see to our needs despite the challenging weather. They absolutely do need to work on their transportation-service. They need to help their guests plan better. The driver was an hour late picking us up. And leaving we were told it would take 4 hours to get to the airport when in fact it took more than 6 hours. For anyone planning to go, it’s a 6+ hour journey from Lanzhou to the camp. Plan on it!!!

Stayed at Norden Camp for a few days - we had a family tent (2 of us and a young child); beautifully decorated with the Company's sister company Norlha Textiles' yak hair -based materials. The team is headed by Yidam - his staff are really welcoming and helpful & make sure that everyone's specific needs are catered to - think 5* hotel at 3,000 metre altitude! They will come and heat up your room early in the morning. The food is absolutely delicious, very varied menus. The atmosphere is very relaxed, and activities are easily organised: hikes, archery, visits to Labrang monastery (17th century buddhist centre, 3,000 monks live there; worth spending time there!), visits to local farms (yaks galore!), etc, sauna....Bondfires are lit at night which is amazing, in the middle of the mountains. Views are breathtaking. Also there's a keen effort towards sustainability and preserving the environment, so showers are in a separate bathhouse which is easily accessible & lovely. I can't recommend staying there enough, and hope to do so again soon. It really was a unique experience.
