I stayed at many hostels before and this is definitely the cleanest, friendliest and nicest hostel I ever stayed at. The breakfast, the daily events and the café were wonderful. The staff is very nice and helpful. I met lots of amazing people there.
I don’t know how anyone can stay here and not give this place 5 stars. It’s clean, fun, centrally located, the staff is helpful and they even have complementary breakfast (just a bagel but it’s good). Their cafe is awesome and their gravy biscuits are delicious. I will always stay here whenever I am in Portland.
It was great experience! Friendly people, good community, and also good location! And the cafe have really good food:) I love that! I want to give more love to Portland because of this hostel! Thank you for owner too :) And the hostel’s event, it’s really fun and nice! You should join hostel’s event if you go there! If I go to Portland, I will stay here for sure! Thank you for everything:)
Forget the Hyatt I much rather stay at the Northwest Portland Hostel, I like to call it the little village! This place is amazing with such a great atmosphere, great food, cheap drinks and the staff are 100% the nicest and most friendly and helpful group that I've ever been met or been around. And don't let the word hostel throw you off cause they do have private rooms... Best 2 weeks I've ever spent in any place!!!!!!

I stayed in one of the new construction, very large private rooms w/private bath. For $139/night you can't beat the price, and the location is stellar. However, it was clear the room had not been cleaned, even to pre-pandemic standards. There were hairs on the sheets, crumbs all over the chair, and it was quite dusty. I reported it to the front desk gal who was very apologetic, gave me new sheets and commented that there had been an issue with the previous guest which she thought might have been the reason. But notably, she did not offer to have the room cleaned. Cleanliness is the only thing I truly care about in a hotel, but I say I would give it a second chance because other friends have had good experiences there. Maybe it actually was an anomaly.
this place has trash piled up in the guest kitchen, literally!! piled up!! hostel guests are running around asking each other if they know where the trashbags are so that they can take the trash out themselves. fruit flies abound in the disgusting kitchen which you can barely stomach using with piled up trash right next to the stove and refrigerator. and the dorm bathrooms? same thing. trash piled up for days, smelling up the entire hallway. this place was a lot cleaner when i stayed here last year. i won't be coming back again unless i am DESPERATE. i cannot understand why they don't clean this place during a "pandemic" especially.
Since the past two years, I have stayed a number of HI Hostels in the USA (Boston, Chicago, San Diego Downtown, San Francisco Downtown, Seattle's International/ Chinatown District, and Southeast Portland, and of course Northwest Portland). This was the best 4-night stay ever in Northwest Portland over the extended Labor Day weekend. That hostel was (indeed) located at 479 NW 18th Avenue at Glisan Street. During the last two days of my stay, I even made myself Oatmeal Pancakes for breakfast, and that helped me lower my cholesterol. Right after that, I watched a movie entitled "Free Guy" starring Ryan Reynolds at a major movie theater in Southeast Portland. And before I left the hostel, I ate myself a quick breakfast on-the-go, and later, I've checked out of that hostel, and then head for Salt Lake City, Utah. It was (indeed) a terrific four-night stay at the Northwest Portland Hostel.…
I have stayed in a number of HI Hostels in the USA(Holollu, Boston, Chiago, San Diego, DC, Seatle, etc.) and this is the best one by far far. I stayed here for 5 nights in mid-July of 2021 in Room 5. The address associated with this location by Tripadvisor is wrong. Its official address is 479 NW 18th Ave..I am guessing the owner of this or the other took over the other at least several years ago. The hostel is located virtually at the intersection of NW 18th Ave and Glisan St.. The hostel is in a very nice neighborhood with lots of trees arounds. It is very safe at nice. There is a convenience store nearby that has drinks and snacks. If you walk out the reception area onto NW 18th Ave you turn left and go 10-20 feet and cross Glisan St. at the intersection and then turn right. Keep going until you reach the next intersection. Turn right at the corner(do not cross the street) and the door for the convenience is about 20 feet around the corner from the intersection. The convencience sstore is on NW 19th Ave. It is about 50 yards between NW 18th Ave and NW 19th Ave. The convenience like I said will have various drinks and snacks but nothing else. There is a supermarket about 1/3 mile away called Fred Meyer at 100 20th Ave Place. This place is huge. More like a warehouse. You will find everything here. Roughly go two blocks to the right out of the reception door to Everett and turn right. You go about 1,000 feet(not sure how many blocks) and then turn left and the store door(should say one of them) will be there as you walk by. The place is so large it has doors on several dies of it. Fast food restarunts are located on Burnside St.. Turn right from the reception door and go about 5 blocks until you come to a very wide both way traffic. It is a very busy street and you can not mistake it. Anyway there is a McDonalds about 100 feet on your right. You do not cross Burnside. There are others here. The Amtrak train station is almost a mile away. When you exit the sation you go straight down the street, not right. Go down the street and turn right at the first intersection that is about 80 yards away from the station entrance. Afgter you turn right go to the next intersection(about 70 yads) and turn right. Then turn left at the next intersection. You keep going straight in this general direction to reach the hostel. You will have to make a few minor adjustments to finally reach the hostel and Siri or Google Map can help with the rest. A rarety for a hostel is that it has a cafe right next to the recption area. It provides breakfast to hostel guest consisting of a gagel(plain/cinnom-raisin) with creame cheese/peanute butter/jam along with either coffee/orange juice. they serve breakfast from 7?-1100 in the morning. They also serve other meals and not just breakfast. This place is not a meat and potato place. I had carrot/ginzo soup and caesar salad one night and sniztel another night. They do not serve Coke or Pepsi drinks hbe ere but instead locally made soft drinks. I like their giner beer. The cafe may not be for budget oriented people. My giner beer cost $4 a bottle for example. This place has lots of places you can sit at and meet other people. They have area they call the Secret Garden. Hence, it can be socially active when there are a number of people. The room I was in had 3 double beds. There were lockers in the room for each bed. The lockers were big enough for sure a medium size pack and probably a large backpack. You can use your own lock which I had one. The hostel I think can provide you one but not sure if yu have to buy it or not. At least a deposit if not buying. The room was spacious enough with a very large area in the middle of the room since hte bunk beds were alongside the walls. My bunk had its own reading light and several plugs for electricity. The room had A/C in it though did not really need it. There are communal bathroom as well as private bathrooms around the hostels. Looked like people primarily use the private bathrooms. The kitchen has the full set. Sinks, oven tops, refrigs, etc.. along with the cooking stuff. It is a good setup. The staff at the hostel was very helpful as well as the cafe staff. They helped a great deal. A taxi fare from the airport was $40 and a Uber fare from the train station was like nothing or $5 or something. Forgot to mention there is Wifi at the hostel and it was good from my room. They will provide you a password to access it. The bathrooms have soap dispensers at the sinks and in the shower..…
I stayed at a 4-bed female dorm for 3 nights. I had the room to myself the first two nights. It was very easy to take the MAX line from the airport and then walk 10-min to the hostel. Rooms and bathrooms were clean. The cafe was great, and had vegan options. The last day when I checked out, they let me put my bag in a locker because I had a red eye flight and didn't want to carry my bag around all day. They gave me a day pass so when I came back in the evening to get my bag, I was able to take a shower before going to the airport.
