This is just about the only option for lodging if you want to see the Painted Hill late in the afternoon/sunset. An old hotel with small rooms and even smaller bathrooms, but a great lodging experience in a ghost town. You don't get that every day. Friendly inn keeper and clean small rooms.

We were interested in hiking around the John Day Fossil Beds but did not want to spend a lot of time driving to the trailheads. The Oregon Hotel in Mitchell was reasonably close to both the Painted Hills and Blue Basin. The hotel is basic, no frills, clean and comfortable - reminded us of English B&B's in the 1980's. We... I felt like we'd gone back in time. Cowboys wandering the hallways would not have surprised me. Great atmosphere and very good location (we were checking out the Painted Hills). We arrived after sunset so wasn't too impressed when we drove into "Mitchell's business loop" and the first thing we saw was boarded up building. 2 seconds pass that building... More

Clean hotel and friendly staff. Big muffins and decent coffee included for breakfast. No shower in our room, just a tub. But it was the perfect location for visiting the painted hills. There was also a playground across the street which was great for our son!

The Painted Hills are one of the "7 Wonders of Oregon" and a wonderful and unique geological feature. They are well worth an overnight trip. The Oregon Hotel is the absolutely perfect place to stay for your visit. The Painted Hills are far enough from anywhere that you need to stay overnight nearby to really appreciate them. They are best... More

If you are just looking for bed and bath-not for you! If you are looking for a memorable, pleasant experience in a quasi-old west setting, go out of your way to stay here. Clean, comfortable, homey atmosphere with friendly greetings everywhere. Had breakfast --our own ingredients on the front porch--good hot coffee and muffins provided by Skeeter. $59--are you kidding!

Very friendly staff, clean rooms, with a great country feel. A great place to relax and get away from all of the hustle and bustle of a city. Right in the middle of the painted hills, in an old fashioned country town. It's like you stepped back in history 150 years. Well worth the stay.

* Excellent central location to the John Day National Monuments * Town is extremely small - a lot of businesses are closed down/for sale; townsfolk were very friendly. * Sidewalk Cafe had excellent food, service and prices. * They are also only gas station in the area outside of Prineville. * Stayed in a double queen room with a shared... The hotel was charming, the staff so friendly. I think our favorite part was visiting with the other travelers in the front room and on the spacious front porch. The town residents were willing to share local history and take the time to chat with me as I explored the main street. I will recommend this to other friends and... More

Everyone was very friendly and the hotel and rooms were very clean. Well worth the money. We were worried about a previous review which said it was noisy, yes, its an older place (Floors were a little creaky) but it definitely was quiet after 11 pm.
