Since we are not golfers, the main attraction was the proximity of the beach. It was quite a walk - but doable. The weather didn't play along, driving rain didn't make walking a pleasure. We arrived early and got a room in the annex - very quiet there. The room was wonderful - obviously not like other McMenamin hotels we have stayed at: a TV, and your own bathroom. The bed was comfortable. A book about the hotel showed all the rooms and the meaning of the paintings. Due to the pandemic we could only eat or drink outside under the porch of the main building- they had blankets for us, and placed two propane heaters close to us; service was efficient, friendly and very prompt.
We stayed in their new annex building. Clean & comfortable room. They do a great job at McMenamins. Staff was friendly and even with the stormy weather there was plenty to do. We found the secret room which is amazing!
Although the room was quaint, HVAC needs serious attention: collection of dust very noticeable on walls opposite exhaust and intake was caked in dust as was drapes and lamps. Understandable food service is curtailed to eating in room only, but clam chowder and mac and cheese would have tasted better coming from a can and the blue box. We came for the historic presence. Old photos were on the walls but we were informed we could not linger to read the photos due to covid restrictions. No local info in the room. Because the beach is not visible from the hotel, we were not aware of the public beach within walking distance until we checked out. I understand this facility caters to the golf consumers, however, broadening staff energies and enthusiasm for those consumers interested in local history would do well to serve the corporation and the community.…
The second time we stayed in this hotel, we realized the extent to which this hotel is struggling. We are in the midst of a pandemic. Even given that circumstance, we were disappointed to have to wait 20 minutes to get checked in, since it was dinner time for the host. Finally the manager came and apologized. Eating dinner on your bed is not fun; the dining room was full and scary, no masks while eating. We will not stay here again.
My daughter and I finished up a week long vacation up the Oregon coast, starting in Newport and ending in Astoria for dinner. Our last night's overnight stay was at McMenamins Gearhart Hotel. I have the "Passport" and was determined to get some stamps to complete the Oregon Coast experience. I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised at how wonderful the Gearhart hotel was.. And it's no doubt that the letters G R E A T are in the name. It will help one to remember how GREAT the experience was. A lovely smaller property across from the beach and on a golf course. Golfing experience not necessary.. They even have a little putting green next to the Sand Bar pub out on the edge of the golf course where kids and family can put a "round". Start to finish we were treated well. Excellent staff managed by the most affable, Calen Jones, a young and promising star in McMenamins management sky. He does a great job and it shows as the whole staff works like a well oiled clock attending to their guests needs. The room was lovely with cozy wooden paneled walls and a partial view out on the golf course. Breakfast of Eggs Benie was a bonus and came with the breakfast package. We even were treated to complimentary bikes while there and my daughter and I enjoyed riding around the property and down to the little town and through the picturesque coastal neighborhood. Great value, great place, great time.. Thanks Gearhart hotel staff for making our last night at the coast memorable in the most delightful way..…
