Absolutely stunning venue.

The staff are professional, polite and couldn't be more helpful

The room we had was as good a room as ever stayed in

The Spa was THE best we've been to, and, we've been to a few

And then there is the food, well what can i say, ate in all 3 restaurants and couldn't fault anything, just fantastic, especially The Pass which is up there with the best I've been to.

Thank you South Lodge, we will see you soon

Having decided last minute to book a night away at a good quality hotel and spa we found South Lodge and following some time reading reviews we booked a room for the following night, along with dinner.
Upon arrival we were impressed with the parking availability, and the grandeur of the hotel building. When entering the reception area there was a temperature check station and as well as hand sanitizing station. Staff had masks on. This all made us feel comfortable that the hotel were taking the safety of staff and guests seriously.
Check in was quick and easy.
Our room was in the original part of the building which meant creaky floors and drafty windows which I suppose is all part of the experience! The main light in the shower area wasn't working, a handyman was prompt in replacing the bulb following a call to reception. There was a fair amount of noise from the corridor as the doors where quite thin.
We had dinner in the restaurant in the spa area. The food was good but the set up was strange. Due to covid the numbers were restricted, however all guests were wedged in one half of the restaurant rather than being spaced out which would have surely been a better way to manage the situation. We were so close to other guests it was hard to have our own conversation. Whilst half the restaurant was completely empty!
Breakfast the next day was excellent, luckily we had just finished before the fire alarms went off and we all had to evacuate the building for 10 minutes or so. Others weren't quite so lucky!
Check out was prompt, and we spend the rest of the afternoon in the Spa. Each area had restricted numbers which was left to guests to comply. Whilst we were there all guests respected the numbers. It took quite a while for us to get a slot in the outdoor pool as others were quick to get in as soon as other guests departed. The spa area was spotless, the changing rooms were super clean and love the leather sofa's and tv!
All in all, it was a lovely break and we would stay again, although possibly in the newer part of the hotel next time!

Had a really lovely Friday night away last weekend. We had a lovely greeting when we walked into the hotel and had to sanitise and have our temperature checked. The lady at reception gave us a very warm welcome and explained procedures of the hotel and she proactively used an anti-bac wipe when taking our credit card.
The hotel was aware that it was our wedding anniversary and really kindly upgraded our room to one with a view of the grounds called Devils Dyke and has left a hand written card and little jar of loose tea for us to enjoy. Only problem was there wasn’t any tea pot and strainer to make a cup. But it was a beautiful room and view and couldn’t fault it.
We went to use the spa and didn’t have to book to visit and also the steam room /‘d saunas etc were all open. The spa was beautiful and relaxing my only criticism was that we didn’t received such a warm welcome and the reception staff and just given wrist bands and sent on our way so we had to figure out where to go ourselves.
We had dinner in the main restaurant which was lovely. The servers were really lovely and attentive. Again my only criticism would be that our main courses and additional sides weren’t very warm when they came out so sent back the sides to be reheated which meant as we were waiting for them our mains got even cooler. But we were offered complimentary tea/coffee for the inconvenience. They also brought us a plate with little chocolate on with happy anniversary written on it in chocolate which was a really thoughtful touch.
We enjoyed a delicious breakfast in room the following morning at no additional charge and when ordering, were encouraged not to be shy about what or how much we ordered which I thought was a really nice touch so we weren’t embarrassed when ordering 3 drinks each...
Overall a really lovely stay and lovely staff and will definitely be returning in the future.

An extremely disappointing stay.
We had to leave earlier due too them continuously getting things wrong with bad service on top of it. The food is mediocre at best, and way over priced for what they serve. Kept getting orders wrong, the cleaners don’t clean the rooms properly we had to call three times for our room to be cleaned, in the end they had to send a female because the male clearly did not have a clue what he was doing. Using a hotel towel to clean the bath! (Shocking)

They are very under staffed and extremely unorganised. Their menu’s are limited especially for breakfast, and it takes such a long time to get your food. No service with a smile either...

The treatments in the spa is dreadful, I would not recommend you have any treatments there. The gel polish peels off and the massage is not professionally done at all. Such a let down!

You barley get a smile from staff as you walk around the hotel grounds and even if we say Good Morning; still nothing just a half smile back. (Unbelievable)

They have wasps flying around everywhere, and I mean everywhere. They fly in your bedroom if you leave the window open and they seem to not be the shy type.

We left feeling so upset as we were really looking forward to this spa break.

You have to go outside of the hotel to get to the spa and it’s about a 4 min walk. When raining, cold or windy not very ideal at all.

Advise would be to keep looking as this Hotel is definitely the one. Not for the price they charge no way. The service and food should be so much better.

I also had an upset tummy whilst there and I think it may have been from the mackerel or the sea bass. I emailed the hotel as I was up all night in horrendous pain. I did not even get a response.

Today we had afternoon tea at South Lodge Hotel. From start to finish the experience was first class. We were quickly shown to a good table and friendly staff dealt with our drink and food orders accurately and quickly, identifying food intolerances and allergies. Everything was explained from how long to brew our teas to the composition of each sandwich and the ingredients used. The sandwiches were fresh, uniform in size and the fillings perfectly complimented the breads used. We were offered, and accepted a second round of sandwiches which were equally well presented and just as tasty. The savouries were tasty and seasoned well and the scones warm, light and full of flavour. With choice of clotted cream, jams and a chive butter for the cheese ones. The selection of cakes were all delicious but the crowning glory (for me) was a caramel coffee tart with a dark chocolate ganache and liquid centre - awesome! .
We weren’t rushed and the staff were very attentive so it made the whole experience so much more enjoyable. This is definitely a place we will revisit.

We have just returned from a 3 night stay at South Lodge. Although we must all be very aware we are booking a stay during very difficult times the hotel & Spa was fantastic. Clear messaging around taking our temperatures, sanitising keys, washing hands, moving around the property which was common sense rather than restrictive. With an dollop of tolerance and understanding we had the most blissed out stay. We booked a family room for us plus our teenage girls. Double, double which was enormous, fabulous bathroom with Hamman steam, huge shower and tv in the bath. Air conditioning unit and extra upon request. Huge wonderfully comfortably beds and linen. The grounds are beautifully planted and maintained, lovely walks around the extended grounds. The spa is just wonderful, so relaxing, created to an exceptional standard and although the heat rooms are not permitted to be used due to Covid it made no difference to us. The natural pond pool , hydrotherapy outdoor pool both with beautiful sussex views and dragonflies and butterflies zipping up and down to the huge indoor pool. We loved the Watershed by the pool for coffees or Aperol Spritz and Gelato. The Botanica restaurant with its views across the pool and countryside was stunning. All open plan with a huge Terrace so beautifully designed. The food was simply wonderful, breakfast off the scale.... juices , coffee, porridge, Serrano ham & eggs and great veggie options such as Shakshuka , lunch or dinner all fabulous, every meal. Plus the government eat out to help out is offered too. Healthy, many plant based dishes but steak too, that were without exception absolutely delicious. The waiting staff, so friendly, chatty..it was wonderful. I had a massage in the spa which was cancelled due to staff sickness very apologetically and this is where right now you need to be tolerant and understanding..it wasn’t a problem for me but they very kindly found a space to reschedule it and it was worth it! I haven’t mentioned the Terrace food and views at the main hotel or the wonderful picnic hamper to watch the movie on the big screen under the stars....honestly we’ve been lucky enough to stay in some amazing hotels in the world and are thrilled that South Lodge is very close to us and will be back all being well with Covid for a winter stay as we think it will be a different but wonderful experience. A Huge well done to the management and staff in what is a tricky time. We loved every drop of South Lodge it was such a memorable stay.

This was booked as a birthday treat for my partner and I also put in a request for something special in the room upon arrival which was booked via “spa breaks” the lady advised “ A complimentary birthday card and box of chocolates are given for birthdays, which has been requested“. Which most hotels do to welcome guests for a spacial occasion.

Came here all the way from Birmingham there was nothing in the room. Just made them look so cheap after we paid so much just for one night. No lifts available to the 3 story stairs we had to to go up to get to our room with the luggage.

The hotel part is soo shabby It gives a rather “haunted” look and feel to it did not like it at all. Especially with it being so expensive per night over £290 for that is most certainly not worth it.

The spa was ok just a large pool and heated pool outdoors. The pods don’t really do much and nothing else to do here no where to go near by. The only ok food place inside the spa area closes at 5pm we were only 6 mins past it and were told “last orders just been taken and they can’t do anything for us”.

The only other option for food was their ala carte restaurant which was not appealing at all. The bar and room service again nothing much good on the menu and portions so small. We found a restaurant on just eat to get some food delivered in the end.

If you are looking for a nice spa relaxation time away this is not the place. Hoar cross hall is so much better with less than half the price this place charged and much more to offer in terms of relaxation and food. This place is Such a rip off.

I honestly would not recommend this place for a stay.

It seems like they only spent millions to renovate the spa area and get money from the membership they have available for the locals. They don’t really care much for the hotel guests who pay so much per night. Nothing spent on the very dated hotel.

We stayed here in March with another couple over the weekend. Our room (suite) was very nice and very spacious.
We are fortunate enough to stayed in many high end venues therefore I was surprised, though, that for a 5 star luxury hotel it lacks some basics. Check in is at 3pm and check out is at 11am, that's not long. The bathroom had 'frills', no fridge/mini bar, no turn down service, we saw a cobweb running from desk lamp to the wall which immediately beg the question of how clean the room really is.
We enjoyed the spa, although as in other reviews, the spa was very, very busy. Being a regular spa goer, I was however impressed with the changing facilities. I also enjoyed the spin class.
We did the wine tasting which was good.
We had dined at the Botanical restaurant, food was great but if I'm honest it was all abit too hipster for us (we're in our mid 30s). In hindsight we should of gone to The Pass.
Breakfast was lovely, great food and great service. I was surprised that, again for somewhere like this, guests were able to dine in casual shorts and sportswear.
We had a lovely walk on the beautiful grounds and appreciate the availability of wellies!
Overall, good stay and we will definitely return for the events/afternoon tea/spa/restaurants but I don't think we shall stay over night again.

I do not normally write reviews for me if a place is bad you don't go back if it is good you do. However my stay at South Lodge I felt compelled to leave a review. I was a little nervous travelling to a hotel during this strange time. Upon arrival the hotel made me feel at ease immediately with temperature checks and sanitiser stations through out the hotel. Also in our pack given on arrival had a sanitised TV remote and our own personal sanitiser. The facilities are what you would expect from a 5* location great room amazing Spa and different restaurants. The hotel and grounds are all picturesque. The food which we experienced at both Botanica (The Spa) and Camellia restaurant was of a high standard from Breakfast, only issue was the wasps when dining outside, they wanted to eat it as much as me, to lunches Sea Bream, Thai Chicken Salad, Spinach & Ricotta tortellini with Limoncello cheesecake to follow. Then dinner of Corn Feed Chicken and Monkfish with great side dishes broad beans and cabbage with bacon bits where all so good I had to mention them and highly recommend you try them. That said what has made me want to write this review where the staff at South Lodge. I found them all to be friendly attentive and very personal. With different regulations imposed on the hotel I felt the staff whilst learning these new rules dealt with everything in their stride communicating well and without doubt want you to enjoy your stay as much as you do. They all certainly understand what service and hospitality means which is where many such venues fall down. One last thing to mention is the Summertime Cordial served at the Botanica was so good I got addicted and had to take two back the the room of both evenings, I wish I could purchase this at home. Looking to go back this year and looking forward to seeing if the staff can match this high standard again.

Booked this for husbands birthday . Loved the room and the bathroom was huge and amazing . Rainfall & jet shower and tv in the bathroom. There is no fridge in the room so we asked for a bucket of ice so we could chill our champagne. My only gripe was that I had to ask for this twice and then they charged me £3.50 room service fee which I thought was a bit over the top bearing in mind that it’s not a cheap stay . Spa facilities were great and couldn’t fault although the indoor pool is not overly warm . Everything is there robes, flip flops which you get to keep . I didn’t rate the botanical restaurant at the spa. We just wanted a quick snack but the menu was fairly limited and is fairly over priced.

We had an amazing Dunday Lunch, from what I saw the Afternoon Tea was presented on tier platter, I didn't see any replenishing but may be wrong, either way you will not only have a great Afternoon Tea but enjoy a memory making experience in a very special setting with special company, enjoy every second you are there including taking a leisurely stroll around the grounds/gardens, taking in the views and atmosphere.

Answer from Paul H

I would say yes because when my granddaughter got married at South Lodge in August we all stayed over as a family. My daughter has an elderly Jack Russell dog and when she enquired about bringing her reception agreed immediately and said that they would look after the dog if their room wasn’t ready for occupation. My daughter was also allocated a ground floor room so the dog could be easily exercised. To be honest the South Lodge staff couldn’t have been more helpful and supportive. They were really helpful. I’d give them a call and discuss your requirements. There will be a charge though for taking your dog.
