The quality of food and menus at the Frenchgate reflect the passion and enthusiasm of the staff. Care is taken to source ingredients locally wherever possible and all our food is all prepared to order. Start with a selection of homemade breads, starters of hand dived scallops, Whitby white crab or carpaccio of local beef, then maybe a loin of Yorkshire lamb together with a confit of shoulder, a fillet of pan roasted halibut cooked to perfection, local game or one of our delicious vegetarian options. Our bar and wine lists match the quality and value of our food. Choose from our superb house recommendations or unique “wine flight” to classic and unusual new world offerings. As well as a range of fine spirits and liqueurs befitting the independent and non corporate feel of The Frenchgate, you can also enjoy a range of both local bottle conditioned ales, and imported beers from around the world.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Just got home after a weekend in Richmond. Our choice of the Frenchgate hotel was a good one. The rooms were really clean and housekeeping was good. Breakfast was comprehensive with a good choice of cereals and hot dishes. Nothing was too much trouble for David and his team. We would definitely recommend staying there and would return in a heartbeat if we find ourselves in North Yorkshire again.

We stayed for 1 night in Room 8 Tokyo and found the hotel to be excellent. Liked the ceiling fan over the bed as we stayed during a heatwave and the mood lighting in the bathroom was a nice touch. Everything was clean and the staff very welcoming and friendly. Very good choice for breakfast. The small car park at the back was very useful as parking in Richmond can be a problem but we were able to check in early and leave the car there.

Stayed for 2 nights in room 6. Room was a good size with a very large and comfortable bed. The hotel is situated near the centre and has good parking. The breakfast is superb with good quality and options and very well presented. We paid £157 per night which feels overly expensive even given current costs. David the owner is very friendly, talkative and quite a character. The big test is would we stay again and that would be a yes. Overall a good hotel.

Very comfortable and welcoming B&B. Nicely appointed with a lovely garden. Rooms very clean. The staff were very friendly and helpful, recommending a great cafe in town for lunch. The breakfast was excellent - with a great choice which our group made the most of. The owner was very engaging and good fun. It’s in a great central location to explore Richmond and the surrounding area.

Excellent hotel near Richmond town centre. Parking was plentiful and easy access into the hotel. Staff were super and extremely pleasant and helpful. The room was a single one but very comfortable with all the amenities. Breakfast was one of the best we have ever had. Thanks for a great stay.

Stopped over in Richmond on a journey down from Scotland. Arrived mid afternoon and found the entire street was fully parked up with cars. Evidently there is an overflow parking pitch some walk away. Eventually a vehicle moved which I could see from the room so raced down and got parked satisfactorily. The owner was in attendance for booking in and informed me there was no restaurant open despite the establishment having the name of Hotel and Restaurant. The bedroom was nicely decorated and the bed proved comfortable. As there were only venetian blinds on the window light comes in at dawn or 04.45, at this time of year which tends to waken some people. The bathroom was fitted out for display purposes rather than to facilitate satisfactory ablutions. The sink has a mixer tap nozzle tube which protrudes halfway across the bowl and stops ones face getting to water. The shower has a roof mounted shower head and is so small that any movement required to wash below waist is prevented this being the case even though I am not tall or overweight. A wall mounted removable shower head and supply hose would solve this Given the one night stay the above could have been dismissed until the breakfast scenario was played out. A nice lady arrived and I requested tea and toast while I considered what to order. I was brought one slice of toast. The dining room is devoid of any sustenance, no fruit juices, cereals etc no fear of the guests helping themselves here. Now that I had a feel for the regime it was apparent that Oliver Twist like imploration would be required, stating every last item one would gratefully receive for breakfast. The experience was not what I have come to expect in North Yorkshire and was not offset by the payment re3quired.

Very spontaneous last minute visit when driving past Richmond from North East - called direct and owner David gave us a great last minute deal on a superior room with breakfast. Our room ‘Tokyo’ had some unique and great features such as the huge bed, ceiling fan and bath for two which we enjoyed. The full breakfast in the morning was one of the best have had and the dining area was lovely looking out onto Frenchgate which is a charming street. The stay was certainly enhanced though by David’s hospitality - he clearly loves his job and was super helpful, entertaining and gave us a great deal.

The hotel is located 15 minutes walk from the town centre and has private parking to the rear the positives are the owner is a character and very accommodating the rooms we had were nice and clean and nice towels. The breakfast each morning was very good great service and lovely quality food. To be honest I don’t think you could beat the breakfast at any establishment in Richmond. The negatives are we had drinks when we arrived and we were charged £9.50 for a glass of wine £4.50 for coffees this is extremely expensive and prices should be displayed on the Bar. Overall we all enjoyed our stay and due to expensive Bar prices l give establishment 8 out of 10
