Richmond is a lovely and largely Georgian town and this most comfortable hotel is located in a quiet, cobbled street which, being a cul-de-sac is particularly peaceful, David Todd, the proprietor, made us very welcome and did everything he could to accomodate a mobility problem from which I'm currently suffering. The bedroom was slightly on the small side but was...

On our infrequent visits to Richmond, we always stay here, and always receive the same friendly welcome. The staff are charming and helpful, the dinner delicious, and the 'Mousey' bedroom antique and special! Within easy walking distance of the town centre, and would definitely recommend.

I traveled alone to visit friends. The Frenchgate was very clean, friendly staff and the £39 five course dinner was value for money and absolutely delicious. The American breakfast was also lovely. I felt safe on my own and could walk into the centre of Richmond easily. My room was v.good but a blackout blind would be a good edition.

We recently visited the Frenchgate for a very welcome overnight break from the kids and as a birthday treat. Given the fact this opportunity is very rare we hoped that our stay would be amazing and we were certainly not disappointed. From the fantastic welcome, through to the attention to detail in our amazing room, an unforgettable meal which was...

A lovely establishment in a prime location for exploring Richmond and it's surrounds. The staff were very friendly and accommodating. The rooms were tasteful and fittings were of a very high standard. A lovely garden and peaceful retreat despite it's central location. We would certainly revisit. On the down side we did find the bathrooms a bit cramped and the...

This hotel is worth every penny. The service, accomodation and attention to detail were impressive. The food was out of this world - Michelin star quality. Also the circular track to the old abbey was a really beautiful walk and gave us an appetite for dinner.

Friendly staff, professional, great food, host and wine. We had a lovely stay and were made to feel very welcome. Wine flights recommended. If parking, go past Frenchgate and take the first right for the car park.

We recently celebrated our first wedding anniversary here and could not have asked for a warmer welcome or a more relaxing stay. The hotel is tastefully decorated throughout, and we were lucky to stay in the bridal suite with its its beautiful antique furnishings (with Mousey Thompson original carvings) and amazingly comfortable four poster bed. The food and service were...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The quality of food and menus at the Frenchgate reflect the passion and enthusiasm of the staff. Care is taken to source ingredients locally wherever possible and all our food is all prepared to order. Start with a selection of homemade breads, starters of hand dived scallops, Whitby white crab or carpaccio of local beef, then maybe a loin of Yorkshire lamb together with a confit of shoulder, a fillet of pan roasted halibut cooked to perfection, local game or one of our delicious vegetarian options. Our bar and wine lists match the quality and value of our food. Choose from our superb house recommendations or unique “wine flight” to classic and unusual new world offerings. As well as a range of fine spirits and liqueurs befitting the independent and non corporate feel of The Frenchgate, you can also enjoy a range of both local bottle conditioned ales, and imported beers from around the world. ... more   less
