The Alton House Hotel presents a mixed bag, with guests appreciating its clean rooms and spotless bathrooms, yet others find the atmosphere lacking in charm, citing dated decor and uninspired table settings. Amenities are generally seen as satisfactory, but issues with breakfast service and room upkeep are not uncommon. Opinions on service vary greatly, from commendations of efficiency to frustrations over disorganization. Room sizes and conditions have come under scrutiny, with some guests deeming them outdated. Additionally, questions about value for money arise, with critiques centered on the cost of services and food.

This would have been a 5 star review however the included breakfast was poor. It was very greasy and the toast/croissants were cold, server was not rude but not pleasant either and wore her face mask around her chin - this may not bother some people but annoyed me.
Despite this the receptionist was extremely helpful and lovely. There was a slight mishap with rooms when we first arrived (which is fine, it happens) and the receptionist did everything she could until we were 100% happy. The hotel rooms are lovely and ours was very spacious and well decorated. The only slight thing is the rooms vary a lot in size so you may find your paying the same price as someone with a huge room when yours is small.
Overall the hotel was nice they just need to work on their breakfast provision.

We visited for Sunday lunch and as far as we know its the only Carvery in the area. The cost is £11.95 per adult, one of us is veggie so we had the Nut roast (which was surprisingly tasty!)

The service was a bit hit and miss, the staff seemed to be running around like headless chickens.

After about 20mins the nut roast was taken behind the carvery as they didn't what table ordered it...

The food was really tasty to be fair to them. The potatos and yorkshires were really good, then there was leeks, cabbage, broccoli, peas and sweetcorn and some other bits. The meat was tasty and generous portion served.

The total bill came to £32 for two carvery, 1 magners, and 1 pint of lemonade.

We would definitely visit again.

It was quiet in my room as I had requested when booking and with the help of the supplied fan I slept well even though the nights were humid. The shower was good and everything in the room was clean even if some of the wooden surfaces were showing signs of wear and tear. The restaurant was overpriced in my opinion.

An absolutely amazing stay. From the moment we checked in until we left the staff couldn’t do enough for us. The hotel is tastefully decorated and extremely clean throughout. The grounds are well kept and afford a lovely opportunity to stretch your legs.
Location
4 minute walk to the station with frequent trains to London. On a bus route to Winchester and Guildford. Ample free parking on site. 3 minutes walk to the town with a variety of good pubs, cafes and eateries.
Room
Having mobility issues we requested a ground floor room which came with a wet room. The room which is beautifully decorated and spotless, was huge and had a queen size bed two chairs wardrobe and ample drawer space. The bathroom was modern with a good shower fluffy towels (replaced everyday) shampoo and shower gel. Much to our delight there were French Windows leading to a patio with a table and chairs. Tea and coffee making facilities were supplied.
Bar
A well stocked bar with a selection of beverages comfy seating in an open and welcoming space. Two outside seating areas. We did not eat at the hotel but food was available.
Value for money
100% excellent value for money.

If you want to stay in Alton then this is the place to be.

The smell of stale smoke from the dirty old carpet was overpowering. The carpet was also half- eaten and threadbare. The windows were rotting and not double glazed. The chair was also threadbare and there was mould behind the taps in the bath. We would not leave our shoes or bags on the floor or on the chair out of fear of them being eaten by whatever creature is destroying the disgusting smelly carpet, and we put towels down on the floor to walk on it. Unfortunately everywhere was fully booked due to the train strike and Real Ale Train otherwise we would have left straight away. We were charged £119 for this disgusting room so I asked for a refund, but that was a week ago now and still no refund has materialised. This hotel was probably beautiful many decades ago as the building itself has some lovely features but the room we stayed in was the worst I have ever seen and was outrageously over-priced.

The location of the hotel was perfect for me being virtually within sight of the station and just a short walk into the very pleasant town of Alton. The staff were welcoming and pleasant at all times from inital arrival to departure. I had a single room which was of a good size and very comfortable and was fortunately very quiet. The bedroom and bathroom were in perfet condition and really well looked after. It was the sort of place that you immediately feel very relaxed in. It is the sort of hotel that you look forward to returning to as I certainly will.

Stayed for two nights in August as part of large party and was gobsmacked at the service and overall experience.

Room was tiny, dirty, dated and falling apart. Lacking facilities such as proper shower. It was filthy, dust and dirt all over, finger prints / grime on mirror, grime all over grout etc in bathroom, lots of dead flies in light fitting. Bed was uncomfortable. Toilet paper was probably 5p for 50 rolls (think tracing paper quality). Hotel management need replacing frankly as the poor staff seemed to be doing their best but clearly had no structure / processes. Dinner took over 2 hours to be served. Breakfast was 8-10am yet staff looked shocked when I arrived at 8am, it then took 20 minutes for food to appear and even then it appeared in drips and drabs so both mornings I had a part complete breakfast. Coffee was instant and you had to ask for it. To top all this off after returning the second night at around 11am, tired and wanting to just get to sleep so I could leave sooner I was amazed to find the hotel had a garden party with DJ music until mid night followed by guest being loud (as you do at a party) for another hour in the garden and didn’t think to let any one know! Apparently doing your best to make sure paying guest can sleep isn’t necessary anymore!! Even when it’s literally what your business offers on paper!

Absolutely unbelievable that all of this was considered anywhere near okay - especially for £90 a night!

Absolute rip off - avoid at all costs .

Had a business meeting with 2 others and needed an easily accessible central venue as we were coming from different locations and none of us waas familiar with Alton.

The restaurant was not busy, we appeared to be the only 3 guests for lunch on 10th August.

We all ordered a chicken Caesar salad. When they arrived after a lengthy wait it was poorly presented and contained only a handful of shredded iceberg lettuce, some greasy fried bread croutons and a few strips of chicken. A Weatherspoons Caesar salad at £6 would have been better value.

Estimated cost of ingredients £1.50 per salad. Price charged £14.50
Total bill £59:60

On reflection as the person who suggested the venue, I should have asked to see the duty manager and made a complaint before we left. Actually I should have refused to pay for the food at all as all three of us sent the food back partially uneaten.

If you are planning on using the Alton House Hotel for a lunch meeting my advice is don't. Use it as a rendezvous point, move your cars to one of the many carparks and eat elsewhere.

I'll start by saying all the staff who I met were absolutely lovely, BUT it is the way the hotel is now run in a money-grabbing manner that lets it down massively. None of the issues I experienced were the fault of any of the team working whilst I was there. To outline: overpriced food - massively overpriced. The evening buffet for 80 wedding guests was overpriced per head and there were only a handful of sandwiches left after 20 minutes. The 6 sandwiches that were left were of no real quality. The hotel allowed scaffolding to be erected on the morning of the wedding - and the scaffolders were immediately outside the suite the bride was staying in from 8am. The guests and the hotel staff were not warned about the scaffolding works. The family room had a slow draining sink, a shower that dribbled out, badly wired plug sockets, a very tatty leather chair, and a toilet that didn't flush correctly. The staff were not allowed to decorate the tables, so left it to the bride, her friends and family to sort this. There was no member of staff acting as MC or just 'being on hand'. There were just no 'extras' provided by the hotel to make a wedding day special and to think 'I'm really pleased they chose this hotel for their wedding'. It is not like it used to be, probably due to a lack of competition, and that is a real shame.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Alton House Hotel. We stayed 9 nights. We were in Alton doing family research. Our room was large. We actually had 2 rooms, which was great so we could put our luggage in the second room out of the way. Bathroom was a little small and had no real space to put personal items as well as towels. We made do. The shower stall was large, but only had a half screen, therefore the floor was continually wet.

The staff were wonderful. Very friendly and helpful. I had some food sensitivity issues and they were all aware, and they made sure everything went smoothly.

There is no elevator as this is an historic house. We made several trips upstairs to take our luggage up to our room (we were on a long trip within 2 climate zones and had a lot of luggage). However there were staff to help if we wanted their help.

Great location for us. We didn't have to drive in town. We left our car in the parking lot and walked everywhere, unless we wanted to go out of town.

We would definitely stay here again if we are back in Alton. So happy with everything about our stay here.
