Come in from the cold and enjoy the warm staff and confines of this hotel. A nice restaurant (if the price is too high order some small food from the bar). Rooms are small but comfortable. Location is a short walk into town.

By staying at this hotel, you take part of the long coal mining history of Svalbard. The hotel was earlier housing for the salaried staff at Store Norske Kullkompani. Spitsbergen Hotel (or Funken) is a ten-minute walk away from the city center. Every room have beautiful view over Longyearbyen and Sverdruphamaren (mountain). The rooms are well equipped. The staff is... More

The Spitsbergen Hotel sits slightly above town with great views of the fjord and surrounding mountains. The hotel has very efficient and friendly service and accustomed to hosting groups and organizing activities (it is linked to a travel agency). The rooms were comfortable and warm. And the breakfasts were an endless buffet of traditional Norwegian food which provided an excellent... More

Close to the main street, helpfull personel - they suggested us what to do and what do not do (go unarmed out of town). We were there in December and it was really not a good feeling walking to the Seed Vault in the dark. We`ve bought nice souvenirs in the reception of hotel.

We stayed here for two nights, before and after our tour of Spitsbergen Island. The location is great, the room was spacious and comfortable, about 10 minutes walk from the town center. The main building was named Funken hotell and it was the coal company's official residence. It seems to go back to old time. At the entrance, as in... More

Looking at the other hotels available in Longyearbyen when being there, I think this is one of the best choice if you look at value for money. It is 10 minutes walk from the main street in Longyearbyen, but all the services are included in the hotel with a bar serving also food at any time (which can be usefull... More

Quite a basic hotel with small but adequate rooms but much further out of town than they try to tell you - and you need to allow for the hilly bits too when walking. No hot water the first night due to a very large tour group staying, shower leaked and used up all the towels mopping up, BYO soap... More

This is a surprisingly elegant and comfortable hotel in Longyearbyen. Very pleasant rooms. Excellent breakfast. Spacious public areas. Helpful and friendly staff. We also had a very good evening meal. It is on the edge of town, quite a steep walk, but the bus stops outside.

We had a hotel booking for 2 nights via the corporate website. When we went to the front desk, the reception couldn't find our booking. Without doing any further checks, she didn't want to serve us even though we produced the printout booking slip and just told us the hotel was full! Luckily, the other traveller told her to service... More

Room was fine. Small and outdated; not a big deal. Bathroom seemed clean, but it's an old place so even tho it appeared clean- still just felt dingy and grimy. The real cause for the 3 stars, was the front desk staff. One of the girls was just downright curt and rude and not at ALL helpful. There aren't many... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
At Spitsbergen Hotel you can enjoy modern comforts in historical surrounds – the foundations this impressive building were set back in 1946. The building soon became known as ‘Funken’, as it housed the single administrative workers or ‘funksjonærer’, as well as being the reception centre for the mining company ‘Store Norske’. The building was a hive of activity and social activity for the company’s office workers. It was only in the middle of the 1980s that the last office workers moved out, and ‘Funken’ began to be used as housing for visitors. In 1993 the building was bought by Spitsbergen Travel, at which point extensions were made including the new restaurant. Throughout the additions and renovations, serious work has been done to protect the unique history and atmosphere of Spitsbergen Hotel – we hope you enjoy it, and your stay! ... more   less
