#2 of 5 B&Bs / Inns in Svalbard
Situated about 90 km west from Longyearbyen you can find our hotel Isfjord Radio. After a gratifying day of gliding over the glaciers, mountains, and frozen fjords by dogsled or snowmobile, or by an open boat safari across the Arctic Ocean, you’re home. This 1933 built solitude outpost for radio operators doesn’t look like much from the outside. As you enter, though, you’ll discover a different world. The contrast between the surrounding rough coastal landscape and the modern luxury hotel inside is a sight to behold. It is easy to forget where you are, but a quick dip in the Arctic Ocean will bring you back. Later in the evening, as you lay on your bed surrounded by the Arctic silence, you realize that it has been one of the best days of your life. Isfjord Radio is part of Basecamp Explorer Spitsbergen, which operates day trips and expeditions from Basecamp Hotel and Trapper’s Station to Nordenskiold Lodge and Isfjord Radio.

This was probably the highlight of our trip, the hotel is beautiful and well set up. There are huge windows so you can take in the stunning scenery and see wildlife wandering straight past the hotel. The food was delicious as well. The best part though were the guided waking tours we did with Marcus, he was so knowledgeable and friendly, I learnt so much from him on every walk. Highly recommended and I hope we can visit again!

What a wonderful, desolate, windswept, remarkable wilderness surrounding this hotel! The colors and the atmosphere are unlike anything else you’ll experience on this planet. An approx. 3 hr snowmobile ride takes you there, be sure to dress warmly! Isfjord radio doesn’t look like much on the outside, but the inside is very cozy, elegant, comfortable and nice! A great hostess Malin met us and provided food and drinks when we arrived. It was -27 Celsius this day, so we skipped the sauna all together...next time! I could stare out the windows for hours, watching the wild reindeer slowly pass by or scouting for polar bears on the horizon... The meal which is included in the price was absolutely outstanding! We did not expect or anticipate this! Fresh and local ingredients (or at least from farms in Northern Norway). A great selection of wine and other spirits. We ordered the wine package which was paired excellently with the food. A feast for body and soul. Breakfast was wonderful as well, and a great start on the chilly ride back to Longyearbyen. Everything was very clean, the staff was so friendly and welcoming and our stay was magical.

If I had more stars than five Isfjord Radio would get them. We had an amazing experience right at the end of the summer season. Certainly not a conventional place to stay, it is an hour and a half or so by boat from Longyearbyen and set in the most amazing wilderness of snowy tundra and mountains at the mouth of the fjord. It is a historic building and beautifully fitted out inside. I loved the living space available to guests including the library. Our bedrooms were clean and comfortable with fantastic views too. Staff are welcoming and friendly. Food excellent - very tasty and well presented. A great opportunity to try some traditional Norwegian cuisine. During our stay we also very much enjoyed some walks with our guide, Henrik, as well as an Arctic swim! I loved every minute and this is the most wonderfully memorable hotel I have stayed in.

Loved it. Scenic, peaceful. Stylish, friendly, welcoming. Memorable food! Hard to leave. Thanks to Heinrich for taking us on mind blowing excursions and big thanks to Tom for piloting the boat safely through rough waters

My family had an amazing journey/experience. The accommodations and food were excellent. The location was truly on the edge of the world. Our guide, Thomas, was fantastic. We visited glaciers, saw wildlife, and fished. He was patient, knowledgeable, funny and helpful. If you want to make memories - this is the way to do it.
