I pleased to find that the improvements at Black Sail have not taken away the character since the last time I stayed. I love the community feel at this hostel sharing stories over dinner with the fire drying everyone's wet gear and the silence once...More

We had to book this months in advance, and it was worth it. We built our entire Coast to Coast walking itinerary around getting a bunk here for the night. Remote, beautiful, cosy, social and friendly. The food was brilliant and hearty. The board games...More

We specifically went over to Black Sail today to look at the recent renovations and enjoy a sit down inside ("the common room is left open during the day") and an afternoon cup of tea from the advertised honesty cafe ("We sell tea, coffee and...More

We walked over Scarth Gap on a pretty windy day. There is an honesty cafe so we had a nice mug of tea before heading back. It's cosy and welcoming. We will definitely book a stay here, perhaps before heading up Pillar.

    About
    Hotel description
Location, location, location. YHA Black Sail has it. Remote and accessible only on foot, it’s a rural retreat that lovers of the great outdoors can normally only dream about. Located in a traffic-free valley that is being returned to a ‘wild’ state, it’s as tranquil as a stay in the Lakes gets.

Hi there, May I know by any chance I could go to YHA Black Sail through any public transport (to the closest road Honister Pass). I want to go there in the coming Easter break. Hope to hear from you soon! Thanks in advance! Cheers! Have a great week ahead!

What is the walk there like? I am a keen walker and distance is not an issue BUT I do get vertigo and although a frequent visitor to the Lake Distrcict I am aware that some walks I just can not do in safety- Striding Edge for example- so when the route is described as a mountain path I have visions of sheer drops to one or both sides- how "good" is the path for a vertigo sufferer? Thank you

No drops at all, it's a woodland path from the car park or YHA Ennerdale. Hope that helps Andy
