stayed 1 night 20/9/15 with my wife [special occasion], very happy with the experience. staff are very polite and nothing is too much trouble for them. very pleasant experience. food good, room and service good, only negative point i can think of is we would have preferred room on 2nd floor with view of lake etc but still happy.

This hotel, which we have visited many times is situated just a few miles from Keswick, in the Lake District. If you want a strenuous break or just a relaxing time, this is the place for you. Spacious rooms ( try for a front room facing road), excellent cuisine and modern yet cosy lounges.....can't wait to go again

Just got back from a short stay at The Borrowdale Hotel, I start by saying what a lovely hotel this is, our first visit at the hotel and it will not be the last! We were welcomed by a lovely young Cumbrian local girl "Molly". What an asset to the company! She was so helpful and went out her way...

We have been staying here for 20 years or more, and have seen the quality gradually decline over the years - not enough to make it bad, but just not at its former best. However, the refit and new manager seem to have made a huge difference. The main public areas are light and comfy, the food is superbly cooked...

One night stay with Secret Escapes. Full of positives and a few negatives. The staff were all very nice and were professional. Lovely bar, modern lounge and conservatory which you could easily whittle away the hours. Good dining experience though not excellent. Beautiful Sirloin steak overpowered by a too peppery sauce and desserts felt like they had been prepared a...

A typically English hotel with some lovely features. Restaurant offers fine food with either a 3 or 4 course option with a free Amuse Bouche which was always interesting. The house rule which must be obeyed is that jeans (no matter which designer) are not permitted in the restaurant for evening meals, though any attire can be worn (including walking...

from the booking process to the end of our stay, this was a delightful experience. We were 6 in our party and we took advantage of the 2 night DBB. Two of the rooms were standard doubles and one was upgraded to room 46 which was perfect for our needs. The administration during our stay was excellent. On arrival we...

We have just returned from a week in the Lakes, which started with two nights at the BH on a DBB offer in a prestige room. It has a great location, 2 minutes walk from the Lake, a bus stop across the road and has fantastic food with an imaginative menu. The staff were very helpful and even brought fresh...

This hotel was adequate for our overnight but left feeling it failed to deliver the quality it could. Possibly the noisy kitchen fans (don't take room 4) and smokers from the lounge below. The dinner was more style than substance and the food certainly not reflecting of their much acclaimed "silver service". Breakfast, which was good was spoil because it...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Nestled at the foot of Shepherd's Crag in the beautiful valley of Borrowdale, this completely refurbished 4 Star hotel has a totally unique atmosphere enveloping the visitors from the moment they arrive. Warm and welcoming fires in the Winter and cool drinks and Lakeland cream teas on the lawns in the Summer served with a smile. Built in 1866, the Borrowdale Hotel has an interesting history with the original 41 room bells, which, although no longer working, are still proudly displayed outside the reception area. The restaurant has been refurbished to a very high standard and is very elegant and comfortable. It also now boasts a superb walk-in wine cellar stocked with some very interesting bottles. During the day the lounge bar and conservatory are open for light lunches and afternoon teas and in the evening a splendid 5 course silver service dinner can be enjoyed in the restaurant with coffee and mints served in the lounges. The 40 cosy bedrooms have all been refurbished within the last 3 years all have TV, telephone and hospitality tray. There are also 2 extra large, easy-access rooms too. If you are arriving or leaving on a Sunday make sure not to miss the famous Sunday lunch - it is well worth trying, but remember to book your table well in advance, as it is particular popular with both locals and residents. For those looking for dog friendly hotels, all of our bedrooms are dog friendly and are available for well behaved dogs. Please contact reservations for information about our dog friendly accommodation. ... more   less
