Nestled at the foot of Shepherd's Crag in the beautiful valley of Borrowdale, this 4-star hotel has a totally unique atmosphere enveloping the visitors from the moment they arrive. Built in 1866, the Borrowdale Hotel has an interesting history with the original 41 room bells, which, although no longer working, are still proudly displayed outside the reception area. The AA Rosette restaurant is very elegant and comfortable, which also boasts a superb walk-in wine cellar stocked with some very interesting bottles. During the day the lounge bar and conservatory are open for light lunches and afternoon teas and in the evening a splendid 5 course silver service dinner can be enjoyed in the AA Rosette restaurant with coffee and mints served in the lounges. The 40 cosy bedrooms come equipped with TV, telephone and hospitality tray. For those looking for dog friendly hotels, all of our bedrooms are dog friendly and are available for well-behaved dogs.

Booked it during lockdown for a special birthday treat. The room was not as advertised, although very clean. There was no seating area as promised and it probably wins the award for the smallest en-suite in the world. Things continued to go downhill from there with slow service in the bar and a very disappointing dinner service taking nearly 2.5 hrs to complete with incorrect orders, raw potatoes etc. and all with no apologies or even a smile. Warning: do not order the daily roast on the menu as it’s served like a school dinner from a trolley and plonked on the table covered in a lukewarm gravy. I would comment that, in general, the food was excellent and very tasty so hats off to the chefs! On the second day the Manager returned on duty and there was a palpable change in the atmosphere of brighter, speedier, more friendly and professional service. We asked to talk to him about our stay which ended up with him complaining that he’d been away for 3 days (the first in 15 months??) and had returned to a barrage of complaints from guests from rooms to food to service. No real acknowledgment or obvious apology for the service we’d received; more an attitude of self-pity. Would we stay here again? Definitely not. It’s expensive, old-fashioned and poorly managed. We are all aware of the problems facing the hospitality industry and subsequent lack of staff (our own daughter works in the same industry) and as a result wanted to support them. Not worth the expense or bother.

I was the leader of a party of 10 adults (all of whom work together). We had planned a long weekend in the Lake District and I had selected the Borrowdale hotel based on my long years of happy association with that establishment. We were delighted and I felt that my choice had been totally vindicated. The staff were outstanding and provided perfect attention, despite the difficulties of the Covid era. The food was at its usual outstanding level. Many thanks to all the members of the Hotel team who made this such a successful and memorable trip.

Dear R_H_Stables, We are delighted to see more of our guests writing reviews on this site. It is encouraging to our guests, so that they are comfortable under our present restrictions, and the whole team who can see our guests relaxing in a comfortable and safe environment. Throughout these passed few weeks, it has been reassuring to see many of our guests returning to the hotel in the knowledge that the whole team are ensuring both theirs and our guests safety. We are happy that you chose the hotel to have your long weekend and thoroughly enjoyed yourselves whilst here. We do look forward to seeing you all again in the not too distant future. My kindest regards George and Team.

Dear Wooty13, Thank you so much for your review. I am always grateful when our guests do give us constructive feedback. This enables us to pass this onto our Directors. As a result, with reference to your note on the WFi, we are at present having our internet system upgraded. We are delighted that although this was a small point, you did enjoy all aspects of your stay with us. Kind regards George and Team.

Maybe the food is worthy of an AA Rosette - but I understood there should be a high proportion of local ingredients yet they seemed under represented across the hotel for example at breakfast butter from Gloucester, standard Jams found country wide, eggs that look as though they could have been from a supermarket not the deep coloured rich yolk indicating premium local eggs. Elsewhere it may meet the 4 star quality mark but there are issues Standard rooms are probably smaller than in a travel lodge, walls & ceilings hardly surpress much noise from rooms either above or adjacent. Service left some customers waiting far too long. Having stayed the night before in an indisputable 4 star hotel at the same price per night including dinner, the Borrowdale does not seem in the same league. The positives are the friendly ladies on reception, being dog friendly and best of all the location but there are premium alternatives nearby. Would I return - to stay: unlikely - to eat: probably but they could do better.

Dear JasperCarrot, Thank you for your insightful review. I can only emphasise how much of our menu, both restaurant and bar is has locally sourced items on it. The eggs are from a very local farm that not only supplies this hotel, but the other hotels within the group. At times we do have to obtain items from elsewhere due to demand. I am sorry that you were not happy with your room. Under different circumstances, had this been brought to my attention, I would have looked to perhaps offer you an upgrade, however since, like other hotels, we are full each day, I would have been unable to do this for you at the time. Unfortunately, since Borrowdale Hotel is of some age, there is noise aspects that we are unable to avert. While you have enjoyed some aspects of your stay I am sorry that you did not enjoy the whole experience. With kindest regards George and Team.
