Stayed January 26 to February 2 Here are my observations starting with arrival in Cancun. Finding our bus was a total nightmare. Don’t ask for advice to the taxis, they will mislead you and lie to get you to buy a ride with them. By lying I mean they will tell you you're not on the list by pretending they are bus drivers. Make sure you know exactly who your bus company is and find them. It was confusing as they all have company shirts on so it’s impossible to know if you're dealing with a taxi driver or the bus company. Bus ride took over two hours. Once arrived, check in was fast and very efficient. We were three adult’s/ 2 rooms. We had paid for the ocean front view. I had emailed the hotel a week prior to arriving to ensure we got what we paid for and I wanted a villa close to everything and on the third floor. We were assigned Villa #5 rooms 0525 and 0526. The view from our room was amazing. Room was brand new and the bed was very comfortable. I highly recommend you try to stay in villas 5 and below. These ones are very well situated. This resort is gigantic!!!!! and having a centrally located room can really facilitate your stay. Please note me and my travel partners have extensive travel and living experiences abroad. I have visited over 80 countries and I have lived in 12 countries. I have been to almost every island in the Caribbean and have also been to Cuba 13 times. This was my first time in the north east of Mexico but had been to Puerto Vallarta. I chose Tulum as I’m a scuba diver and wanted to dive Cozumel. We had days with very strong winds and white caps that derailed my dive days to Cozumel and I was only able to dive the reef off the coast with the local scuba shop. The reaf was almost dead. It was very sad. No colours. Terrible visibility. All greys and browns. The seafloor of the reef was covered in dead corals. Barely any fish and life. It’s all bleached. I almost cried from sadness seeing that ecosystem. The dive team is very well organized but the dive boat is moored off the beach so you have to walk/swim to the boat. Now for the beach. The sand is nice but it’s very hard to walk off the sand into the water. The floor in the water is covered with rocks and it hurts like hell to walk in it. Also seaweed !!!!! They work around the clock to clean up the seaweed from the beach but it’s a disaster. It’s not the hotel’s fault but if you want a pristine beach….. See pics I am attaching to this post. Ok now the food. Knowing Cuba by heart and always knowing I won’t eat when I go to Cuba I was expecting gourmet food at this resort. Especially paying over $2000 CND for a one week trip. The buffet food is subpar. I wanted to go in the kitchen and cook my own scrambled eggs. I dont get it but their eggs were floating in water. I would eat a few pancakes and a hard boiled egg each morning to say I put something in my stomach. For lunch though this is amazing. They have the Truck lunch bar in the south central side and they have another lunch shack right beside the main pool near the beach also. The food at both places was amazing and well organized. I would recommend you go on your first day check on the week's menu at the lunch shack as they have different things each day. The truck has the same menu each day but lots of variety and they’re beef burgers are just what I needed for a late lunch. For supper a la carte restaurant. The Don Pablo is the best but still just slightly better than average. The other à la carte restaurants we tried were the Peruvian and the Gourmet which we gave 2/10. We didn’t eat and left starving. The buffet for supper is a total disappointment. For a 5 star resort this is totally unbelievable and unacceptable in my humble opinion. Cleanliness. This is the cleanest hotel/resort any of us had ever seen. You could walk in a beach bathroom and eat off the floor. They take their cleaning very seriously. Wifi. We chose the free wifi option and it was PERFECT. There is à premium wifi you can pay for when you connect. I didn’t hear anyone get this or need this. We all had full wifi bars everywhere and even on the beach. Able to send pics and vids easily. Overall this hotel ranked very high in terms of their logistics. They have their sh***t together. This place is totally geared toward families with young kids. If you have young kids I recommend you go here. If you are single and looking to mingle do not come here. It’s all young families and couples. Well the week I was there it was and can only imagine during the March breaks it will be the same. A word on the pools. The main pool is located at the back of the lobby right when enter the hotel. The main pool area consists of 3-4 différents pools on différent levels. There you will find numerous locations for drinks and activities such as the noon water aerobics class that a lot of people participate in and also pool volleyball. Kids are allowed here but it’s not the kids' pool. The kids pool is located on the south end and it looks amazing and from what some parents told us their kids had a blast. Lots of slides and entertainment for them. Hope this review helps someone.

Arrival/check-in: we booked through Tui and done the online check-in on the website 5 days prior to coming. We managed to book the restaurants on the app before coming - we had 7 visits. Would recommend doing this before you come as we enquired about changing an existing booking and the were full for our last week. Arrival was quick and easy and bell boys take you and luggage on the cart to your room. Rooms- we booked a junior suite with Tui. We got the old style room. They managed to change us on day 3 as the hotel was full. We got a superior room in Villa 3 - amazing location 🤩. The cost was meant to be $10 per person per night but we didn’t have to pay. Got a helpful manager called Fernando who was great! We are a party of 4, 2 adults and 2 kids; 15 & 12. We had 2 doubles and a double sofa. I would book a suite if returning. There was plenty of storage space for clothes and 4 cases. The toilet is weird and quite see-through so we avoided that area if someone was in. I didn’t think the shower was as see through as others have said; this wasn’t an issue for us. If you are short of towels or have any issues with your room. Dial 8585 to concierge and they will sort it your issue. We left 50 pesos in the safe every few days with a note for beer, coke, Fanta and crisps. These were left every day even when we didn’t leave note or tip! Cleaners were in every day. Pool areas - plenty of sun beds, no need to get up early unless you require one with shade as these are very limited at the main pool. The kids pool has lots of shade and lots of beds. We spent time at all the pools, including the Coba one a couple of days which is really good. The quiet pool is lovely, good music and a chilled vibe. There are Bali beds but I think they are hard to get. We managed to get one on an afternoon as someone left - they are amazing! The main pool has a lot going on; water polo every day, aerobics classes etc. the swim up bar is a plus. Restaurants- the main buffet has so much choice; we only ate in there for dinner 3/4 times but the options are amazing. The Mexican section is so good!! They have a grill area, seafood area with prawns, scallops, salmon etc and they will cook it fresh for you. Pasta area were you choose your ingredients and they cook it fresh (I had this twice and it was great - sometimes a wait but worth it). So much choice for breakfast and lunch too. The waiters serve you drinks to your table. For lunch options, there is also the food trick and main pool bbq area. The food truck does get busy at peak times but it’s great, I had the help yourself nachos most days! The bbq at the main pool is great too. Coba pool food area is a lot better in my opinion. It’s a small buffet but at the pool area, with salads, wraps, fresh pizza, burgers etc. Dinners; we ate at Thali (Indian) - very good. We had the sample dish which was tasters of a lot of the options on the menu. It’s a lovely restaurant with great staff. Tequila (Mexican). Although this is a buffet, it’s very good. The theming is amazing, we got to wear the sombreros for photos. Don Pablo - absolutely loved this place, my favourite of them all. We had a large table for 8 as we went with friends. The water, Filiberto was brilliant. We all had the filet steak but he brought extra prawn dishes, fries and rice for the table. There was so much food but excellent quality. We had Mayan coffe afterwards. Le Gourmet- similar to Don Pablo - amazing food, we all had steak there too. Although these are fine dining, don’t be put off if you have kids. There is a kids menu in each restaurant but it’s not that great. We used the opportunity to try new things, such as lobster Thermidor and fois gras. The restaurants are not pretentious at all and we were made to feel welcome. La Gran Tortuga - rodizio restaurant. I was most looking forward to this but this was my least favourite of all 7. The quality of the meat was not the same as the other restaurants and the atmosphere was a bit meh! Others in my party did thoroughly enjoy their food though, so this is just my opinion. Mikado Tepanyaki- this was very good. The ordering was a bit rushed and we had to initially ask a few times for more wine, but the service then picked up. The live cooking is interactive and the food was delicious. Mashua was our last meal last night. It’s Japanese and Peruvian fusion. The menu is a bit out there but we all tried new things; octopus and ceviche. It’s not to everyone’s taste (including mine) but love to try new things. The soup and main dishes were amazing though. You can order steak, prawn and chicken either grilled or in the wok. The restaurant is lovely and we had a fab waiter called Cristian who took a lot of time to explain what each thing in the menu was. I’m glad we tried this as it’s somewhere we wouldn’t visit back home. Sun- it’s very hot!! Bring lots of sun cream and tops for the kids. Remember a hat too! Beach- some days there was a lot of seaweed but the guys are there all day every day clearing it. Bits of Tulum beach are rocky but just walk along a bit towards La Gran Tortuga entrance and it’s more Sandy. The Coba beach is much better, hardly any seaweed or rocks- it’s only about 10 mins along. Excursions - we booked Xel-ha and Xcaret direct and made our own way they’d and back via a taxi. It was quite expensive but still worked out cheaper than adding on the transport option; plus you have the benefit of going and coming back when it suits you rather than a schedule. These parks are amazing. Water shoes are essential. We also done the snorkelling, zip wires and 4x4 quad biking. We booked this through Destino Riviera. I would highly recommend this trip. Note though; the zip wire is 100 feet high ams 1 km long. Totally took me out of my comfort zone but loved it! We also booked our airport transfers with Destino riviera too. We went into play del Carmen 2 nights using taxi and collectivo. The collectivo is great but you do have a bit of a walk to get to 5th Avenue, about 20/25 mins. 5th Avenue had great shops and is very lively at night. We were with the kids so didn’t go into any of the places. We had a meal one night and street food the other; both were great! Staff- the stafff at this hotel are brilliant. We haven’t met a ride or unhelpful person in 2 weeks. They honestly can’t do enough for you; with or without tips. We did tip throughout the holiday, usually 20 or 50 pesos at the bars or for services and 200 for evening meals. This is obviously different for everyone. I hope this has been helpful. I need to get back to pack 4 cases 😩😬😭

Racism displayed by some staff members. Several times trolleys refused to pick us up, telling us they weren’t going in our direction, only to see them there when we arrived at the area. Seating our large group at separate tables telling us a section was closed only to see others being sat in that section. I thought I was overreacting until another group was moved to Coba because they complained about the racism they experienced on this resort. The app to book a La carte dinners and spa appointments was booking others appointments on my room, which was preventing me from booking anything for myself and also didn’t allow me to participate in dinners with my family. I brought it to the attention of the manager, who basically acted like it was no big deal. He suggested that I cancel the appointments. I told him if I do it would cancel other’s appointments, he said just tell them. There was over 70 people in our party so that wasn’t possible. He said well you have four more days. We were there for a wedding and didn’t have a lot of time to spend like that. He didn’t seem to care at all. IF YOU ARE ALLERGIC TO MOLD, don’t come here. The place is full of mold. Lots of people were complaining of coughing in their rooms, losing their voices, etc. Wedding planner didn’t even show up for the rehearsal and they seemed more concerned about setting up a “romantic dinner” in the wedding gazebo during the rehearsal then rushed us out of the area because of the dinner guests were arriving as if that was more important. Concerns were blown off as if anything wasn’t important. Cleaning staff snubbing a generous tip I gave on the 2nd day. I never left another one after that since she acted like it wasn’t enough. The lack of people who fully understood English at guest services was ridiculous. The desk is the only place where staff should have a good command of the language in which most of their guests speak. It gave me such a bad taste for Mexico I’d NEVER return to that country. I’ve noticed that the management responds to these reviews. This is a revised review I’m writing. The first one said they would email me about my concerns. THEY DID NOT. I think they write that to make people believe they are concerned but it’s a lie. They’re obviously not.

We recently Travelled to the resort for New year and I was blown away by the level of customer service it was amazing! My son is only 3 and has very strict dietary needs, in the lead up to us arriving the hotel management team liaised with myself via email and understood and met all the requests we made. We arrived at the hotel quite late at night but was greeted by a wonderful lady called Victoria who became our personal point of call for anything we needed for my son, she was available 24/7 via WhatsApp. She arranged a meet and greet the next morning With the hotel manager and the executive chef who talked us through how all my sons meals would be prepared during our stay and he ensured everyone would be aware so no need to worry when going into the restaurants, they also let me bring my own food into the hotel as they couldn’t provide certain brands etc, they stored and prepared everything as requested to meet our needs. All the staff went above and beyond and was a credit to the hotel I would highly recommend the resort for anyone who has children with complex needs as they provided so much care and attention to detail to ensure we had the most relaxing enjoyable stay possible. We will 100% go back again and look forward to it the hotel did not disappoint at all!

Overall we had a wonderful experience, it had everything we needed for a week, and we would go back. The atmosphere is family friendly and laid-back, not a party scene. *What follows are in-depth about our experience for those who like details. Really all my complaints/suggestions are very minor. 9.5 out of 10 *Warm water, sandy, shallow areas, and lots of room on the beach *It's a huge resort and I'm guessing not close to full, so there was room, food, service, towels, shows, transport, etc for everyone. *The pools are very cold, much colder than the ocean. Hardly anyone was in them. This would be #2 on my improvement list. *Drinks are generally good. Bartender skills/knowledge vary, but they are willing to take directions. They are not full strength at the all-inclusive price, but when you start drinking at 10 in the morning this is not a bad thing. *There is a lot of variety at the buffet, and quality is always okay, occasionally a dish was very good. Labels for food were often missing, wrong, or in the wrong place. If I was to pick my #1 thing for the resort to improve this would be it. Very frustrating not to know what the food is or to have to ask all the time! *Give yourself time to get around. The resort is big, and restaurants may be on the Coba side. There are various shuttles with different routes. A few maps exist with route names/numbers, but don't expect the shuttles to have those names/numbers on them. Ask the drivers. *A la carte restaurants -keep your expectations low: Teppanyaki Japanese, Hindu Thali, and Le Gourmet were good. Tequila Mexican wasn't much different from the buffet Mexican. Maybe it's regional differences, but I enjoy the Mexican restaurants at home, and what I had at the Cancun airport, much more than the resort. *Housekeeping cleanliness was good enough, but we had to ask specifically for some basic things like refilling as the tissue box, doors were not wiped, floors not wiped, and sheets were strangely not covering the foot of the bed. *Some quirks like bathroom light sensors positioned so that they turn off either very quickly (room) or while you're still standing at a pew (lobby); many unlabelled light switches. *Our bathroom was not a room, just slightly separated from the sleeping area. Toilet has its own stall, but the door is glass, and not quite mirrored enough. Ask questions about your room if you're not intimate with your roommates. *The environment feels safe, but use the in-room safe, keep valuables secure, and don't flash wads of cash like a woman in front of me at the pool bar line up with a thick stack of USD. *Shows: We enjoyed the Black Bird Beatles musical, and each of us liked at least parts of the Origen show. The Fiesta Mexicana was a pleasant surprise if you get into the spirit of it. Be prepared for limited food options and long lines. If you are a vegetarian or have other dietary requirements, it might be a plan to eat at the buffet before you go. *Activities: we joined the bike tour a couple of times, with different leaders and it was a different experience. A nice way to get out and around. There seems to be a good variety of things to do but we didn't try anything else. *Staff were almost all lovely and keen. Of course there are always a couple of people who are more bored or dialing it in. Knowing a few words of Spanish helps a lot. Most staff spoke and understood enough English, but sometimes it required talking to someone else. Some strange behaviours like asking us twice whether we wanted coffee but not actually bringing it. *The BP app for information and registration is clunky and incomplete. For example, we registered for our shows, and it showed the location for some but not all. This would be my #3 area for improvement: an orientation, guidebook, information, communication, labels, signage, etc. *The alignment between the resort and the tour agency and the transportation company was not very good. The resort could do more to provide information about available resources on site. *People were generally well behaved, but there are those who smoke in crowds and lines, don’t wash their hands after going to the bathroom, hold up their phones for long periods during shows, go ahead of others who have been waiting to take spots on the shuttles, think that we all want to listen to their music on the beach, etc. The resort could help by establishing, communicating, and gently enforcing norms. *I had been to the BP Grand Akumal several years ago so I knew what to expect. If you just reduce your expectations a tiny bit you will have lots of room to be pleasantly surprised. I would call this 4 star by most standards, not 5. *We had both been to the area before and were looking for a recharge so we didn't feel a need to leave the resort. There are some shops if you want souvenirs, and they seemed to be of good quality, but expect tourist prices.

I would like to preface comments by mentioning that I read many mixed reviews on Tripadvisor regarding the Bahia Principe Grand Tulum. There were many reviews that were not complimentary of the resort and it actually had us quite concerned and wondering if we had booked the right resort for our stay. I had never seen such mixed reviews on Tripadvisor before. Usually, a person can weed out certain reviews in order to get to a place where you feel comfortable either booking your stay or not. Our concerns regarding the resort dissipated upon check in. The following is our review: We found the entrance to the hotel Tulum to be very nice and nicely laid out. Check-in was seamless. We used their app prior to our arrival which helped. We also booked our restaurants through their app prior to our arrival since we had heard that the ala carte restaurants fill up quickly, which they did. We tried to change the time on one of our reservations after our arrival and the restaurants were booked solid so it was good that we made our reservations before arriving at the resort via the app. We were probably in our room 10 minutes after arrival at the hotel . Check-in staff were friendly and efficient. We found the resort to be large, however, if you are in relatively good health, it is easily walkable. We found the food at the buffet to be very good. Good variety. Staff were always on top of things keeping the food trays full. Staff were always friendly and helpful. We ate at four ala carte restaurants: If you stay at Tulum, you can access restaurants that are both at the Tulum and Coba. Which we did. Don Pablo (Tulum) which was very good. It is more of a fine dining experience. Tequila (Tulum) was very good. It is more of upbeat, party atmosphere, buffet style. La Gourmet (Coba), was good. Soup and salad were good, however, the shrimp and tomato based dish was flavorless. Mikado (Coba), was very good, however, we thought that they had to many people around the grill which made for a crowded experience. There are 3 pools at Tulum: The main pool is the party pool with a swim up bar. We spend some time here, however, we spent most of our time at the adult pool, which has a nice music list playing (could turn up the volume) and it is right next to the beach. There is a good combination of beds and loungers. There is no rush to get to the pool to get a lounger or a bed. We found that if we were there by 9:30 a.m. that we had no problem getting loungers. We thought that they could have served a light lunch at the adult pool. Enrique, the bartender, at the adult pool was excellent. Always greeted you with a smile and friendly conversation. We enjoyed some of the entertainment. Some shows you were required to pay for $20.00 US per person. (we didn't attend any of these events so we can't provide comments as to quality of the shows) All the bars made good drinks and the red and white wines were decent. We read some complaints that drinks were watered down and of low quality. That was not our experience. We thought that the quality of alcohol was mid-shelf and good. (if people wanted top shelf they had to pay extra). We thought that was fair. The facility was always clean and the washrooms were regularly attended to. We felt that the hotel took hygiene very seriously during our stay. Check out was seamless. We would definitely return to this resort and recommend it to our friends. P.S. When you arrive at the Cancun, bypass Margaritaville for a Margarita unless you would like to pay $56.00 US per person. We shook our heads and walked away after the fellow told us the cost. Cancun is no longer reasonable as it was a few years back. Wait until you get to your resort. Also, we would suggest booking an authorized taxi or limo service once you arrive in Cancun to take you to our resort. We did not and we had to wait at the bus for an hour until everyone arrived and then it took another 3 1/2 hours to get to our resort. We could have been at our resort 3 hours sooner if we had arranged for our own transportation.
