The location of this place is nice. Just on the beach and close to the "city-center". We had a family room - it was very simple and really needs an update. The pool is nice and the beachchairs are plenty and very comfortable.
The hotel is good but the amount of seaweed on the beach in front of the hotel is huge. Very sorry because it smells and is annoying to swim through.
The atmosphere in the hotel is relaxed, many divers and snorkelers here. Good diving facilities....More
We stayed here for 8 nights, this being our first time in Mexico we didn't know what to expect. We stayed in a small one bedroom apartment with two double beds which was simple but more than adequate. I have to say the maid made...More

Yes, there are many new restrictions. We were there in January, so I don't have current information. If you do a search with the terms snorkeling and Akumal, you will find extensive threads with the information you want.

The best snorkeling is a little west down the beach where you see a red flag. It starts at the Secrets resort beach and stretches west-southwest. It is a very easy short swim out past the sea grass where you can see the sea turtles feeding until the reef begins. It is very extensive and has a great variety of fish and live coral. So far the best snorkeling off the beach we have found in Mexico.
