Detailed Reviews
Our 2-night stay at the Quirpon Lighthouse Inn was a highlight of our trip to Newfoundland. We came here to see whales and they put on quite a show for us one evening. The zodiac ride to the island felt very safe but we did not get good instructions about inflating the life jackets. On the trip to the island we got very wet from the rain but on the trip back, Ed provided large ponchos. The small dock had a very steep ramp. We were met by 2 wonderful ladies, Danielle & Patsy who loaded the luggage into the ATV and expertly guided us over the rocky & wet terrain to the Inn. Patsy & Danielle really made this place so welcoming. They cooked and served the meals, did the housecleaning, and picked up & drove guests to the dock. They generously loaned us some rubber boots, gave us a place to put our wet shoes and allowed us to do a laundry. The Inn has a common living room where we congregated with the other guests. The bedrooms are all upstairs. Our room was very basic with a private bathroom across the hall. The small bedroom window was always fogged up and had a broken pane. The owner of the lighthouse, Ed English, was at the inn and joined us for meals. The meal portions were huge with lots of home-made preserves and bread. It was great to chat with the other guests and hear Ed’s interesting stories but Ed’s constant talking throughout the meals was very distracting. The island was rugged and beautiful with rock outcroppings, peat bogs and lots of wildflowers. There were plenty of bakeapple berries ready for picking. We were fortunate to have a warm, sunny day on the island. It was great to have lots of extra pairs of binoculars available for guests. We went to the whale viewing building which was disappointing. It was made of bare plywood boards; window sills & floor were littered with dead flies and moths. Overall, this was a wonderfully unique experience. We felt that the Inn needs a little loving maintenance. Much of the red paint on the stairs and front door is peeling badly and many windows throughout the Inn have cracked panes. It would be helpful if there were written instructions for guests as many people did not hear the times given for meals or the fact that the water in the tap is not to be used for drinking. Fresh water is available in the kitchen to replenish water bottles.

If you are looking for a place to unwind, get away from the cell phone, and just relax. This is it. From the moment we arrived, Ed made us feel very welcome. We, and the other 8 folks, all did the hike from Grandma's cove to the lighthouse. Spectacular views. When we arrived the ladies in the main house introduced them selves and said dinner would be at 7 and told us what room we were in. Our room was in the other house and our luggage was sitting there waiting for us. I can't say enough about the ladies and Richard. They are very kind and really want to make sure they take care of you. The room we were in was great. Yea the windows don't open but that's ok the wind would cause havoc. Ed gave my wife and I pointers on places to explore and it was awesome. The food was good, the weather was great except for one afternoon of rain but we sat and watched whales in the cove so it didn't matter. Also, maybe it was luck, Ed took us out for a zodiac tour and the amount of whales and dolphins we saw were great. Even had a whale breech right next to us. If you need a good getaway this is it. Be sure to do research, we followed others advise and had items for all 4 seasons, including rain gear and it worked great. I would go back to this place any day and stay. I just love it!

If you want to do more than say you were there, one night stay is not enough. We were there 4 days and you set your own pace, whether hiking the trails, watching for whales and icebergs or just sitting reading and listening to the surroundings. Rooms are small but comfortable. The staff are friendly and I was amazed that they accommodated vegetarian, glucose intolerant and lactose diet needs. We did bring peanut butter crackers and some cookies to keep us until meals. Everyone should bring at least a good rain jacket for the trip to and from the island since you will need it. Only slippers or socks worn inside the inn. We were there in August and a fleece jacket was perfect. Because of the winds every day is a bad hair day and I took full advantage of scarves and hair bands. Baseball caps will fly off! We will plan on returning in June because of more chance of icebergs and whale sightings

Better communication and knowing what to expect would have made this trip more pleasant for us…
We arrived at the dock around 3:30pm ready for our boat transfer to the island at 4pm. The boat was quite small (and there were 10 guests total on our visit) which is why you’re limited on bag size. On the journey over we got to decide whether we wanted to be dropped at the south end of the island and hike the 5.5km to the lighthouse, or take the boat all the way there. Three of us opted for the hike - which I highly recommend as the island is simply beautiful with great terrain! The route itself isn’t that well sign posted though, so keep yourself orientated.
When we arrived at the house almost 2 hours later, we removed our shoes (there’s signs saying no outdoor shoes allowed inside) collected our bags which were already on the front porch and let ourselves in. The main house itself is quite small, with one sitting room (about 8 seats) and one communal dining table which seats 10 people.
At this point it should be explained that as the new arrivals you are the “new group” and that the group of people already there from the previous night are the “old group”. The old group will dine at 6pm and the new group at 7pm. After locating a staff member and being shown to our room we headed back down to the sitting room with our own group to wait for our allocated dinner time. There’s no options with food, you are all served exactly the same plate and portion size. As for drinks you help yourself to items from the fridge and write down in a book what you had and pay after breakfast on the day you leave (either cash or card). As an FYI a bottle of wine is $35 and choices of beverages are slim.
The next morning breakfast is served to the old group at 7:45am and the new group at 8:30am. Once the old group leaves the island you then become the old group and a new group will arrive that afternoon - and so on it repeats!
The bedrooms are very practical and therefore both small and basic. What I will advise is that you bring some form of entertainment with you. There’s no tv, wifi or service on the island. So if the weather is bad (which for us it was) and you’re unable to see to hike or whale/iceberg watch it’s really quite dull. Our zodiac boat tour was also cancelled with no notice given.
I guess a place like this is what you make of it… but unfortunately a large part of that relies on what the weather is that day!

Absolutely fantastic from the moment we got onto the Z boat to go to the island to the moment we returned to the dock 2 days later. During our stay we had seen icebergs, whales on the hour pretty much every hour and enjoyed some walks over the spectacular island itself. Our room was in the small lodge a few yards from the lighthouse itself, although basic it was fine. The excellent meals were taken in the main building and served by some very friendly, helpful staff. The whole exercise is overseen by Ed, Z boat pilot extraordinary and full of stories and history - a quite amazing bloke. I should mention, we had three days of great weather ! Would we visit again ? Without a moments hesitation. A magical place,

We traveled to Quirpon Island in mid-June, 2023 for two nights. Our experience was not as good as some of the other reviewers. It was very cold, a high of 36 Fahrenheit, the sea was rough and the wind gusts were over 30 mph. It was too late to cancel the reservation and we actually though that the owner would cancel due to sea conditions. Taking the Zodiac boat to the island was a rough go as the waves were high and it was scary; it was not fun and adventuresome as expected when we booked our stay. We took a hit from a large wave as Ed maneuvered the boat toward the dock and all of us in the boat got soaked (head to toe), along with our luggage and shoes. I didn’t stop trembling from the wet and cold until the next morning. The staff at the inn were gracious enough to wash and dry our clothes. We didn’t do any hiking on the island as it was so cold outside and the ground/rocks were wet and slippery. The staff in the kitchen were great. The food was good and reminiscent of visiting grandma’s house. We had a Zodiac iceberg/whale tour scheduled the second day but the seas remained rough. I was disappointed that Ed did not refund our money for the boat tour.

The lighthouse is in a wonderful, isolated location. You can see iceburgs and whales from the shore. A couple of things to keep in mind - there are no washrooms where you catch the zodiac to the island and there is no washroom by the landing on the island. It is a fairly long, steep walk to the house if you do not get a ride on the side by side. Also, there is a yacht ladder to get in and out of the zodiac on the island but you may have to ask them to put it in. It can be a fair drop to the zodiac at low tide. Accommodation - all rooms have their own bathroom but not all are ensuite. Some bathrooms are across the hall.

The zodiac ride out to the inn was fabulous. The location is spectacular. We sat in the room on the cliffs to watch for whales but didn’t see any. Then the sea mist rolled in. It was great. The whale watching room needs some tlc though because it was quite musty smelling and quite dirty.
Our host Ed was lovely and the 3 house keepers were gorgeous.
There was no ladder from the zodiac to the wharf because it was blown away but it should be replaced by next season.
We were the only two on the Island as it was very close to end of season but still had a nice time. The bed was very comfortable and showers were great too. The rooms were very clean and the sitting room very comfortable. The food prepared was home style cooking and delicious. The partridge berry pie was excellent and the jams (bake apple, partridge berry and strawberry) for breakfast were yummy.

A great experience. We stayed two nights and took advantage of all the hikes around the island and hours of whale watching. All meals are provided and delicious and served to all guests together so you get to know other inn guests. The staff are super friendly and can’t do enough for you. The zodiac boat ride to and from the island was enjoyable (even if we did get a little wet from spray). Accommodations weren’t fancy but comfortable and clean.

We simply contacted Linkum, explained our timeline, what we liked, and how much we wanted to drive. Linkum put together a tour that was 5 star. I can't imagine what we could have added or done differently. My only suggestion for future travelers: check your itinerary closely, there are ferries to catch!

Thanks for your question. There are two options. We have a secure building on the dock where you can store the rest of your luggage if you wish. OR the rest of your luggage will be safe if chosen to be locked within your vehicle. The community area is quite small and very safe.
No that is extra. They were all helpful on the phone about kayaking but when I got there they didn't try to accommodate. They offered zodiac tours for an extra fee
We had a rental car when
we were there. I would contact the Inn to see what they suggest.
Home cooking - we had fried cod, potatoes, simple veggies for dinner. Breakfast was a baked egg dish with cheese.
