Our first visit to The Swag was in 2007, where we actually happened on this hidden gem outside Waynesville, NC. We have visited several times over the years for either the gourmet Picnic Lunch or multi-night stays for a peaceful mountain getaway. While this visit was for a Picnic lunch, we are also anxious to see the improvements under The Swag's new ownership. Would it still have that magical charm? Wow! There have been many changes and each adds an amazing new aspect to this still charming rustic mountain retreat. Now there is a Welcome area to get guests acquainted with The Swag. Areas we saw the biggest improvements were the new huge porch outside the dining area of the Lodge offering more spectacular mountains views. There is now a nice relaxing bar adjacent to the dining room. A downstairs is a fantastic area for enjoying a variety of wines. The new Spa is ready to relieve any stress. Additionally, many of the outdoor furnishings have been updated with new hammocks, swings, and the garden is even bigger than before. The charm remains and the staff is friendly, accommodating, and welcoming. The improvements add elegantly to this amazing mountain retreat. The Swag continues to be a “hidden gem” and one of the most romantic and unique mountain retreats. The changes add both the charm and luxury of this amazing hideaway. We look forward to a return visit!

The Swag is a magical resort. You feel like a member of the extended family when you check in. There is a great balance of being able to socialize with other guests during the hikes and happy hour, and also plenty of privacy as well. There are less than twenty rooms so it’s calm and intimate. The surroundings are absolutely breathtaking. Book early because we were only able to get the smallest room in the main house a few months out, but it was still lovely and comfortable. The food (all- inclusive) is also plentiful and quite good. A fun treat is the choice to have your lunch packed in a backpack for hikes each day. The Swag is a wonderful escape from everyday life!

We were the SWAG for a four night stay last week. Our second trip, the first a two night, Autumn before last. What a great trip!We made the big 8.5 mile loop trail hike, enjoyed a continuous supply of gourmet food, relaxed in a beautiful peaceful forest environment. Enjoyed the superb Sunday Brunch Staff were all excellent, could not have been more attentive. Lost water pressure Friday for 12 hours, the SWAG Staff handled this with no adverse affects. Definitely plan to go back.

My husband and I returned to The Swag for our second visit during a wine event hosted by Provision Market in Fairhope, Alabama. Upon arrival we were delighted by our large, updated room with a fireplace, massive copper tub, and outdoor shower. (I have to say that showering while gazing out at the mountains felt like the ultimate luxury!) We brought our infant with us and there was more than enough space for our pack and play, and the small fridge and wet bar provided a great place for fixing her bottles. The updates to the property are so well done. I could have spent my entire visit on the new porch off the dining room enjoying the fire and watching hummingbirds. The dinners were outstanding; I think the Chef really outdid herself during this particular wine event as she focused on pairing the food with the wines in a set menu. I highly recommend the hike to the Science Learning Center. It is an easy to moderate 5ish mile hike with great views, a historical cabin, and a perfect place to stop and enjoy the provided picnic lunch at the Learning Center. I would also recommend visiting the new spa, as the deep tissue massage was one of the best I have ever had. We are still trying to recreate the Walk in the Woods cocktail at home, so grab one of those from the bar for us! One thing we love about The Swag is that while it is a luxury property with excellent service, it does not seem to take itself too seriously. Many of our servers were jovial and fun. The general manager and housekeeping alike were warm and conversational. We have been lucky enough to have both of our stays while the owners were on property and they were a delight. My only regret from this trip is that we did not have one more night (well, and that my massage was only 60 minutes)! We look forward to going back.
