A while ago I use to travel to Raleigh on at least a yearly basis, sometime more often. The first time there, I asked a local resident about a good place to eat and they recommended the restaurant at the Velvet Cloak. Although I did not stay at the hotel, I have eaten there at least four times on trips... More

I stayed at the Velvet Cloak for 3 months, and it was ideal for an extended stay. It is close to town, shopping, and NC State University. The hotel is old, and in need of some repairs, but it has so much more character than most hotels that I have stayed in. The staff are helpful. It would have been... More

I recently completed a long-term stay of 15 months at The Velvet Cloak Inn. These reviews are always subjective, but in my opinion, you absolutely cannot beat the location and value. The hotel is a stone's throw from the core of downtown Raleigh and is only a few blocks from the campus of NC State. Has the place seen better... More

When I first arrived I thought that my stay would last no longer than 1 to 3 months, however, my stay lasted 12 months. During my stay the staff was very helpful and the location made it easy for me to get to work within 5 minutes and I was able to workout at the YMCA next door. Additionally, the... More

The Velvet Cloak Inn has so much potential as it sits in a prime location of downtown Raleigh. Having lived in Raleigh for quite some time, I knew that the place would not measure up to its historical reverence, but the price is the most affordable for an extended stay in the area. With a face lift, an interior decorator,... More

This was so disappointing. What could have been a charming, old world hotel, was actually run-down, dirty, and spooky with its cobwebs and rusting stairs. And that wasn't the worst! I have never had a hotel manager be so rude. I was meant to stay here for 1 month long-stay on business. I payed a cancellation after only a week... More

This is not a bad hotel. It's just old and very much out of date. It rates a little higher just because of its location. 25 to 30 years ago this was the nicest place in town. Now, it's really not even quite average for this area. The room was much more what you would expect from a Motel 6.... More

We are over on vacation from the UK and decided to give this place a go rather than the usual hotel chains. From the street it looks like a planation type building with wrought iron balconies. It is what I would call a motel or motor lodge. We paid $79 per night and for that we got a large clean,... More

The hotel is run down, spider webs everywhere!! Seems like an abandoned scary place! Carpet was very dirty. It looks like people were living there. Do not recommend it! We left and stayed somewhere else!!!

I stayed at the Velvet Cloak because it's pet friendly and because of the location, (as others pointed out, right next to the YMCA, walking distance to Cameron Village, and some great restaurants). I had a remodel extended stay room with hardwood floors and kitchenette, and was quite comfortable. Enjoyed the covered parking. You need to expect an older building... More
