Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We would tell you to ignore the negative reviews. This is a very basic campground with no camp office, store or specific place to check-in. There is a gate (unlocked) with a sign asking campers with reservations to call/text the host upon arrival. The gate is squeaky when moved to enter/leave, meaning no one can sneak in. Many of the sites offer some privacy from their neighbors and a few do not. The campground has minimal lighting allowing good night skies. The bathhouse feels neglected and not maintained but at least the showers have great water pressure. The paths into the woods are well marked and easy walking. The hurricane in 2018 took down a terrible amount of trees and destroyed safe access to the beach which is down a cliff edge. The park is clearly lacking the resources to repair the damage and thus the beach is closed. Skip this park if you won't understand this or if it's too basic a campground. The host family at the gate kept to themselves and the other host was a helpful resource when asked.

I've never camped for so little! The campground has the basics, level sites, hot showers, mostly clean bathrooms. (NC has a lot of bugs, so I don't judge them too much!) good beach on the Neuse river. 30 mins from Atlantic Beach, 10 mins from cherry point.

Camped here for four nights with another family. The campground was clean and well maintained. The hosts were friendly and helpful. The sites provided privacy and were quiet, while giving plenty of space. The hiking trails around the campground where nice and easily accessible. The campground is located off Hwy 70 between New Bern and Havelock. There are many attractions and activities within a 45 minute drive, we enjoyed swimming and fishing in the Neuse River (very shallow), seeing Fort Macon, visiting the NC Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores, some time at the beach, and Beaofort. Overall, a nice campground for a reasonable rate.

Forty six states, 200+ campgrounds and counting… this remains my favorite campground. This clean, quiet campground is a gem in the Croatan Forest. Walking/hiking trails are right out the back of most sites. It’s safe, well maintained, and gorgeous! Jackie (Host) and her family are friendly and knowledgeable. Clean, modern restrooms with hot showers. Dump & potable water fill site. Highly recommend reservations on the weekends, especially if you want an electric site. This a nature lover’s paradise!🌲🥾🦌🎒🌳🐾🐿🐢🦅

Quiet and relaxing campground. Our campsite (24) didn’t have much privacy but it wasn’t a big deal. Hosts were friendly and their daughter delivered our firewood by bicycle. Had a little bit of trouble finding our campsite but that was because it was pouring down rain and dark when we arrived. The beach was closed due to storm damage (no fault of the campground) but looks like a beautiful place to spend time. Would definitely recommend and return!

Seems the host left the campsite area before noon and closed the gate. No one could drive in or out. Two hours later and still no host to open the gate. There seems to be an abundance of rules for things you can't do. The beach/river access has been closed for some time with no signs of reopening any time soon. Numerous complaints about the host family stalking guests. Most of the public restrooms were locked. Greatly disappointed in the way this facility has changed.

Worst experience we have ever had at a campground. We stayed at site 7. The park itself was small, quaint and cozy. Water isn't offered and none of the drinking fountains work. However these are easy things to get by on.

The host at this site was what make it horrendous and ruined the whole weekend. She was wretched and a bully. We booked Saturday and we were constantly berated by the host for minuscule reasons. She yelled at us and immediately and got an aggressive attitude because one of us was drinking a beer in a covered holder while enjoying the camp fire. We weren't loud by any means. We were in bed on our own accord by 930pm. We're grown adults and we were not doing anything wrong. I understand alcohol is stated that it isn't allowed. However, if you're being an adult and not acting a fool most places look this over. They're weren't any kids around us. We were very secluded. After this incident she literally stalked us. We walked down by the water at 630pm and she berated us for being down there when it closed at 6. Come on lady. We were just looking around. Meanwhile she was down there walking her dog. She made it very clear at that point that she had warned us twice and if we did anything else she would call law enforcement on us. We were flabbergasted. What had we done to make this lady so mad at us? None of us knew. She shouted at us, was extremely aggressive, and even made a point to tell us her husband was inside the trailer and to not make him have to come out. I am a United States Marine who has been on multiple combat deployments, I do not take threats like these very well. Nonetheless I walked away, called my wife, and she assured me she would contact a manger in the morning. She ruined the trip.

We over herd her yelling at other campers too very early in the morning. It was unnerving. I've been camping for over 20 years. We camped for our wedding for Pete's sake! I have never experienced a host camper like this in my life. This lady needs to be on medication. I wouldn't feel safe with my children around her.

My wife and I always stay in the state parks and national parks. However in this case skip this and stay at the local KOA. We will never be back here again. It was such a nightmare.

The unhappy angry hosts are Jacqueline & I guess her husband. We paid for our 14 days. Out of the blue, 4 days before we were to leave, the husband comes over and is yelling for me to come outside, and insists I have leave immediately, with Jacqueline on speaker phone, both in an agitated state. Mind you, I've had no interaction with these people since check-in, so their agitation was completely unjustified. I had to call the District Ranger to get them to backoff. Luckily I did my reservation online, so had proof of my check-in date. I even sent that to Jacqueline, but proof of the facts didn’t phase her.

I thought since it was a location on recreation.gov that it would be a decent place & well maintained, was disappointing for sure.
The bathrooms were dirty, dingy, with stopped up toilets, with poor grammar on the signage (Yes, that matters!). The location for running water in the campground wasn't working either, so in order to wash our dishes we had to get water from the bathroom sink.
The entrance to the campground isn't very clear with weather or not check-in is required, however at one point the host did come by to verify that we had a reservation (though I'm not sure why, since we were the only people camping on the stretch of 12 or 14 sites along the side of the loop we were on.)
The Neuse River right down from the campground was very dirty & felt like bathwater, so no swimming for us! The beach was pretty, but since it was attached to an all access portion of the park, it was a bit more crowded than we would have liked.
Overall, not worth the $21 we paid to camp there, we should have held out & just gone on over to Ocracoke and the NPS campground, as those facilities were 100% better than the ones at this spot.

3rd visit in 3 years, the recreation, trails & beach...awesome!!! The two, yes, two, "campground hosts" were the laziest, non productive hosts I have ever met in 4 years of camping. Be ready to clean up your own site from previous campers, (fire ring, left over trash, replenising toilet paper in bath etc.) expect NO assitance whatsoever from these two sorry excuses for host!!!
