Clean room. Problems: ice machine in building not working, refrigerator not cold enough freeze water and it leaks on the floor, soap and shampoo dispensers do not work, tv does not work. Called several times and NO response from maintenance. Do downsize your expectations with this place!
We stayed at Sea Gull Motel in Hatteras, NC in mid-September 2020 and enjoyed being steps away from the beach in a pet-friendly accommodation. While the amenities and style of the motel are basic, housekeeping and grounds maintenance were very good. Our room (#100) was large, with updated flooring and a comfortable king-size bed. The kitchenette was very versatile with a small stove/oven and an almost full-size refrigerator. The bathroom was huge and also had updated flooring.
I mean, I wanted to love this spot. Really not much availability in the summer in the OBX, but this spot had pet-friendly rooms. Turns out there was of course a reason for that. I think the maintenance issues and failure to respond - or willingness to outright lie - is just not acceptable. So, check-in is the first struggle. They talk a big game about sending check-in info and codes 24 hrs before check-in (bolded and in red in the booking email), yet they didn't do so. I had to call and wait on hold for over an hour to get them to give me the codes and send the welcome email. From there, you're pretty much on your own. You check in and if you have issues, you call their after-hours service (maintenance only there until about 4 apparently, which is when check-in is - shock). So the rooms are pretty spacious, with a small table, desk, bed, separate bath and sink area, and a small kitchenette. The tile floor was a bit frustrating as there was always sand on the floor, but they did provide a broom. The big perk here was the beach, directly over the dune next to the hotel. A few key issues concerned me here. One, I received an email from the hotel saying that due to coronavirus concerns and requirements, the pool would be closed. The pool was not closed, and was in regular use by groups of people and kids throughout my stay. My big issue was that the toilet was left dirty and water to it turned off. I tried to turn the water back on and it dripped water from the wall onto the floor in a pretty good stream. I called the office and got their after hours call service and was promised a call-back. I got one a good hour or so later, by which time I had used every towel I had to mop up the floor. The supervisor I spoke with, Kim, told me that housekeeping was coming to clean the toilet - and didn't seem to have gotten the message. I told her again what the issue was, and in the meantime the housekeeping had been in my room. Kim told me that they had put a small bucket under the pipe to collect the water, had left extra towels, and that Kim would be by first thing the next morning - and a plumber called if she couldn't fix it. No extra towels were left when I returned to the room. I ended up having to use my own. Kim never came by the next few days and it was never fixed. I was left with a small bucket that I had to empty every few hours so it didn't overflow and flood the bathroom. Had to mop up the floor every morning because it would overflow while I slept, and make sure I emptied it every few hours during the day. Pretty frustrating, particularly being lied to straight out. Flies were also a big issue, which seemed common as they had a swatter in the room. Would definitely never stay here again.…
Let me describe the room and you draw your own opinion. First, smoking is allowed in the rooms and the room smelled like smoke. That might not bother a lot of people but it should be disclosed. Unfortunately my reservations were two weeks after Hurricane Dorian and when I called to cancel b/c of the storm, the operators told me the reservation could not be cancelled and the room was fully operational. When we arrived, there were electric fans in the room circulating the damp air, plus bags (?) that hung on the coat hangers that collected water from the air (the bags were full) and then a strong nauseatingly sweet odor of air freshener poured forth from the wall AC unit. The carpet was largely dry but could still feel the dampness. Whereas I could see mattresses etc strewn up and down all the streets, that was not the case for this motel. I believe this motel just put a few extra linen covers over the mattress and continued to rent rooms without any attempt to mitigate the damage done by the storm. The TV didn't work but that was okay ... I could manage that. I found this stay the worst night of a 21 day vacation.…
Short walk to the beach. Feels like you have the beach to yourself. Did not like the tile floor but everything was great. Bed was comfy and didnt have any issues. Overall I recommend this place for a short stay.
