This hotel has great potential. Spacious rooms ... Every one is very friendly. But it’s fallen into poor maintenance and needs an upgrade. The website claims there’s a shuttle into town/Duke campus, we booked here. But there isn’t one and hasn’t been one since “…October, early November.” It’s not acceptable for the hotel to leave this false information up on the website.

WARNING DO NOT STAY AT THIS HOTEL THEY WILL TAKE YOUR MONEY and GHOST YOU WHEN YOU HAVE AN ISSUE Visiting Durham for Duke Medical Center Visit. We reserved online per the suggestion made by the front desk at the hotel. When we arrived to check in after a very long day, we were informed by the front desk clerk that we would have to pay a $100.00 security deposit in case of damages and that it could take up to two weeks to have the deposit returned. It is important to note that we have stayed at this hotel two other times due to medical appointments at Duke and have never had to pay a deposit. Although the hotel was not perfect meaning the room could have been cleaner, and the hotel desperately needs renovations and deep cleaning. It was close enough to the hospital and cheap enough to tolerant due being on a very tight budget. The security deposit was not disclosed online and when this was mentioned to the clerk, he just pointed to a SIGN HIDDEN BEHIND A PLANT ON THE HOTELS CHECK IN COUNTER. He was rude and acted like he did not care or even try to assist us. He just wanted the money for the deposit acting like he wanted to get back to scrolling through his phone. Reservation Counter Online Customer Service was not any help even when we requested a refund and were denied. We ended up driving home after a 12-hour day because we refused to pay a fee that was not disclosed. We ended up being charged for a room that we did not even stay in. When attempting to contact the manager the next day. We were literally ghosted. Multiple messages were left. We have not received one return call to us. Reservation Couter has also not been any help and suggest that it is up to the manager who is invisible. I went in and read some of the other reviews regarding this hotel after our issue and wish I had read them before. I recommend that you read ALL the reviews for this hotel!!!!!!!!! It was definitely eye opening for us.

Charged an extra facility fee - a few days after we left, beyond our prepaid reservation. Limited restaurant, breakfast offered was only continental - no hot meals. Bar area was closed. When seeking maps of the area, there was nothing available at the hotel. Stay was originally planned for 4 days, when we tried to cut short our stay by 1 day, hotel refused to refund any of prepaid amount. Would recommend an alternate hotel.

Debraw654, it is regrettable that your experience didn't align with expectations. Our added facility fees are typically informed upfront, we're unsure as to why you were caught by surprise. Concerning the breakfast, at times we do offer a lighter fare, we hope to expand our options in the future. As for our bar area, closures might occur due to routine maintenance or other unforeseen circumstances. The lack of area maps is unusual; we usually are equipped with local guide resources, so we'll look into this situation. Your comments about modifying your stay duration are noted; our cancellation policy is designed to accommodate as many guests as possible. We truly value your feedback and hope if given another opportunity, we will be able to exceed your expectations.

This is a hotel that charges surprise fees. When I returned my card keys to the front desk, I was told the booking agent would send me a receipt. However, after checking out, the Millennium Hotel Durham charged my credit card an additional $34.06. When I called to inquire about this charge, I was told it was a "facilities fee." Should that be Surprise!! or Got You!! fee? Needless to say this was my first and last stay at any Millennium Hotel. This hotel is certainly not nice enough to forgive a surprise, annoyance fee.

We appreciate the feedback, Marvin. We're disappointed your time with us was less than ideal. It's unfortunate you didn't notice all fees associated with your booking. Our facilities fee allows us to offer additional amenities for all of our guests. The information regarding our facilities fee is readily available on our website. We do hope you give us another opportunity to share a more positive experience with you soon.

I have an elderly parent in poor health in Durham and have spent a few dozen nights at the Millennium in the past year or so. As that indicates, I am satisfied enough to come back. Why? The location is great and it is dirt cheap. Still, the impression I have is that 30 or 40 years ago the Millennium was the nicest place in town or close to it, before going into an long period of deep decline. Recently, they've done enough remodeling to bring it up to the level of tolerable--probably comparable to a typical Doubletree. The rooms are spacious, the beds are fine and the showers are OK. Still, something is definitely off. It gives the impression of being down-at-the-heels: stained carpet, banged-up furniture, etc. One trivial thing that is a sign of further problems is that behind the front desk there are four clocks on the wall, showing the local time in Durham, Los Angeles, London and Singapore. I have NEVER arrived there when all four clocks showed the correct respective times. On my most recent visit, it even had the wrong time for Durham! So why have the clocks at all? My advice to prospective guests would be to stay there, but don't expect much. My advice to the owners of the hotel would be to shut it down for a year, do a complete top-to-bottom renovation, and then reopen it with a new name and new staff.

768davidk, it's apparent from your review that you're a frequent visitor at our hotel due to the convenient location and affordability. We value your repeated trust in us at Millennium Hotel Durham. It's encouraging to hear that the spacious rooms and comfortable beds meet your needs. We regret to hear that certain aspects of the hotel didn't measure up to your expectations. Embracing our history while meeting modern conveniences is a careful balance, and it's clear there are areas we need to review. We appreciate your observations about the state of the carpets and furniture, as well as the accuracy of our wall clocks at the front desk. We take your feedback very seriously and we're eager to improve the features that left a less-than-perfect impression. Even though we may not be closing down to renovate anytime soon, effective steps for enhancing the ambiance and functionality of the hotel are surely on our agenda. Additionally, our dedicated team is continually trained to meet and exceed guest expectations. Please know that your advice and feedback will serve as a guide and motivation for our improvement. Thank you for staying with us and for taking the time to provide your valuable insights. We hope to have the opportunity to provide you with a better experience in the future.

Family members and I stayed at the Millenium when visiting Duke for Family Weekend. We ended up here because virtually all other hotel options were fully booked. Given that situation, it's hard to complain too much. The Millenium is a cut above a Motel 6 but not by much, and It's certainly not a full service hotel. What's OK: 1. Close to Duke University Medical Center; main parts of the Duke campus are farther away. 2. Spacious rooms with reasonably comfortable beds and decent wi-fi. Adequate electrical outlets for charging devices. 3. Friendly staff, though the front desk always seemed understaffed. What's subpar: 1. A cafe offers breakfast (which we didn't try) but no other meals. A bar/lounge seemed to be inconsistently open. 2. The lobby looks attractive but other public spaces including the hallways and elevators are old and need refurbishing. 3. Our bathroom included shampoo, conditioner, and lotion...but no soap. The bathtub/shower had permanent stains/chips everywhere. 4. The fitness room barely qualifies as such. Two treadmills and a stair stepper are it. No ellipticals or bikes. Most importantly, at almost $300/night (with taxes), the Millenium offers very poor value. We wouldn't return unless no other options were available.

Philip, thank you for sharing your detailed assessment. It's nice to hear that you found our rooms spacious and team members welcoming, although it's disheartening that not every aspect met your expectations. We understand that the fitness facility and other public areas didn't impress you as much. We're working to assess your valuable feedback and make possible improvements. For future stays, our team members are always ready to solve any concerns such as the omission of soaps to ensure a more comfortable experience. We understand the value of providing a satisfactory service for the price paid, and it's unfortunate that you felt otherwise. We hope for another opportunity to provide you with an experience that matches your expectation and our standards.

This hotel was booked for me as I was speaking at an event at Duke University and it was close to the college. This is a really bad hotel, not even a three star it’s like a motel. The carpet is lifting up, there are stains on the wall, the linens are dirty - the works. I immediately checked out after getting to my room. It is in need of a serious renovation.

Woke up to someone trying to get into the room. Thankfully I put on the security lock on the door. Went and told front desk. They didn’t seem very concerned about it. I think someone was trying to get in our room while we were out that night and then try to get in again in the morning. Didn’t notice the door until the morning when they try to get in. Definitely very sketchy.

The hotel has gone downhill since my last stay here several years ago. The ice machine on the second floor was turned off. The woman at the Front Desk seemed to imply that all had been turned off No microwave. "I have only been here a month but there have been many changes. The hotel charged $100 when checking in for "incidentals." When asked how long before the my account was credited, I was told that it depends on your bank. The complimentary breakfast is gone. What is offered is minimal at best and not worth the $10 charge. There was no tea or non-caffeinated coffee. There is a large dining room and bar but they were never open. The carpet was badly stained. There were 3 pillows on a king size bed. The phone in the room did not work as well as the remote for the TV. I called the hotel several days later to find out if I had forgotten something in the room. Neither the Front Desk or Lost and Found answered; the prompt said to leave a voice mail. I did. I will report if I ever get a call. The hotel is across the street from Duke neurology and it is cheap. There is nothing else to recommend it.

Oliver, we regret to hear that your recent stay didn't live up to your previous experience with us. Although changes have been made in recent times for the overall improvement, it's unfortunate they didn't appeal to you as anticipated. Your feedback regarding amenities such as the ice machine, in-room facilities, and breakfast offerings is extremely valuable. We apologize for any inconvenience concerning the deposit for incidentals and the clarity around the ramification. It's also disappointing to hear about your challenges with the in-room entertainment and phone - rest assured, your comments are being shared with the relevant departments. Lastly, we recognise the importance of prompt and efficient lost and found service. We are sorry that you didn’t get the timely response you expected. STAY AWAY ! A Reservation Does Not Guarantee A Room at this Hotel! My family arrived on Saturday night, October 14, after the UNC v Miami football game only to be turned away because the hotel was overbooked. I made our reservation through the hotel’s own website weeks before our stay. The hotel staff did not life a finger to help us find another hotel room or anything. Sorry doesn’t cut it when you have a reservation confirmation number. Multiple others with reservations were turned away while we were there. We had to travel 3 hours home after midnight. With all the football games and the state fair, there were no hotel rooms to be found in reasonable distance. I left multiple calls for the hotel manager all of which were never returned. Horrendous customer service.
