What an absolutely fantastic place! Did a lovely hike up to the Cannibal Cave with our guide Mike showing us all the different flowers. The food was amazing, we really enjoyed our stay at the Cavern and we will definitely be back.

Had the most wonderful impromptu one night stay here. Spa treatment was awesome. Dinner was an absolute treat and the whole experience was extremely restful! Although not a boutique resort, one certainly is made to feel at home and there is something for everyone. Is a great family resort but thanks to the creative layout of the facilities, couples can...

Very disappointing, the only place in South Africa we weren't offered a welcome drink on arrival. It was a bit like I imagine Center Parcs to be, lots to do for children an quite interesting if you like hiking, but not for retirees. The room was dull and dingy, with no bathroom amenities. The food was adequate and the staff a bit...

Dear Chris. We see that you also stayed at the 5 star Oyster Box (their cheapest room is R3100 per night bed and breakfast) and Leopard Hills (their cheapest stay is R13 800 per person per night) before staying at our hotel. I am flattered that you then chose to stay at The Cavern. Our most expensive room is R1670...

Standard rooms are nothing fancy, but are clean, comfortable and recommendable. The food and service is unbeatable with an interesting little pub and wine cellar below. The only thing that needs a little maintenance are the nature trails that are showing signs of neglect. We're convinced that we heard a low leopard-type growl up near the grotto ! Eish !

Dear 957tripper Thank you for your lovely review. The upkeep of the paths is a mammoth task but our guides have worked hard to clear where necessary and add logs to help with erosion. It is an ongoing operation and after all our lovely rain the grasses are growing incredibly fast! We are always wondering about the elusive leopard.... must...

My wife and I spent 3 nights at this resort last week. We had booked a Superior room and expected to have a relaxing stay. Unbeknown to us there were unit renovations being carried out in our section of the resort resulting in us being greeted by the sounds of a grinder being operated and hammer and chisel being used...

Dear Martin Thank you for taking the time to write and be in touch. As I have explained in an earlier email to you I am sorry that you have not had a relaxing holiday and can only apologise for this situation. Each year we refurbish approximately 10 rooms and have been upgrading all the bathrooms at The Cavern. During...

Our room was nice - the bathroom a bit small though. There was only a tiny strip of under carpet heating so we found our room very cold (in the middle of summer!). There should be more heating available. The staff were excellent. The food? Plenty of it but the quality wasnt good - over cooked lamb chops, duck under...

Dear Lillian Thank you for your review. Sorry that it rained but we do need the rain after the worst drought in 100 years. Its good for our farmers and good for the country. You are probably correct - we are not the Resort for an unstable person in their 80's who finds it difficult to walk. I am afraid...

The Cavern Resort is in an absolutely stunning situation. The hotel is best suited for the 40+ age group as it is somewhat old fashioned. Food is good and the superior suites are beautiful. Activities are varied and well organised. Staff are excellent. The best bit was the staff choir who were quite brilliant. On the negative side, it was...

Dear Twickenham_12 It is lovely that you enjoyed so many aspects of the Cavern. The resort has provided holidays to young and old for more than 75 years and we welcome many families who really do cherish what the outdoors has to offer. Holiday seasons are filled with the pitter-patter of little feet and midweeks, out of season, can be...

We arrived after a very wet drive down from Pretoria and it then rained for the next 60-odd hours without let up (which is apparently very unusual) and I still think the Cavern is a great place and offers great value! We stayed on a three night package which took the price down to around ZAR1000 p.p.p.n. and included a...

Dear Paul It is just lovely reading your very comprehensive review of the Cavern. We have had an incredibly wet February but are so grateful after a terrible drought last year. The rivers are full and after each down-pour little waterfalls appear along Surprise Ridge. This inclement weather does mean the holiday happens mostly indoors but we are lucky to...
