We had a charming room in Chalet St Jean which is situated just behind the main building, it had a balcony with a table and chairs with a view towards the Aubrac. It was clean and provided everything that was required for a short stay. The restaurant was excellent, with a good variety of dishes and menus for a short stay. We had their speciality, trout en croute, which needs to be ordered in advance and was well worth it.

We love the pastoral unspoilt countryside around Pailherols. We have returned to the Auberge multiple times over probably more than 20 years and it has become our favourite place for celebrating special occasions. We have watched the operation grow from being a small auberge with a few rooms up to now where it is now having a Pool, Spa and considerable extra accomodation. Local property has been purchased, to accomplish the expension; renovation has been to exceedingly high standards everywhere High quality furnishings and tasteful decor prevail throughout, no money has been spared. Staffing is headed up by several actively involved family members; all are extremely pleasant and efficient. The main restaurant has an intimate atmosphere and the food is of very high quality and standard of presentation. We always look forward to the "Truffarde" - potato mash with the local young Cantal Cheese and onions, served to accompany the main meal dishes. We have enjoyed the eating experience at the Clos de Gentianes annexe. Althought the choice was somewhat limited, the quality and presentation was excellent. We like to stay at the Clos, and take a large ground floor room with access to a small private patio/garden area. We find this quiet and peaceful. From the Clos there are good views out over the small lake to the unspoilt surrounding countryside. Everywhere is clean and kempt... Our recommendation is to do your research first about main restaurant closure arrangements and you will have a great stay...we feel that a rather too prominent somewhat critical review is really quite unfair..... We look forward to a further visit (maybe two), next year......

Last visited here some twenty years ago and we're delighted with our welcome by the owners who greeted us as though we had been there last week. This wonderful Hotel just gets better and although it is a winter destination for skiing in the summer it still offers plenty in terms of an indoor and outdoor pool wonderful walking and most of all peace and quiet. The owners two daughters who were teenagers are now married with children of their own and are very much involved with their husbands in the running of the business. It all adds up to a wonderful family atmosphere and most importantly the up and coming new generation serve amazing food. If you are looking to get away from it all in comfort and style then do not hesitate to book this first class establishment which we are sure will be around for generations to come.

Let’s start with the good. A beautiful location (albeit a considerable drive up a mountain), comfortable rooms, good food in one of the restaurants ( but see below),interesting wines and some-note some- nice staff. These categories are 4 star rated. Next the bad. If you are on Demi pension you may be taking your meals at the other branch of the hotel which is 5 minutes walk away. But it’s guesswork as they don’t tell you in advance. We stayed 4 night:- first night we eat at Clos de Gentisne, the other hotel. Second night in the main hotel. Third night in the main hotel with choice from the top menu. Fourth night.... see below. All through no consistant pattern. The food for Demi pension at the other hotel was fine but not particularly high quality for a Demi pension rate of 150 a night for 2 people. Now the ugly. On the fourth night we were given menus in the main hotel bar and had a drink. We then went to dinner to be told very rudely by the maitre d that we were not eating there that we should know this and should go to the other hotel. He insisted we should know this and was unwilling to take any responsibility for lack of communication or apologise for our having been misled. His attitude was clear- it was our fault. We pointed out that no one had told us this and indeed that we had checked on where were supposed to be dining. He simply said this was our fault. The explanation is simple. This is a restaurant based operation and they had lots of bookings from non residents who were presumably more worthwhile than Demi pension guests who had already spent 750 Euros including wine on their stay. So if you go- and we certainly won’t be doing so-pay the full wack or expect a French version of Basil Fawlty. And bear in mind that though you are paying anything confusing is your fault.

We stayed in the Chalet Jean, authentic Cantal mountain accomodation. The room was spacious, comfy and 30 sec walk from the main hotel. The facilities are good - games room, swimming pools indoors and out, spa, sauna. The staff and owner are friendly and attentive. The food is very good both at the restuarant and the nearby Clos de Gentiane where we ate half-board. Local wines and products are to the fore. Highly recommended.
