Maralal Safari Lodge Welcome to Maralal Safari Lodge and Wildlife Reserve, the most historic Colonial Era safari lodges in northern Kenya located in the unique Maralal National Sanctuary: the very heart of Samburu County, Kenya. Fully renovated in 2019. Owned and operated by Tulips Food Parlour Ltd. Guests enjoy free high speed WIFI, a big screen television in the lounge with international news and sports channels, swimming and much more including a modern kitchen offering both local and international cuisine. Experience wildlife as you've never seen it before as the animals approach within a few meters of the cabins, monkeys clamber on the roofs and more. Guests love opening their doors and seeing zebra, eland and impala grazing on the lawns, or hearing the leopards and hyenas laugh in the night. We offer 20 luxurious Swiss chalet style rooms, each equipped with a fireplace and a private balcony. With our conference facilities too, we are the perfect choice for pleasure or business travellers who seek tranquility. Maralal, just 3Km down the road, is the seat of government for Samburu County. This bustling town of 20,000 people offers many local crafts and a variety of lively places for both modern and traditional nightlife. The lodge is built of cedar and stone, and sits on the hillside overlooking Maralal. Here, in the heart of the National Sanctuary, the wildlife reserve thrives as the animals roam freely from the forests on three sides to the lowlands to the south. Five square kilometers of lush woodland and pasture straddle the hillside, with leopards and other mammals living in the natural caves. Within the lodge, the bar is, perhaps, the best stocked bar in northern Kenya, boasting no less than 15 famous malt whiskeys, 15 types of vodka and much more ... Oh, and a full range of cold beers too. One of the most appealing aspects of Maralal Safari Lodge is that it's a meeting point for the local people too. Above all, Maralal Safari Lodge exists to support the wildlife. All profits are devoted to the employment of Game Rangers to protect the wildlife from poachers, and to find the wildlife orphanage. So now, your visit to Kenya can really make a difference! Karibu (Swahili for 'welcome')

After 5 nights of camping in the north; it was a pleasant surprise to find that Maralal safari lodge was up and running! The rooms were great and cosy; hot showers were a pleasant surprise as well. The bar had such a large variety for all; it was nice to see the local residents of maralal town enjoying themselves! It was also great to see the abundance of animals...from zebras and eland in the early morning to gentle water-buck strolling the grounds to cheeky vervet monkeys! Wonderful place to stay over the weekend - i hope to return during the camel derby! great ambience and friendly staff

My boyfriend and I came here for the weekend to relax and enjoy the wildlife. The staff were very hospitable and flexible with us. The facilities are the best I have experienced in Kenya so far! We came in the cold season, so they lit a fire in our rooms ever night, the restaurant was available at great hours, and the food was incredible. There is also more than enough wildlife to see everyday! The Zebras, warthogs, antelope, impala are grazing right next to the restaurant while you enjoy your lunch.
I highly recommend this place if your looking for a nice, luxurious get away!

A decent spot, clean beds, polite but workforce, very limited menu. Not much attention to detail. Workers are good but apathetic management and vision. It’s fallen a ways from its glory and no style at all in essential renovations. Just getting by.

I highly recommend the Maralal Safari Lodge for anyone looking for a peaceful retreat, a place to read or write, a gathering place for a group of friends, or a resting place for people spending time in Samburu after work or play. The setting is beautiful - with wildlife coming to drink from the pond. The staff are so friendly, helpful and accommodating! We felt like family. They have great food, a fully stocked bar, comfortable beds, and small verandas off each cottage for wildlife viewing and enjoying the morning sunrise. The prices are so reasonable, I plan to return for two weeks later this year - and use it as a base for visiting people in the surrounding area.

Traveling solo, as a younger female, was a daunting experience. Maralal, a place with hidden charm, was still a huge culture shock and I was very apprehensive of finding safe and comfortable lodging once I had wound my way through the dusty streets. My expectations lowered exponentially with each passing hour and I finally caved in and thought I would at least go and see some wildlife at the Maralal Safari lodge before continuing north.

All of the travel guides I read listed the lodge as outdated but worth going to for wildlife viewing, and those guides are the outdated ones!!!

This lodge has incredible luxury compared even to places I stayed at in Nairobi! The food is the best north of Nairobi (try their fried chicken, tacos, and hamburgers for sure!) and the beds are so comfortable that I actually slept in! I was woken up to monkeys and birds, and saw herds of animals just by opening my cabin door!
If you like mornings then you must eat an early breakfast on the patio and watch every species of animal come to the watering hole (best time of day to see them).

The staff are so lovely and considerate, and the management run a truly worthwhile charity that makes the visit that much more special- because you know that your payments are going towards protecting this beautiful sanctuary. For once, I felt zero guilt for splurging on an extra cocktail (their bar is fabulously stocked), or eating the most delicious cake in Kenya ;)

Since paying 800$ for a 4day 'budget'-safari was not an option for us, we started exploring Kenya on our own. And this is how we found this amazing place. Camp (incl hot shower and wifi!) or take a nice cottage at VERY reasonable prices, find yourself in the middle of this National Reserve (no 80$/d National Park, it's FREE!) surrounded by zebra's, impala's, waterbucks, monkeys, warthogs etc, enjoy delicious food on the terrace, grab a few beers at the fireplace and appreciate the nature in silence... Because this place is still a secret to be revealed. The reason for this is that Jack, the man who left the UK for a better life creating a safe (poach-free) environment where these beautiful animals can roam without worrying, has just started this up. So yes, there are a few things that need to be straightened out (and they will be), but everybody there made our stay unforgettable and we won't forget. Jack, we wish you all the best and hope that many others will come to enjoy this amazing piece of beautiful Africa - as it should be.

It was our great pleasure to have you visit, and both myself and the staff are so very grateful for your wonderful review. I'd really appreciate an email with your suggestions as to what would be your priorities to make the camping better. Our immediate goals include more levelled camping areas, electrical points and a camper's sheltered cooking / BBQ area ... there's lot's to do and there's no shortage of ideas! Best wishes, Humperdinck 'Jack' Jackman

July 2010..... After over nine & a half hours spent on the road from Loyangalani (Lake Turkana) to travel the 235km....this Lodge seemed like heaven.
Trust me when they say the roads in Africa are rough....this is the one they are talking about. Travelling with 3 other ladies from rural Australia, we thought we knew all about rough roads but ours are not like this! We all had a great respect for our Kenyan driver, the Land Rover and the tyres! All arrived in tact.
The Lodge is quite old (?maybe built in 1960's?) and like a lot of the Lodges on "the roads less travelled" but we were well cared for and a lovely local staff member asked if we would like a fire in our rooms and quickly cut the wood and set the fire....mind you it didn't last long but enough time to warm the room while we celebrated with a few Amarulas.
A must before travelling in this area is to read "The White Maasai" this was one of the towns she would go to for groceries etc. We all relived her story as we travelled and we are pretty sure she actually stayed at this Lodge for some R & R on one occasion.
Lodge fairly basic but had a nice deep bath and hospitality warm.

After a seven-year closure, it's up and running. Love the wooden chalets and the log fire in each. The walks in the sanctuary offer amazing views of Kirisia Hillls. At night or early morning you may see the zorillas (not to be confused with gorilla) and aardvarks. There are good chances of seeing colobus monkeys, genets and leopards.

The lodge - built in 1962 - has old world charm and a great stop-over between nairobi and Lake Turkana.
