We stayed in Shakti and Shiva self catering cottages. Right next to each other and ideal for 2 couples. Quite a steep climb up to the cottages, but worth it for the views. Sad to see what has become of the municipal camp site across the lagoon. Restaurant was well priced and great food, but very much on Afrika time....

Hey guys, thanks for the great review. We purposefully take a long time with food preparation to encourage you to chill out and slow the pace down. Just kidding - unlike most backpackers we have a fully ala carte menu, but that means that when large groups arrive without notice, our chef might not have time to call in support...

Great location and good sea views. Friendly staff the only negative is the mattress was WAY past its sell by date. After complaining they replaced the mattress the next day.Menu has a daily special and great tasting food.

Hi guys, thanks for such a great review. I remember helping you plan your trip a bit and I hope it's going well. Amapondo most certainly is a friendly place, and Port St Johns too. Thanks for mentioning our tours - Warrick, our tour guide, is very friendly and extremely knowledgable about the area and he just loves taking people...

Aaahhh... When you find yourself in Port St John's make sure you stay with these champions. The staff are amazing and friendly. The hostel is beautifully situated near the beach. It's a little mission to get in to town if you don't have your own car. The room was perfect and the food amazing. Thank you Amapondo Team for the...

Hi Bjorn, thanks for a great review and your kind words - I love the fact that you called us 'Champions'. That's really made my day, and I will announce it at our next staff meeting. Regarding the mission to get to town if you don't have your own car - we do daily trips to town and we will...

Vibe is excellent. Friendly staff. Lots of people gathering around a bonfire and enjoying the loud music and lots of booze. The cottage was basic....clean(ish)...and exactly what you pay for. Unfortunately one big negative: the bed is WAY past its sell-by date. And its not just me. Met a couple who stayed there the same night and their backs were...

Seriously impressed with this place. The rooms are spacious with solid, comfy beds, the kitchen is one of the best-equipped i've seen in a hostel, the bar area is very cool with pool, table tennis etc, the shower rooms are great and the place is just generally well looked after. Best thing; the people - staff and volunteers are really...

Amazing atmosphere, great nature, friendly - this is the Transkei or Wild Coast. This backpacker is a gem if you want to relax and chill out for a few days. It has an amazing bar (yes, with three donkeys), great views, freindly staff, dogs and cats...it was hard to leave! I will be back!

Thanks for the review. So glad you had a great time and that you enjoyed Amapondo. So you met our crazy donkeys!? They don't come visit every day, but certainly on most days they do. They usually come to the bar for a carrot, but we also feed them down in their stable every day. Donkilizwe, the Alpha Female, has...

Travellers to this rural coast in South Africa can be intimidated by the lack of infrastructure, but just breathe and immerse yourself in the simplicity of this area. Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Amapondo is Ama-azing. Amapondo is nestled on a hill on the verge of a tropical rain forest and only 2 minutes walk from a beautiful beach. Head down to sunbathe or plunge in the clear warm waters of the deep rock pools nearby. The African-themed rooms and deluxe private self-catering cottages all have their own unique design and style. The quirkily designed cottages have incredible views, are really comfortable and come at a price that you'll find hard to match. Turtle Cove has one of the best views on the Wild Coast from its upstairs bubble bath, whilst Crystal House, with its glass frontage, offers classic panoramic ocean views. Whether you want a quiet, relaxing break in your own piece of paradise, a base from which you can explore the natural beauty of the area, an adventure on one of their many tours, close interactions with locals, genuine cultural experiences, yoga lessons, a deep tissue massage, or a thumping all-out party at their buzzy bar, you'll find it at Amapondo. ... more   less
