No showers, stinky hot bunker tents. Do they even wash the blankets? *shudder* However you have no other options to stay that close to Piton De Niges if you wish to do a sunrise walk. Just to give you a small positive... We could see Piton la Fournaise erupting in the distance at night AND huge bowl of coffee/hot chocolate... More

In my opinion this is the worst refuge i ever visited in my life. Poorly run facilities, unfriendly and unmotivated staff. Never the less the trip to the Piton des Neiges is a must for all hikers visiting this island. The sunrise on the top of the mountain is gorgeous and worse the effort.

Stayed here last night. I have no idea what the negative reviews are talking about, maybe written by people who have never stayed in a mountain refuge before. The refuge was spotlessly clean, the toilets flush and there was paper available. The beds are wooden bunks 3 high (get there early if you want a bottom one) and solid so... More

This is the only Gite that makes it possible to hike from Cilaos to Hellbourg. Located just beneath the Piton des Nieges, it provides basic dorm accommodation. The showers are cold, and the food for dinner is overpriced. Expect four slices of white bread for breakfast. Having said all that, the food needs to be carried in, so you shouldn't... More

The chalet is situated on a very beautiful place high above Cilaos, accessible only by foot. Simple facilities correspond to the chalet high in the mountains, which serves only as a place to sleep in a dormitory during ascent of Piton des Neiges. They provide, in addition to accommodation, a hearty and tasty dinner and a simple breakfast in the... More

We were warned by the concierge of our previous hotel and by a local guide, but still the surprise was unpleasant. Warnings received were regarding the food (apparently many people with stomach problems) and about the filthiness of the place. We brought our own food as to be sure to enjoy the next day. We requested hot drinks, but this... More

The Gite de la Caverne Dufour is a mountain refuge. It takes at about 3 hours getting there from Cilaos by hiking up 1100 meters (or alternatively from Hell-Bourg or Plaine des Cafres with over 4,5 hours). There is no other infrastructure with means that the refuge is supplied by helicopter. Given this facts, the hut is in a great... More

If you are a hiker, you know what refuges are like. They are basic, they are what the word says: a refuge. Don't expect a hotel, nor luxury. On top of that they advise in advance that there are no showers due to water shortage, so don't complain about the lack of showers. Dinner was delicious, breakfast is very basic,... More

We walked up to the refuge during an afternoon when it rained non stop with the plan to climb to the summit of "Piton des Neiges" the following morning. You could do the he climb In a day from Cilaos if you didn't want to be at the peak for sunrise. You need to book in advance via the website... More

We stay one night in this hat during our 4 day track. It is a typical mountain hut so there are no luxury. You have to book in advance as the number of beds is limited. If you want to climb Piton des Nieges (the highest pick in the Reunion Island) it is obligatory to stay at Caverne Dufour.
