Flatdogs is a gem. You become family when you visit. The staff is personable. The guides are excited to share their vast information with you, you can tell they love their jobs. And the food! Is simply amazing, I love you get to order off a menu or there large number of daily specials. This is a place people return to again and again. I know I will be going back.

This is the third safari for my husband and I, and on this visit we got to bring family and friends. Our daughter was in Zambia last year, and she chose Flatdogs Camp for our trip because of the people. We enjoyed a week at Flatdogs Camp. It is a beautiful camp on the banks of the Luangwa river. Owners Jessica and Adrian were often at meals to mingle and check on guests. They were always available for a chat or to make suggestions and arrangements for our drives and other excursions. From our welcome at check in to our departure, we have never been so warmly and genuinely cared for—by our guide, by the restaurant staff, by housekeeping, by the watchmen—it was amazing each and every day. The food was delicious, prepared especially for some of our dietary restrictions, and the menu was quite extensive. Local beef, lamb, fish, fresh vegetables, fresh baked delicacies plus special requests, were all served at every meal. We shared a chalet with part of our family, and it was very comfortable and furnished with local textiles. There are room fans, and each bed is draped in mosquito netting. One of my favorite memories is of the hippos talking to each other. You can hear them from the river, and it always made me happy. Our guide Chris was exceptional. He knew how to place the vehicle for the best shots and videos. He was calm and kind and had so many years experience as a guide. We felt very lucky to be under his care. We look forward to returning.

We returned to Flatdogs after a gap of six years, and it was better than ever. We had no 2 chalet, all to ourselves (basically an upgrade) and really appreciated the refurbished bathroom … and I think work had also been done on the roof, as bats no longer found their way through during the night! The food here is probably the best of all the game lodges in Africa. There’s an extensive menu, whereas elsewhere, there’s no or little choice at all. And it’s all top notch. You have to be careful not to pile on the pounds as it’s all so delicious. The staff are all wonderful, courteous and friendly, absolutely faultless. And if you’re on the full safari package, your laundry is done for free, which is a real bonus. Our guide was Jonathan and we were lucky to have him, as we spotted Lucy the leopard, and he knew her habits so well, he knew where she was likely to go. We spent an utterly amazing 30 minutes watching her play with her cub, and then followed her from a distance as she went off hunting. We also had great sightings of elephants, zebra, wild dogs, and an array of beautiful birds. We were very lucky, but also benefitted greatly from Jonathan’s expertise, and that of Yotan, who was our guide for our last game drive. I highly recommend them both. If you’re after a good value safari holiday, it would be difficult to beat Flatdogs!!

We had a wonderful 3 nights at Flatdogs, named after the local term for a crocodile. The camp is beautifully situated along the bank of a river and consists of thatched main buildings plus chalets and tented accommodation. Ours was a luxurious tent with a river view, completely private and well-appointed. The level of service was consistently excellent and the food was remarkably good given the challenges of its remote location. Our guide, Kennedy, deserves special mention for being well-informed and engaging. Through a combination of Kennedy’s skill and a good dose of luck our game-viewing experiences were outstanding. All in all, a highly-recommended experience.

When we left Flatdogs in January 2020 after a great holiday we didn’t think it would be more than two years before we could return. We went back to Flatdogs, our first trip post pandemic with excitement and a little trepidation - how would everything be and what might have changed? With no little delight we can say Flatdogs is better than ever. The new pool and lounging area is superb. It’s particularly good if you have a late check out (as we did) - we had lunch, swam, lounged, slept in the shade and great showers just before our flight. We stayed in both a tent on the banks of the river and the Crocs Nest. Both were looking great, refurbished and very welcoming. The Nest is wonderful for families, with its own private pool and you can eat there privately too. Which brings us to the food and the restaurant. Under Adey’s excellent direction the food is very high quality. There are daily specials as well as some Flatties classics, from high end cuisine to Zambian regulars. It is brilliant to be able to eat what (and importantly when) you want, something that is rare on safari. The Park itself was very green (end of wet season), the game viewing, birds and plant life thriving. We had Malama as our guide - no question (however stupid!) was unanswered and he made our seven days full of great gage viewing, information, entertainment- and joy! All the owners and staff could not have been more welcoming, everything felt Covid safe, and everyone was friendly and helpful. A big thank you, and we will definitely be back!
