Chikunto is a stunninly beautiful safari lodge in one of the best national parks we have ever been to in Southern Africa. Lodge: Our stay was absolutely perfect: impeccable food, service, a wonderful dining/lounge area with a pool overlooking the Luangwa river and staying refreshingly cool even whilst the outside temperatures in South Luangwa soar to above 40°C in November. The entire staff was extremely welcoming and made you feel like family. The owner Jens Kant has really created a piece of heaven here - best-in-class amenities, including a highly professional solar installation. The lodge has a perfect location - on the game drives you cover areas further towards the north of the park, which is less busy than the central Mfuwe area and has beautiful landscapes (e.g. the ebony groves were a highlight), but you are also close enough to Mfuwe to be able to cover that area of the park as well. Wildlife/sightings: Our guide Rodgers was amazing: he has many years of experience in South Luangwa, knows every spot there it seems and enabled amazing sightings during our stay. We saw leopards every day, on one night drive even 3 on one spot (male, female plus young one), even though leopards are typically solitary. We have been to many places in Southern Africa multiple times (from the Okavango Delta in Botswana, Chobe, Serengeti in Tanzania and Maasai Mara in Kenya, South Africa, etc.) and had never seen such a density of leopards before. We also saw lions, large packs of wild dogs, buffalo herds, huge number of hippos/crocs and many more. We will definitely come to Chikunto again!…
...my third time at Chikunto really felt like coming home! It was awesome to be welcomed so nicely by familiar people! Food was again very tasty, fresh and with a great variety throughout my 6 days. Robert (guide) is knowledgeable and never gives up to find the best sights. His "speciality" seems to see animals which actually cannot be seen - he spotted three chameleons and a tiny scops owl in the night...;-) I have now "completed" all three seasons in South Luangwa at Chikunto. Each time of the year has its own charme and Chikunto is anyways worth a visit at any time. :-) I am sure that all good things come not only in threes.... But in fours.... fives.... ;-) I will keep on coming back! :-) A big THANK YOU to the entire Chikunto team!
This is a small lodge (only 5 rooms) on the Luangwa river that provides exceptional service. We knew that we would have a great time on safari, seeing the animals in their natural habitat. But, the staff at Chikunto made it more that we ever expected. Benjamin and Irene waited on us hand and foot, serving us the gourmet food and always ready to top up our drinks. And they always did it with a smile and good humor. We had two guides over our 7 days, Rogers and Robert. They were the best. And, they know everything about everything: the animals, the trees, the river, the birds, the plants, and even the bugs!! A typical day at Chikunto was to wake up at 5am, have a continental breakfast out on their deck with a fire to keep you warm. Then, you head out for a morning game drive of about 4 hours depending on what you see. You do stop for snacks and to stretch your legs. When you get back to the game lodge, you are greeted with a clean, cold towel to wipe your hands and face (nice). You tell them when you want your gourmet 3 course lunch and you can rest or go to the pool. Then, you head out again between 3:30-4pm for an evening game drive. You do stop and do sunset and cocktails somewhere in the park, always with a nice view. Then, you do a night drive back to the lodge. Another gourmet 3 course meal and you are off to bed. It really is magical and you don't want it to end. Thank you Chikunto!!…
We stayed 7 nights at Chikunto Lodge in Mid Sept. 2021. I cried when saying goodbye to all the wonderful staff! They took care of us in such a personalized manner…it was beyond amazing. Stay at Chikunto lodge and you will have lifetime great memories! All the Chalet rooms are very spacious and private. We had a beautiful spacious chalet with a deck and a nice bathroom area overlooking the Luanga river. You could hear the wildlife all day and night… in a good way :). I fell in love with the hippo calls. We went on 2 game drives per day (AM and PM) with our guide allowing us to see every animal on our wish list. Our guide was Rodgers and he was so knowledgable and new how to track the animals so we would be able to experience them in their element. It was magical sitting in the landrover and watching the lions and cubs interacting as well as a leopard eating his kill (Impala) up in a tree, elephants taking mud baths and the ever funny wart hogs )reminded me of Puumba in the Lion King. We had sunset stops on the PM game drive and Rodgers and Benjamin would always find a breathtaking view for us to get out, enjoy some wine/beer and snacks and get great sunset photos. It was so much fun every day and Rodgers helped make it fun with his great laugh and sense of humor. We had amazing connections with all the staff! The meals were 4 course meals served beautifully! It was a gourmet experience at every lunch and dinner and they really went beyond setting up our table in different spots each night where we could enjoy the outdoors and sounds of the animals as they crossed the river at night. This was the most memorable trip we’ve ever taken because of the genuine loving care and attention to detail at Chikunto Safari Lodge. Thank you Chikunto!!…
My wife and I traveled to Chikunto for 7 nights and could not have been more blown away. The staff makes you feel like family and the service is impeccable. The food is amazing with a wide variety of dishes. My wife is a vegetarian and they did a wonderful job accommodating her. The game drives were out of this world. We saw a leopard kill, wild dogs hunting, so many lions, and too many elephants/hippos/giraffe to count. We even saw three leopards in one day! Robert, our spotter was always a joy. His knowledge and experience made our night drives a treat. He somehow found us a chameleon at night while driving through the bush. How he did it will remain a mystery. Josephat was the best guide we could have asked for. He made every drive feel special and his knowledge of the animals and ecology continually amazed us. He made us feel safe while also getting us the best views of the wildlife. We were deeply saddened to hear of his passing and our hearts go out to Jens and the team at Chikunto. If you are thinking about Chikunto, don’t hesitate. You can’t make a better choice.…
