Initially, I was somewhat disappointed in my premium single room. There was no comfortable reading chair (only a formal straight back chair), the lamp had cobwebs, no coffee pot, and the carpet was terribly stained. The bathroom was okay but only had a shower, no tub. When I returned from the symphony performance at the outdoor amphitheater, however, the bed... More

This is a lovely old hotel in easy proximity of all the Chautauqua Institutions facilities. The staff are friendly and helpful. The rooms are shabby. Ours had 2 twin beds with very hard mattresses and hard (not fluffy pillows). The rooms have individual air conditioners and heaters. The good news is the bathroom was spacious and the walkin closet was... More

Went last weekend to the Athenaeum with another couple to enjoy Chattaqua What a dump of a hotel. I'm sure at one time it was nice, but is in such disrepair with worn and stained carpeting, rotting wood panels. The room was atrocious and uncomfortable, and to top it off ridiculously expensive for what you get. We paid 370 dollars... More

My husband and I have been frequent visitors to the Chautauqua Institute for 15 years, but always staying off-campus to avoid the high charges for rooms. We had always dreamed of someday splurging for a stay at the Athenaeum Hotel. When they offered a half-price deal the night of the multi-arts performance of Carmina Burana in the Amp, we jumped... Don't come here expecting the Ritz- Carlton-- or St. Regis, but do expect a wonderful piece of history in a classic wooden hotel. The staff here is very attentive, friendly, and ready to help you. The building is beautiful even if it is well used and showing signs of its age. Look beyond what might be considered rough edges and... More

The good - I took advantage of the Athenaeum Hotel special that included the room, breakfast, a gate pass and parking. Checking in couldn't have been easier, you drive into the Institute, unload the car and a valet parks the car. The bad - this is an old hotel, some would call charming. This is a far cry from a... Growing up, my family would often visit Chautauqua. I always remembered the Athenaeum Hotel and how it was such a grand place and a neighborhood landmark. But with a recent trip as an adult with my kids, I thought it would be fun to stay at the hotel as a treat. I have to say, my husband (who had never... More

Older room with a strange step into it, no view, and a wall in front of the door. having said that, it IS an old hotel and the bed was fine. Shower OK. View from terrace for dinner was peaceful and it was a fun weekend. Really did all the institute had to offer in a day. Small place. Good... More

They don't build them anymore like this grand wooden hotel from the 1880s overlooking Chautauqua Lake. The huge veranda provides a wonderful place to dine outside or to plop down in a rocking chair to read or admire the view. Your rate includes most of the events taking place at Chautauqua Institution all day and evening. All meals include a... More

Made reservations for outside but when we arrived we were told we were to sit inside. It is loud, cavernous, no tablecloths notables, slow service. Cesar salad too lightly dressed. Shrimp risotto had overcooked shrimp and undercooked rice. Un attentive service. Feeling a bit captive as this is THE place to eat on the grounds of Chautauqua. Served myself water... More
