We loved old historic hotels but the motel section really needed updating. We reserved the room on line but when we got there (we had requested a ground floor room) we were told that there were no ground floor rooms at the price we paid...More
El Rancho has a celebrity history going back many decades. Movies made in the area needed a hotel for their stars and El Rancho was it. It certainly has history and deserves its accolades.

This place had its day a while back. While the movie history is impressive and interesting, with some great photos on the walls, the hotel itself is jaded and badly in need of an update. The rooms are very basic, the pool looked unclean and...More
Lovely historical hotel with atmospheric interior. Lots of photos of film stars and all the rooms are named after them. The male clerk on reception was friendly and helpful and told us about the nightly Indian dancing in the town which was amazing.
We loved this hotel--the rooms were huge and decorated in old-style Western Hollywood. We had a wonderful vanilla ice-cream mudslide drink at the 49er bar and a great breakfast in the hotel the next morning. Worth the drive up to Gallup just to stay there.

It is delicious and the place is serene. This hotel looks lovely but didn't stay here but will the next time I am in the area.

I traveled Route 66 back in September and stayed at El Rancho hotel. A lot of US hotels do not seem to have email address for which to contact them so we phoned them using Skype. The calls cost around around 6 cents / minute. Skype uses wifi as the connection medium - which I found was at all the hotels in the US that I stayed at and I could phone ahead/pre book a room.
Skype is far cheaper than roaming with your cell phone as I regularly made calls home to New Zealand.
Enjoy your travels and the charm of El Rancho hotel.
FYI the room we stayed in was Spencer Tracey's
