My ratings say it all. A generous breakfast added into the price makes it one of the best priced establishments I have ever stayed in. I stayed over in a room impeccably clean, good linen, all in place.

We passed by and stopped here spontaneously. Welcoming staff and tasty home cooked main meal. A few days later we made a point of coming back when passing again. Would recommend an overnight stay here based on our experience so far, we hadn't factored any time in Swellendam this time!

On our way traveling from The Strand, Western Cape to Malgas with Dave & Kath Izzett. It was by accident we found this quaint BnB restaurant. I had the curry fish dish, I can't remember when last I'd such a delicious curry fish.

Stopped in to have a quick breakfast on our way home and what a pleasure it was. Excellent service, excellent ambience and excellent Breakfast. African Shades is also a bed and breakfast and will be definitely on our overnight stay list.

We chose African shades as a stopover destination in Swellendam. The name conjured up warm African colour and style which is not really what we found. However the room was functional and clean. The breakfast good.

Pleasant stay, nice and quiet, in room at front rather than facing pool, but comfortable with good bathroom and parking right outside the door. Would use this again as it's a good base for Swellendam and Bontebok

Management and staff friendly and helpful in every respect. Includes a well maintained secluded swimming pool. Well situated on the main road through Swellendam. near to restaurants, craft shops and the Pottery manufacturer. Incredible pottery making to be seen. A tranquil clean town. Good stop to rejuvenate on way between Cape Town and Eastern Cape. Will definitely visit again.

We only stayed for one night on the way back to the airport. We were greeted in a warm, friendly manner and our car was parked safely in the adjacent parking area. We had everything we needed in our room to make our stay comfortable we would have no hesitation in recommending this Guest House and we would stay here...

Driving through Swellendam we noticed this cafe on the right and decided to stop by. It was quite busy and we had to get a member of staff's attention to get directed to a table. We were only given a drinks menu but later noticed other customers had snacks/light lunches. We did however order cake with the hot drinks but...

Room is ok for one night. For a longer stay air condition would be better and a little refurbishment would also help to feel more comfortable and get the musty odor out, but comparing our room to the pictures maybe we got an old non refurbished room. Breakfast was very delicious and the staff was also very friendly.

“All rooms are great - if you want more secluded then ask for one by the pool.”

“Could not fault a thing at this really nice place. Everything was perfect. The rooms were comfortable and clean, and there was not a thing out of place at the whole establishment. The location was ideal too. Breakfast was enjoyed at the owners restaurant across the road and this was really nice, we wanted for nothing during our three night stay.”
