Went over President's Week as we were looking for a few days away with the kids. Stayed at the Grand Cascades Lodge. The prices were jacked up as to be expected, to $800 a night for a one bedroom suite. The hotel itself presents very grand upon entry. The exterior is majestic as portrayed in the photos. That's pretty much where it ends. The room looked nice upon entry - seemingly clean updated. The refrigerator had finger prints all over and the kitchen supplies were scarce and not the cleanest. The resort offers some activities for kids, but the majority of them are a la carte. There is a $20 fee per half hour to climb the rock wall, $29 per bear to build a bear, and I believe a $30 fee to march across the plastic Glice rink. My kids did enjoy the pool and the off site snowtubing. The fun came that night, however, when turning down the bed. Our suite offered a king size bed which the kids would be occupying. I turned down the bed for them, which was absolutely rock hard, and there under the sheets was not one, not two, but many different types of hair. I was repulsed. I proceeded to strip the bed. I usually always bring a set of sheets with me when traveling, just in case. When I got to the mattress cover, no surprise, more hair! I took a wet towel and tried cleaning it as best I could. I laid my clean sheets down and tried to strip the comforter off the bed that was encased in sheets. That too, covered in hair. There was so much hair that my son actually asked if someone got a haircut in the bed. I then went to the closet and found the spare blanket. You guessed it, more hair. I had never in my life seen anything like this. I am used to traveling extensively for work. And on occasion, it does happen where there is a stray hair somewhere, but nothing to the likes of this. I did not want to be bothered with housekeeping but at this point I was irate. I called the front desk and explained my situation. The gentleman at the desk did offer to have the sheets changed but after what I had witnessed, there was no way I was sleeping in their sheets. I merely asked for a clean blanket to put on top of the bed. Housekeeping came fairly quickly and handed off the blanket. When I opened up the blanket to put it on the bed, it was covered in 3 large stains. I was absolutely disgusted. I had packed 4 large bath towels and those were our blankets for the night. I then moved on the living area which housed a pull out couch. I told my husband to not even bother opening it. He attempted, regardless, to open the couch. And there across the back of the cushion and the interior of the couch were two big red streaks. I am unsure exactly what they were and I wasn't going to find out. He quickly closed the bed back up and I laid another of my sheets across the top with another towel. Needless to say, no one slept that night. My husband doesn't like to cause a scene so he pleaded with me not to say anything. I also didn't want to upset the kids. If it were just he and I, I would've demanded a refund and left immediately. So after spending close to 2K to stay at this place for 2 nights, we ended up making a trip to Walmart so I could purchase proper bedding. No one had slept the night before and we were all cranky and irritable. The next night, we attended the dinner and a show event. We had made the reservation upon arrival but were hesitant after the hair incident. My husband called the front desk and the manager told him that if we were a "no show" we would be billed, so we had to make a decision. We decided to move forward, again, to not upset the kids. Dinner was supposed to be an Italian buffet. For $50 a person, you received your choice of some meatballs, a giant trough of pasta with oil, a cheese platter, some rubber chicken fingers and mac and cheese. There were some other trivial items not worth mentioning. Needless to say, we were hungry when we left. The room was awkward and over lit and only at about 1/3 capacity. So not so sure what the cancelation billing threat was about. It looked like a wedding hall which wasn't in use that day. Needless to say, I would never ever go back to this place. They obviously can't handle the size of the hotel and cut corners wherever they can. I am just angry that I spent my hard earned money here, and all I can say was I have some new travel sheets to show for it. There are plenty of other places that are less expensive and much cleaner than this. Don't waste your money or your time.

Dear Sunshine27966028969, I'm so terribly sorry to learn about the cleanliness issues you described having experienced in your room and wanted to let you know that your feedback is very important to us. That said, please email me directly at service@csresort.com with your booking information so we can determine your exact room number and also so our housekeeping manager can properly address this with our staff members who had serviced your room prior to you checking into the hotel. Regarding your experience with our Dinner and a Show, I'm also sorry that your family did not enjoy our cuisine that night. This feedback has also already been received by our banquet managers so they can better understand where we fell short on delivering a wonderful dining experience for you and your family. For the other activities you mentioned, we do advertise all of this directly on our website so guest's can effectively plan our their stay in advance. On our activities 'things to do' page, we list everything available including the activity description, if there are any age restrictions, which hotel the activity will be held at along with the exact time, and of course – if there is an upcharge. Our booking agents also go over this with guest's over the phone so there should hopefully be no surprises about the cost of various things prior to checking into the hotel. Nevertheless, I do look forward to hearing back from you at your earliest convenience. Kind Regards, Mike Guest Experience Manager

The facilities are lovely - but when it’s busy it’s pretty much just like being at a luxury resort with the vibes of a chuck e cheese (I love kids too so the fact that it bothered me says a lot.) I understand the resort has activities and packages that cater to families, but maybe there could be an adults only pool/area of the hotel? The biosphere pool is beautiful despite being crowded. In the queen rooms the beds are as hard as a rock. Literally was in pain trying to sleep on them - my boyfriend almost slept on the floor. Our sink also made a loud sound like a cow mooing when the hot water was turned on. There’s also no dresser in the queen rooms. The resort was able to switch us to a suite for one night of our three night stay, which had a much more comfortable bed. That being said the suites are also very nice with fireplaces, kitchenette, and jacuzzi bathtub. The massage I got at the spa was lovely and the locker room had a really nice steam shower. I also loved the goat yoga. We tried the GLICE skating and it was literally awful. You’re basically just standing on a plastic floor and there’s no way to actually skate. We saw families take their kids on it with regular shoes just to run around. It’s so embarrassing that crystal springs thinks it’s okay to charge people for that. We were luckily able to get a refund. There is an upcharge for pretty much everything.

Dear Alyssa, Thank you for sharing your honest feedback with me regarding this recent stay at Grand Cascades Lodge. I'm so glad to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us overall but am sorry to learn about some of your disappointments. I will make sure that all of your feedback is properly received by our hotel operations team. That said, it does sound like your dates of stay fell within the same dates that kids were out of school for President's Day week and this likely contributed to the overall busyness of many areas within the hotel. We do hope to see you again at some point in the future here at Crystal Springs Resort. Kind Regards, Mike Guest Experience Manager

My wife and I went to the Spa and had an exceptional visit. Everyone was very friendly and accommodating. We had dinner at The Tavern which was very good. The room we stayed in was spotless when we arrived and ready early. The indoor and outdoor (heated) pools were very relaxing. We had room service for breakfast which was delicious. We will be going back for another visit.

Overall the hotel and its amenities are great! We really enjoyed the pools and thought they were the best part of our stay. We were disappointed to learn at checkout the last day after our spa services that they charged a service fee on top of the generous tip we had already left the masseuses. There were no receipts during the spa checkout process or no explanation of that prior to asking how much we’d like to tip. I felt this was deceitful and led to us leaving nearly a 40% tip unknowingly. They also charge tax on top of the services which no other spa I’ve been to does that. The other negative we experienced is that only one restaurant is open during the week Monday - Wednesday so the same food gets tiresome or you have to drive to the other resort for a very similar menu at Kites. Overall, amenities are worth the stay, but the rooms are a bit lack luster for the price (bathrooms are nothing to rave about).

Hi Courtney, Thank you for sharing your experience with me – I'm so glad that you and Thomas had a wonderful time overall at our 4-Star Grand Cascades Lodge! I am very sorry however, for any misunderstanding regarding the spa taxes and fees. I do see that you had actually booked this online with us and wanted to let you know, that as you are selecting the type of service, it's subtotal price is listed and directly to the right of it, is also the combined amount for both taxes and fees as a distinct/separate charge. Please note, in order for you to proceed with your online spa booking, this information must be fully read and is not listed as fine print. We are very sorry again nevertheless, for any confusion or misunderstanding regarding this. Additionally, after completing the booking for this online, you had received a confirmation email from us, which states: Total Charges: $ 180.00 (before tax, service charge and gratuity) Then 3 days prior to your actual appointment, you were emailed an upcoming courtesy email that once again included the subtotal of the services along with a final total including all the taxes and service fees (minus gratuity). I cannot speak to how other spa's work in taxes to their pricing, however in the state of NJ, we are legally required to charge this for spa services, and taxes do not belong to Crystal Springs Resort. I hope this helps, and thank you again for sharing all of your feedback with me. We do hope to see you back again at some point in the future! Mike Guest Experience Manager

We loved our stay at Grand Cascades. It feels like an upscale ski lodge. (You’d have no idea you’re in NJ!) I have three little kids and there was no shortage of things to do at the resort every day- the pool, activities like build a stuffed animal, dinner and a show, scavenger hunt, s’more making at night … I think there is good value relative to the cost of staying at similar resorts in the greater NY area. Oh, and we loved the daily breakfasts.

-The hotel itself is beautiful, especially when decorated for the holidays. -Food and service at Crystal Tavern are outstanding, even on an extremely busy Sat night with a wedding in the adjacent Emerald Ballroom as well. -$40 per room breakfast credit is perfect for 2 people (but not 4) -The spa is top-notch, and massage from Todd was amazing. He is extremely knowledgeable and skilled. I highly recommend that you request him if you book a massage. So why only 4 stars? A couple of reasons. First, the rooms are worn and shoddy. The tp holder in the bathroom is installed lopsided, tiles are coming loose from the wall near the floor, the ceiling light fixture is falling down, and in the kitchen the faucet is broken. For a resort charging $600+ per night, I would expect the housekeeping and maintenance crews to be checking for such obvious deficiencies. Basically, public spaces at the hotel felt like a Ritz Carlton but the rooms felt like Motel 6. And second, while the spa services were wonderful, I consider the fees to be on the high side. It’s $200 for a 50-minute deep tissue massage. I added a 20% tip (as I said, Todd was amazing!) and at checkout I asked to confirm that my total was $240. I was told that was correct, however when I looked at the bill printout later I saw additional charges for tax, and a “spa service fee” so the total cost of my massage was actually closer to $275. To be fair, this is spelled out on their website so it is not hidden, but yikes! Overall it was a lovely stay but if I come back I’ll try to do it during the week when room prices are lower, and I’ll skip the massage.

Disappointing. Firstly, we dined at the Crystal Tavern the beef had hair in it when asked for a new order the same dish came back over cooked . And was clearly the same cut of meat .My other child’s order was a plain burger omit the bacon for Religious reasons. It came to us with bacon . The pool that was supposed to be open was closed . Archery that we signed up for was canceled one bad thing after the next . Lastly my disability prevents me from walking long distances which is why I have a handicap plate . No one made me aware that there would be construction going on at the handicap parking . I couldn’t retrieve my car without having to walk all the way around the hotel with luggage. The disregard for the disabled is terrible . Shame on you Grand Cascades! Do better !

Dear Lisa, Thank you again for choosing Crystal Springs Resort as well as for sharing your feedback with us. Again, we are very sorry to learn about the various issues you mentioned in your 3 separate reviews as well as from reaching out directly to us. As I had already expressed to you previously, the construction that was occurring in front of our lobby should not have interfered with your access to our handicapped parking spots which are on the Clubhouse side of our hotel. Nevertheless, we are so sorry for any inconvenience that you experienced. I also let you know that ALL of our pools and amenities were 100% open and available to all guest's during your dates of stay and per our advertised hours of operation. The outdoor heated pool outside of our Biosphere Pool Complex, is only open Fri-Sun from 11am-7pm during this time of year. This information is readily available both on our website as well as provided to our guest's over the phone by our reservation agents. We did also listen to your various recorded inbound/outbound booking calls to see if something was incorrectly stated to you, however there was never any discussion with regards to obtaining information on our pool's or availability for archery. On Monday's, archery is presently only available in the afternoon at our quarry location (well past our standard 11am checkout time). This is also noted on our website and all guest's are handed a printout of activities that pertain to your dates of stay at the time of check-in along with the rest of the details for your stay. Regarding the issue with your son's beef dish at our Crystal Tavern, please accept our sincerest apologies for what you described having occurred. I did want to let you know however, that our food and beverage team would not send the same dish back out to any of our guest's. Crystal Springs Resort is a 4-Star culinary destination that adheres to the absolute strictest of food preparation and handling standards. Again, we are very sorry you did not enjoy your time with us and hope you reconsider visitng us again in the future! Kindest Regards, Mike Guest Experience Manager
