Detailed Reviews
For our one year marriage anniversary we have chosen this excellent hotel with a wellness part and amazing retaurant. The wellness part is divided in to three parts. Inside pools with several kinds of bubbling and streaming, outside part - it was allteady clodes due to the of season and the private part - suitable for couples wit a jacuzzi, sauna shower and a waterbed - can be rented for appox 18500ft for 1,5 hrs. Must say that the private wellness part gives you the maximum of chill time :)
Restaurant
Breakfast with huge variety off very tasty food fruits and tipical continental breakfast.
Supper is a la cart, the food i my opinion is very very good. You can try tipical hungarian dishes and also can take a trip to other cuisines.
Vegetarian food also provided in both cases.
The room
We got a 22sqm french beded room with balcony that looked on the garden. Confortabe, feels like home, perfect for couples. Tottaly satisfied with it.
I would recommend this place to all who want to have a relaxing time in a beautiful sourroundig of the Bükk.

What I liked: The hotel is located in a beautiful environment. It must have been recently renovated. The common areas are nice. Everything is clean. The deluxe room is spacious, except for the bathroom. Everything was clean. Everyone is kind. The kitchen is outstanding, with delicious flavors and a wide variety.
What I didn't like: Every 10 minutes, the air conditioning made a loud noise, and I couldn't sleep properly. There was a sewage smell in the bathroom. The wooden chairs on the terrace are uncomfortable. In the wellness area, the water in the pools was 2-3 degrees lower than indicated; it wasn't warm at all, not even in the jacuzzi. The outdoor pool was particularly cold in the summer (outside temperature was 27 degrees). Although the outdoor pool is open until 9:00 PM, the mattresses were taken away by 7:30 PM. The sauna area is boring and had an unpleasant smell.

We have been here again after last year for some days on weekdays. We were really curious weather the quality remained the same but it is still a very high quality hotel. The wellness is clean and there are several pools in different temperatures suitable for kids and adults. The rooms are nice and the food is simply the best we have ever had in a hotel. The mattress in the room was a bit hard for us but when we asked the receptionist about it he offered a cover mattress for us. I was pleasantly surprised! Well done, Hotel Avar!

Great spa area and pool. The spa services were excellent, however we were there in the middle of a heat wave and there was not adequate air conditioning in the rooms or in the treatment rooms. The beds were a little rough (extremely firm) and sleeping was difficult due to the temperature. The price was very steep for the quality. We had just come from a hotel in Budapest which blew this one away for less money. The front desk seemed reluctant to assist us with our travel (we were attending a close by festival and had trouble with getting bus passes which we eventually figured out on our own). I do speak some Hungarian and understand more than I can speak and even so the customer service was reluctant at best.

4 guests, 2 rooms, 4 nights:
Pros:
*Excellent* managament and staff, amazing team, really top of their game!
SUPERB area for natural beauty and lovely views from upper floors, especially on the east facing side.
Kitchen: catered well for our Gluten free guest, but do let them know in advance of your stay!
Perfect... *PERFECT* Matra location.
Superb wellness! One of the best!
Cons:
Beds! Hard extremely uncomfortable beds, as bad as they come.
Rooms: Curtains let plenty of light through
Bathroom: 3 powerful spotlights means if you dare switch bathroom lights on it WILL wake you up, and thanks to the glass partion between bathroom and room it will light up the entire room and wake any living creature in the same room instantly
AC: Weak, not great for summer.
Food: The chef can clearly cook.... and cook *very* well. However its a menu that would be served in a (very good) Budapest hotel. This is Matra. We need Matra and some locally sourced ingredients. I think the chef must have came in from a good Budapest hotel, some one just needs to give him a nudge we are now in Matra.
Diet: No vegetables on the Sunday hot buffet, carbs and protiens only. Chefs night off?
Wine list: just 1 Matra wine in red / rose and white selections.
Summary, excellently located with some of tbe best wellness....amazing staff. Just everything related to sleep is 'poor to very poor'. Food is excellent, just not local style. With the exception of wellness, there is however better in the Paloc region (Castellum, Ozon etc...)
