A good hotel in a great position overlooking the river.
Reception good and friendly. Room clean and tidy. Breakfast adequate, but easy to go out to nearby cafes for breakfasts.

I would recommend Bath/Brunswick as a good hub from which to enjoy two of the three items you mentioned. The beach at the state park is really one of the better ones on the coast. Plus the shopping in Freeport is very extensive. However, if amusement parks are higher on your list, then use a spot closer to Portland, so you can be closer to Old Orchard Beach. So, it really depends on which of your three focus areas are most important for your family.
