A proper little country pub with award winning accommodation. We are located in the beautiful Northumberland National Park and we have some of the DARKEST SKIES in England. We are very close to Kielder Water and Observatory, Hadrian's Wall, Alnwick Gardens and the Coast. There are some beautiful walks that start from the pub including an ancient BASTLE trail. We have 2 family rooms and also welcome well behaved dogs. Whether you are coming to the area to walk, cycle, star gaze or just relax we can assure you of a very warm welcome.

We had our first post-lockdown break at the Hollybush Inn in July. We just stayed one night on our way up to Scotland. We stayed in the Brown Room which was spacious and pleasant enough. We also ate in the restaurant: the starter of black pudding was fantastic. The mains, which were pastry topped pies were tasty albeit maybe slightly over priced.

There are two things that really make the Hollybush stand out:
The setting and the views - Greenhaugh is a gorgeous little hamlet. When we visited it was lovely to see all the beautiful well kept cottage gardens and the hanging baskets outside the pub. The beer garden at the back has expansive views over the surrounding hills and it was absolute bliss after lockdown. It really felt like taking a breath of fresh air and feeling a sense of freedom.

The other thing is the staff were really accommodating and helpful, despite working in more difficult conditions due to Covid restrictions. They were so friendly and welcoming, indulging us when my husband went for a crazy run through the hills and got back a bit late for our dinner reservation. They also took our starters out into the beer garden so we could enjoy the sunset. We had a great chat with staff members and some of the locals over drinks later in the evening, then as we were checking out the next day, we happened to mention the quality of the sausages and haggis served for breakfast. We were advised that the produce came from a butchers in Hexham and as I hadn't tried any haggis, we were given some to take home and try.

Lovely people and our visit really lifted the spirits after the last few challenging months.

The room was spot on, very clean & tidy. Soaps, tea, coffee, a small TV & kettle provided along with fresh fluffy towels.

The pub is also very well kept, as well as very clean, with loads of seating & benches out the back (also with great views).

The staff were very friendly & chatty (John the owner, & Chris to name a few).

I also had breakfast the following morning which was cooked perfectly & did the job nicely before my 3+ hour drive back down to Yorkshire.

Would definitely stay again when I'm next in the area, the staff all seem to take the time out to talk with the customers & have a wealth of local knowledge as well as a reasonably priced fully stocked bar & great food!! What more could you ask for? They also take card payments. 👍

We spent four lovely nights at the Inn. The hosts were extremely welcoming and had made a tremendous effort to ensure that it was Covid-secure. Rooms were clean and comfortable, with plenty of character. We ate in for two evenings and the food was quite exceptional. A quiet and scenic location, and only 10 minutes drive from Kielder Dam.

From the moment we walked in until we left the next day we were made to feel very welcome, the couple that run/own this pub were so friendly and worked hard to ensure our stay was everything we wanted.
We stayed in the Green Room which is located next door to the pub, I booked this room as it stated on the website that this was a quiet room and not above the pub - we certainly slept well.
We had drinks in the bar and actually sat outside in the gorgeous beer garden which overlooks fields - so relaxing.
The locals who were drinking in the bar and outside were so friendly.
We ate dinner in the little dining area, good pub grub just what we needed after a long day.
Breakfast was a chilled out affair with plenty of Tea and coffee!
Overall A great friendly little local pub full of atmosphere.
Would we stay here again? Yes definitely!!

My husband and I stayed at the Holly Bush Inn on a very cold night in February. We were greeted by the wonderfully friendly family who run the pub and a roaring fire in the bar.
The pub is dog friendly, so there was no issue with us having our puppy in the bedroom or bar. We booked for dinner as the inn seems to be very popular with locals as well and visitors. A fantastic selection of drinks are offered from local ales to gins and whiskies. We ordered the Penang curry and both agreed this was the best meal out we had had in ages! We went to bed very full and had a great night's sleep.
We will definitely be returning to the Holly Bush and would recommend it to anyone who likes a traditional country pub.

Delicious food and in a stunning location. We ate our meal outside, it was so tasty, and the staff were very friendly and efficient as well.
Well worth booking in advance, they told us that they get very busy, especially at weekends and Bank Holidays.

My wife and I stayed at the Holly Bush Inn for three nights in February, 10th to 14th.
We stayed in the Pink Room. This was a lovely charming room with lots of character. The owners are very welcoming and nothing is too much trouble. It has a warm and cosy bar area as well as a pleasant dining room too.
Breakfasts are great and filling and set you up for the day.
We ate in the Inn each night as the food was excellent and the tipple well worth a try. We had good conversations with a few local residents in Greenhaugh who came in for a drink as well.

The Inn is 2 miles from Kielder Water and 14 miles from Kielder at the top of the lake. It sits in a great location for visiting many historical and tourist sights. The views from the Inn are well worth it

I will definitely come back and stay here again.
Highly recommend. Book direct with owners.

I’ve had to give this 1 star in order to post a review or I’d give it 0
Worst experience Of staying in a b&b I’ve ever had.
It was my daughters 21st birthday so we decided to stay here as we love walking in this area and our favourite b&b was sold out.
First of all you walk into the bar to check in , full of regulars and made to feel so uncomfortable. Not friendly atall being stared at.
We went up to our room, we took our dog, and he knocked over the toilet brush. Lots of dirty fluid spilled all over bathroom floor. Knocked me physically sick.

Then there’s the noise. Don’t expect to get any sleep while bar open. There’s regulars and their dogs outside talking and cheering and the other rooms playing tv loud.

Then out the back, which I must add is the neighbouring land. You have dogs locked in cages with no shelter, that cry all night. I looked out window to see the neighbour who owns the animals kicking them. Very very distressing.

I packed myself and my daughters things together and went to hand keys in , I couldn’t stand the night there any longer.
Explained to owner the experience and why I wanted to leave and how the dogs out the back were distressing us. All I got was ‘well they’re working dogs!’
To which I replied ‘so they deserve to be kicked and left out in rain’!! Not want you want to see or hear.

What really angered me was there was no empathy atall and they continued to take the full amount of £105 and even add £10 on for my dog being in room even though I’d only been there few hours, not slept in room or had breakfast.
No empathy atall.

It ruined my daughters birthday and I had to make the 2 hour journey home tired.

Not worth the money either.

Sorry we’ve been a while in responding to this as we’ve been very busy with lots of happy customers It’s hard to know where to start but here goes. You mentioned you checked in and felt uncomfortable with locals in the bar…not what most visitors have said. The toilet brushes are cleaned and refilled with steriliser every room service and knowing where this one is placed we can’t work out how your dog could have toppled it ? After you checked in we didn’t see you again until you wanted to leave at around 10.30 pm certainly you didn’t dine or drink with us You say the room was noisy but this room is the quietest in the pub cottage and well away from the bar and without a window onto the beer garden or land next door. In fact as the weather was wet there was no one in the beer garden and after the other residents had eaten and gone to bed we were exceptionally quiet with only the staff and one local in the bar at 10.30. You say dogs were barking…we didn’t hear them and neither did the residents in the room next to and below you (we did ask them in the morning). One did comment however that he heard what seemed like a heated argument coming from your room. You are obviously annoyed that we charged you but how can we re-let an unserviced room to someone else at 10.30pm ? But this is nothing compared to the allegations of animal treatment against our neighbour, one of the most respected and experienced shepherd and sheepdog trainers in the county. To allege he kicks and mistreats his dogs is completely untrue and can be verified by two lots of cctv coverage, in fact he and his wife were out for the evening from 5pm. The working dogs do live outside overnight in runs with proper kennels when they are not out working in the fields. The whole family are animal lovers with house dogs and even a Shetland pony and are the best neighbours you could ask for. These are serious allegations about them and completely untrue So to anyone reading this please look at our other reviews in particular the one after this who was one of the other residents in a nearby room

What a lovely little place to visit. The food was very nice. The steaks were slightly more done than asked for but still were very tasty for those that chose them. The staff went above and beyond to cater for our needs as I am not easy to feed, being pescatarian, coeliac and having other allergies. They made a delicious meal that we all enjoyed at a very reasonable price. Somewhere we would love to return. Thank you to the staff again for making us so welcome.

I requested a family room for me and my two young sons ages 6 & 7 years. Our room was cold, damp and located above the pubs main busy room so it sounded like there was a party in our room and we couldn’t hear the tv for the noise in the pub below.

When I queried it with the owner they said to me “well it is a pub and last night the customers left at 1am, so I don’t know what time we will close tonight”

We sat for dinner at 5.30 and our food still hadn’t arrived at 6.30 so I had to buy my sons some crisps from the bar. When their food arrived the pizza base was like rubber and the tomato sauce had lumps and herbs in it, there was barely any cheese on top as you would expect a children’s pizza , so I took it to the kitchen and requested a plate of plane paste with butter, the chef was very kind and made my sons their pasta. The bill for one starter which had two falafel and tiny pot of hummus, chicken curry, spaghetti with butter and 4 drinks equated to £57.

My children and I were unable to stay in the room due to the damp and noice so we had to leave and we’re still charged the full price of £110.
We had to drive the two hrs home after a day out at Kielder Forrest.

They deducted the meal which was £57 . Having not seen the bill I believe the charged me for the pizzas that were un-eatable.

Really disappointing end to such a long but lovely day at Kielder Forrest.

Responded 30 Nov 2022
You booked the room through booking.com the day before you were due to arrive it was the last room available and the description on Booking.com clearly states it is a budget double or twin room that is located above the bar and can be noisy. The description also states that as this booking is within the three days cancellation period it is non-refundable On the afternoon you were due to arrive you telephoned the pub presumably when you were out enjoying your day in Kielder saying one of your children was not well and could they cancel. We reminded you of the cancellation charging policy whereupon you said you would probably come anyway so we left the room in your name You then checked in with your two children and spent some time in the room before asking about food for which you did not have a booking, we managed to slot you in with the early diners who were heading for the Observatory that evening We have a small kitchen with one chef and everything is prepared to order so obviously this put a little bit of pressure on our Chef hence the food did not come out quite as quickly as you would’ve liked. You then approached the Chef saying you were not happy with the pizzas and that they had fresh vegetables and herbs on them and were not smooth so he produced two other dishes free of charge Then you went back to your room but came back into the bar not long afterwards saying the room was cold and noisy. We admit our mistake in that the heating had not been turned back up again from the vacant occupancy the days before your arrival but this was rectified immediately( like most places we are trying to conserve energy where we can) you never mentioned dampness at this time something our rooms do not suffer from especially this one being above the bar and it’s roaring fire. We would’ve happily upgraded you to another more appropriate room free of charge, but all rooms were occupied that evening. You stated you wished to check out. We then presented you with the bill for food which we said we would wave as a gesture of goodwill, after which you left presumably to begin composing your bad reviews In conclusion we urge any other prospective visitors to look at our other reviews and make your own judgement but remember that this is a small pub in the country that often enjoys busy weekend evenings with friendly locals and a great atmosphere

Are all rooms disabled accesssable / on the ground floor, do you have a lift.
Answer from Lesley13152
Blackpool, United Kingdom46 contributions39 helpful votes
We stayed on the first floor where as far as I know there are 3 rooms. I didn't see a lift and it is an old pub with narrow stairs. There is another room, separate from the pub, (just next door) This may be on the ground floor, you would need to check. The pub downstairs is very small and I'm not sure if there would be room for wheelchair access.
