We just had our first weekend stay at Starved Rock Lodge in a cabin room. Overall, it was extremely pleasant. The area is beautiful, the staff are knowledgeable and friendly, and the facilities are a good fit to the environment. Location: Five stars. Starved Rock is a huge historic building sitting in the middle of a large state park. The... More

Thanks so much for your glowing review. I love your style in how you touched on every aspect of the Lodge experience. Not sure which set of cabins you did stay in Pioneer (no TV's or Sunset Cabins - carpet and TV;s) but you are right they can be a bit basic. Hotel Wing is a bit larger and set... More

My husband and I spent three nights here, staying in the historic section of the lodge. The rooms here are a bit small and the bathroom is cozy. We had a king size bed, a small table with chairs, a dresser and a nightstand. Lighting was a bit inadequate and we couldn't get the ceiling fan to turn off. It... More

One of our favorite things to do when hiking at Starve Rock, is to stop at the lodge. It is always wonderful to rest our legs after a day of hiking. You can sit in front of the fire on cold days. There are couchs and table and chairs, so you can visit, read or play a game you brought.... More

We loved this lodge for its location. The restaurant has really good food as well. The room is tiny, though. Although I would say, cozy! What we do not like is that the beds are too soft and the bathroom is very squeezy. Other than that we loved our two nights stay. Because we can just go back to this... More

Yes, the bathrooms are "squeezy" :). The smaller bathrooms are in the Lodge wing which is on the National Historic Register so we are not allowed to change the size as that would change the historic character of the room. Fortunately the State added a Hotel wing several years ago which has nice large bathrooms. I would suggest trying one... More

My wife & son took me here for my birthday. We rented an excellent cabin and hiked the many trails. But this review is about their main dining room and it is a winner. We went mid week so it was not as crowded as on a weekend. In total over 3 days we had breakfast, lunch and dinner in... More

Unfortunately the entire time we were at Starved Rock State Park it was pouring down rain. Therefore, we spent more time in the hotel, or should I say all of the time in the hotel. We did eat at one of our favorite restaurants called Shakers in Ottawa, Illinois. They have great hamburgers!!!! The lodge was absolutely charming; a small... More

We stayed in the Old Wing of the Lodge. Room was very clean and had everything we needed, except we do have to say the room was a bit small. Rooms were reasonably priced. Large pool area for kids and adults. Always a restaurant open. Cute Cafe in Lobby area that serves breakfast/lunch and essentials. Plan to go back soon!

the sunset cabin that we had was a true log cabin. It was very rustic and kind of dark and typical of stepping back in time. Thankfully, a few modern amenities like air conditioning and TV. If you are looking for a luxury hotel this is not it. If you're wanting a stay in a state park and rustic charm... More

Thanks so much for visiting Starved Rock and sharing your comments. I'm guessing you missed the cafe as we do have the bug spray, aspirin and other toiletries for sale in this area. Perhaps we need to make them a little more visible as they are behind the counter at this point. I am very sorry you did not experience... More

Nostalgia abounds in this lovely old lodge, built in the 1930's. The rooms are and reasonably priced. This is an excellent location next to Starved Rock State Park. The staff were exceedingly friendly and helpful. There was a tornado warning my first night at the lodge and we all had to shelter in the basement. The staff handled this crisis... More
