I had difficulty on our first night explaining my gluten intolerance and received a disappointing dinner. After speaking to the very helpful manager, who had excellent English, he prepared a gluten-free menu specially and we had an excellent GF Vietnamese meal. We found the menu confusing as it wasn't clear that some dishes were suitable for two people.
We had a lovely sunset cruise with chocolates and liqueurs.
Overall, a very pleasant stay.
While staying at the resort we made use of the spa (for massages), strolled around the scenic gardens and went on a very interesting Mekong river cruise with our own personal guide. Highly recommended and can't be faulted!
Unfortunately our outlook on this resort changed very quickly, the pathways to the huts were broken and most of the lights were smashed. The rooms were a reasonable size yet the beds were very hard and uncomfortable, also we were provided with dirty bed sheets and dressing gowns.
We had allergens which was provided to the hotel before our stay and during, there were very limited options for both gluten free and vegan. The catering staff were very lovely.
For our included breakfast, we were shocked to find the “fresh fruit” was covered in flies with a air con machine blowing air onto all the food…
On a tour of the grounds around the hotel, we were shocked by how unkempt the are was, at the bird viewing stage the area Infront was all flattened and not a pleasant view. The area of plants infront of the hotel onto the lake was full of rubbish which would be easily cleared with a net (picture attached).
There was litter all around the grounds.
The showers were not working properly, going from extremely hot to cold as well as the pressure changing throughout the shower.
We were provided with mosquito nets above the bed, unfortunately these had holes throughout the netting and also had a large centipede that fell out when bringing the net down.
Before bed time we discovered two live cockroaches in the bedding, which then disappeared under the covers, we were unwilling to search under the mattress as we were having to sleep the night there and were worried about finding more bugs there.
The hotel was advertised with a game area and gym, this was all broken and neglected, would be better off binned.
The reason for the one star if for the restaurant staff, who were so pleasant throughout our stay. without these members of staff we would have rated a 0 if possible.
But well worth the visit and lunch.
Every Villa is very well designed and well maintained.
One can do fishing from his balcony above the river.
Many fruits and vegetables, all organic. You can pick up some fruits from the trees.
Really loved the place and enjoyed a lot with family.
Team is very helpful and supportive.
Locally it is very interesting, but I do suggest a one night stay you would not really have chance to really explore it. We had three days out on the bikes and found quite a few short cuts (not shown on the map you are given) and we discovered a lot in the town of Cai Be. It takes about 20 minutes to cycle into the town but is easy and flat. You can park your bikes under the bridge (you can't miss it) you pay a very small charge to have them looked after and you can look around the market and shops. There are not many places to go for food or drink, but there are a couple, most of the better places are on
the road into town.
For information if you go out of the Hotel and turn left the road goes no-where. You really have to go to the right, not far along the road you might see a very attractive looking entrance with a couple of sleepy looking guards. We stopped outside the gates and the guards beckoned us in, we played a quick game of charades, and it was quickly clear this was a place to eat and drink!! Now, you can't tell from the road but it is in fact a massive oasis inside with a huge cafe and also a restaurant set on a lake, and beautiful grounds it was AMAZING, because you just don't expect it. There are in fact TWO of these places along this road, and the other one is equally hidden away, so one is about 1000 yards from the Hotel on the main road, the other one is about 2 km. It has to be said they don't speak English in here, so we did have a few funny moments, but all part of the fun of exploring Vietnam.
Back to the Hotel and the food in the restaurant is very good, there is a good choice for your evening meal, the staff are excellent. We did go on the River Evening Cruise evening meal, with singers, and a six course meal. It was our anniversary and we did enjoy it, but we felt it was very expensive, and also the guide/rep from the Hotel who goes with you did tend to sit on our shoulder, and pointing out bananas on a boat or whatever, was not really that interesting, especially when we were trying to eat and chat. The food was nice, the drinks were poor, one free beer when you are paying £125 is quite simply tight! We both thought it was ok, but again could have been greatly improved. The seating on the boat was uncomfortable! A cushion or two would not have gone a miss at this resort.
We read on TA on one review about someone having a bad driver for the trip from Saigon, so I emailed the Hotel and made it very clear that we wanted a good driver, that of course doesn't always make any difference, but to be fair, both our drivers in each direction were excellent. Very careful drivers in comfortable cars. It is £50 each way. There are in fact two roads (which we didn't know) one local road which is busy and not that quick, and another toil road which is a dual carriageway and quiet. The toil road is obviously quicker, but less to see. The toil road takes slightly under two hours the other road it is more like 2 hours 30 mins. I doubt you can explain to the drivers which you want as they don't speak any English at all, but you might be able to request it in an email.
All in all we really enjoyed our 4 nights here, we have seen everything we want to see in Cai Be so for that reason we probably won't go back, but I would certainly recommend the Hotel, the small suggestions I have mentioned are certainly not reasons not to visit but hopefully they might think about them as we do think they would improve the Hotel a lot.
Thanks To the Hotel and staff for an excellent time.
