We booked a package with TUI and you do not pay the resort tax as it is included. We stayed in the large block at the rear and honestly for the price we paid it was excellent value for money. The main complaints I have seen are from American holiday makers who pay more. Rooms were cleaned every day except Friday. Pools were great. We had a car but took a Uber to universal studios as it was easier and only about 8 dollars each way. Parking is 20 dollars. Don't know what you paid but we paid £1690.00 for 2 adults and one teenager including car hire. Most people took shuttle to Disney. If free car hire is included take the car but buy your insurance before you go online. Do not be forced to take car hire insurance when picking up the car. It is not compulsory. Buy a cheap date nav with USA maps and don't forget to have notes for tolls on motorway. Ate in Applebee's, Dunkin donuts and ponderosa. Let me know if you need anything else.

If you have a Costco membership you should consider renting a small car through their website. Other warehouse companies like Bjs and Sams should have similar pricing. It will be cheaper in the long run especially since you will want to explore Florida a bit more. The "waterpark" will get old fast. The resort may have a shuttle to Disney so you may want to inquire if its free or what the extra cost is. Pin trading is also a fun activity. You can buy a lot of Disney pins off ebay and trade them in the park. Cheap but very entertaining. Be sure to get it shipped via USPS Priority as some sellers will take a while to ship. Other activities you can consider (Orlando Go Card, Groupon activities like mini golf are great, Dinner shows like Medieval Times, Outrageous Magic show etc) Check out disboards for additional details. Hopefully your stay at the resort is more pleasant then ours.
