I have been a Choice Rewards elite member for years, as I use the hotels for business and personal travel, so I book almost all of my rooms through them and their corporate site. On May 10, 2022, I booked a king suite with jacuzzi at the Meriden, CT Quality Inn for the night of Saturday, May 21, 2022 for $158.28 after taxes and fees. I received the confirmation email instantly. I arrived at the hotel around 8:30pm on Saturday, May 21. The person at the front desk (manager?) asked if I had the right hotel because I was not in the system. I pulled out my phone and opened the confirmation email. I told him that I had booked a king suite with jacuzzi online. Immediately, he became very rude and confrontational with me. He said that they do not book jacuzzi rooms online, so he didn’t know how I did that. I showed him the confirmation email, and he said that he would not accept it. He said that he had a room to book, but they do not book them online, and would only give it to me for $200 plus taxes and fees. I told him that it wasn’t like I had hacked the website: I had a confirmation email and numbers from Choice Hotels corporate website where the room had been booked. He said “I guess you can call them, but I will not honor that rate.” I responded “with all due respect, this sounds like your problem and you need to call them because I have a confirmation email right here, so you need to figure out what went wrong in your system.” He stepped away from the desk and went into the back to call someone, during which my spouse heard him yelling repeatedly “I am not going to honor that rate.” When he eventually returned to the desk, he told me that they had a call cancelling my reservation, logged in their system under my first name. I stepped away to call Choice Hotels myself, and he kept arguing and trying to interrupt me as I spoke to them. At this point, it was clear to me that I was unwilling to stay at this hotel whether Choice Hotels could resolve this or not. I went to the parking lot to continue the call without confrontation. My call disconnected after 30 minutes, and I called back to be told that I was #22 in line. At this point, it was nearing 10pm, and my spouse and I decided to just drive back home to another state, 90 minutes through the night, since we were being denied our reservation. This was our first night alone together since our baby was born six months ago, and was a special trip for us to celebrate while grandma watched our baby for the night. I don’t know when we will have another opportunity like this. This opportunity was completely ruined by this hotel staff member. Calling customer service again the next day, they were able to determine that my hotel was cancelled at the hotel, by the hotel, and not through the Choice Hotels network, which is why I did not receive a cancelation email. Choice Hotels compensated me for the issue and promised to launch an investigation of the hotel and its staff for the incident. This is the worst experience I ever have had at a hotel and in customer service. Reading other reviews after the fact, I see now that others have experienced major issues with the staff and hotel as well. I hope that everyone is contacting corporate to file complaints. This behavior, in my opinion, warrants Choice Hotels pulling the franchise from the operator and taking them out of the hotel network.…
Rudeness was the key word. From start to finish. I am very aware if the ugly American syndrome. But don’t you Dare treat people less because they have different shades. Doing it over the phone just makes you a Coward VINCENT
Front desk person very rude, busy with personal calls to India. Entire 2nd floor was full of tobacco smell. We could not stay. Hotel will not refund. They advertise continental breakfast, when you arrive they tell you that is not the case.
We have stayed there twice because the rooms are clean, 99% of the staff is nice and the breakfast is good. Vinny is the manager and last year he had an attitude the whole time we were there. This time he recognized us and greeted us but furious when he found out what we paid for the room. My friend had an issue with his credit card (he is from the UK). He SAID he ran my friends credit card but we later found out that he had not! Then we paid for one night cash and then went up to our room and and booked the room for $67.00 a night (originally we were paying $75. When Vinny found out he yelled and cursed at my friend saying he was refusing the the booking. We called the sight we used and they said he could NOT do that. They called and spoke to him and then he did 180% turn of attitude. But I said something to him. I said you were upset that my friend got upset at you at his card not going through and YOU did ten times worse by cursing and trying to refuse the booking. I said but you should be the professional here and you were anything but. I said you did not like my friend getting upset with you but you did worse. IF Vinny was not there this place would get a 5 from me everytime.…
We stayed here for 5 nights. Room was relatively clean. Staff always helpful. Breakfast turned out to be a challenge. They were out of eggs every morning. Had to go to front desk to request them. Didn’t make any difference what time we went there. It would take them a good 10 minutes to bring more out, but never very much. They ran out of creamer, cups, forks, syrup, bagels, bread, danish (small ones, cut in half), water, butter, etc. as well, which was frustrating, especially for a Mom and her two boys. Once requested, supplies were replenished fairly quickly.
Front Desk staff person was very friendly and helpful. Hotel common areas were clean. Breakfast was standard fare but well stocked and well staffed (by same guy from the front desk). Room (King Suite) was clean. Decor was dated. It appears the rooms are being renovated, this one had not been yet. This was a fine place for a 1 night stay.
We have stayed at this hotel many times and for the price you can’t beat it. Rooms are always clean so is the bathroom. Always find the staff very pleasant. People complain about the continental breakfast but it’s okay if you think your going to get an extravagant meal just remember that the low rate for a room can’t support a full restaurant quality breakfast. One time we made a last minute reservation and had to take a smoking room. Being a non smoker the room does smell like smoke which you should expect. If value is what you want this is the place.
I was planning to stay at this hotel last Friday night but I ended up cancelling my plans because I found another hotel that had much larger rooms and the phone call I made to this hotel had me a bit concerned ... When I called the main desk of the hotel to confirm reservations I made online, I felt that the staff member I spoke with was not very friendly or helpful over the phone. Also, I asked some questions about the area (I was planning to go to a concert in Wallingford) and I felt staff were not very knowledgeable about the area.
First of all they called me to see if I was still coming an hour before I was getting there and didn’t put the A/C on in the room so when I arrived road weary the room was 100 degrees and smelled like a dirty old man! The air didn’t seem to be pumping cold air either! My second room wasn’t quite as bad. I went downstairs to get moved and they tried to tell me that they were sold out because they didn’t have any other rooms at my price. After demanding a room change they gave me a handicapped suite on another floor. The bathroom was a challenge because the shower head didn’t stay up. In addition the wallpaper was peeling and the towel rack was falling off the wall. I asked my daughter’s boyfriend to get two extra towels and the manager had him go to the basement with him to retrieve them! Really???? Then the next morning the breakfast was a joke! They rationed everything! When my daughter and her boyfriend went down there was barely enough food for two people and then when I went there with my husband they had to make more sausages. We took the rest of the eggs and told them, then four more people came in expecting more food but they hadn’t said anything so they had to wait for the woman to microwave up more stuff. Were they hoping that if there was nothing there people would just leave? Every time I stay at the Berlin turnpike motels it the same cheap behavior! The bed was comfortable. Another amusing thing since this was a suite it had two tv’s but only one remote! Also, this hotel has smoking rooms but instead of making one floor smoking they have one side of each floor as smoking so you can smell it when you get off the elevator. Second floor ice machine broken with a sign to go to the third floor and tacky signs in the breakfast room saying do not take food to the room. Penny wise pound foolish!…
We were traveling through New England, and we needed a place to stay on our way to Cape Cod. The price was affordable, and that is why we stayed. Everything was fine, and our needs were met. There wasn’t anything that stood out as exceptional, but it served its purpose. We checked in, showered, slept, were safe, ate breakfast, and checked out. No one was overly friendly nor rude.
