Detailed Reviews
This Carmel is in great location at the heart of Santa Monica and walkable to pretty much anywhere in the area. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The reception area is an attractive ’40’s period style, the rest of the hotel follows this style but is tired and a bit shabby.
Our room was small, with a beautifully made and comfortable bed, clean bathroom, the only furniture being a tall set of drawers and a closet. It was clean but the decor needed serious updating.. There were many larger rooms available at the time so we were surprised we weren’t upgraded.
The only problem we had here, was that when we asked for a late check out - 4.00pm as we had a late flight, they said they weren’t allowed to give late check outs but said we could check out at 1.00pm. Given there were only eight rooms occupied in this four floor hotel, and at the time LA was shut down due to the coronovirus, this was to say the least, disappointing.

We stayed at this hotel for 2 nights to visit Los Angeles and upon arrival, there is compulsory valet parking. The location was very close to the sea and Santa Monica pier and excellent transport links into Los Angeles. The room we were allocated was very noisy due to the generators and A/C units so we asked to be relocated which the staff did with no fuss at all. From outside, the hotel looks lovely , however once inside, it is evident that the whole place is very tired and urgently requires updating, The corridors had a strange odour this may have been due to the very worn carpets, rooms do not have coffee machines meaning you have to leave the hotel to get refreshments. Overall would rather have stayed in another hotel even if this meant higher cost.

PROS: excellent location in Santa Monica. Close to the beach. Very clean. “Affordable” in comparison to other hotels in the area.
CONS: because of its location, it is very loud at night (traffic and people screaming). The hotel itself has thin walls and one can hear absolutely everything. The entire hotel is very very dated, the room with one queen bed is extremely small. Only 2 feet from the end of the bed to the wall! The bed is super uncomfortable , like sleeping on the floor. Covid aside, the room has ZERO amenities (no coffee maker, no refrigerator, no microwave or plastic disposable cups). At this time there is no housekeeping service, I personally was not even offered new towels ( 3 nights) or garbage pick up service. There is a musty smell in the room and all around the hotel. If you are 20 and have no problems sleeping at night .... then stay here.

Wingstomdreams, Thank you for taking time to post a review from a recent stay with us at Hotel Carmel. We really appreciate your mention of our location and pricing value that makes Hotel Carmel a great option for a visit to Santa Monica. We apologize for not meeting your standards of room amenities. It's tough for us not to have those items as well. However, due to the pandemic we've decided it's best not to have items in the rooms. All guests are told at check-in that they can request additional toiletries, linen, and towels. We do offer Housekeeping services (trash pick-up, change bedding, restroom cleaning, etc) upon request only. It’s all about Safety for both guests and team members. We are in the process of looking into placing all of the amenities back in the rooms. Our hotel also have several restaurants and a deli on property where you can get breakfast/lunch/dinner, coffee, tea, water, etc. We do offer order-to go and we will be adding our Room Service options back as soon as the County will let us.

I came to town for the American Film Market, and didn’t feel like spending $800 a night for a beachfront hotel room. I found this place for $335 - and I don’t think I will ever stay anywhere else when I come to Santa Monica. this is a classic boutique hotel, open since 1946 under the same name. It is all of one block from the beach, with the lobby so beautiful you want to take pictures and rooms that are comfortable, clean and spacious. I slept better in this bed than I do in my bed at home. And the staff is wonderful, especially Dimitri at the front desk. He made me feel like a valued friend, and had great recommendations for restaurants. If you book directly with the hotel, there’s no “resort fee,” and parking is $20 a night – less than half what it is at the pricey beachfront hotels. I’ve stayed at some of the fancy beachfront hotels before, but even if the price was the same I believe I would still choose the Hotel Carmel - it’s just such a cool, and such a wonderful, place.

Hotel Carmel is situated in a perfect location in Santa Monica, one block from 3rd St and two blocks from the beach.
Very good value but the hotel is a little “tired”.
It’s clean and the beds are comfortable
Recommend.
One issue is $30+ valet charge. It’s convenient but there’s a public car park next door for $20 all day

I visited Hotel Carmel over the summer for a fun trip with friends! We picked this hotel because we thought it was very nice looking, had a good deal on rooms, and it was a good distance away from the beach and other local restaurants.
Sad to report that when we showed up the front desk service was not very nice, our rooms weren't ready (even though it was past our check-in time), and they almost overcharged my friend's card before she caught it. The front desk workers really didn't care much about greeting us kindly, apologizing for making us wait 40 minutes for our room, and they just seemed like they didn't want to be working.
Overall, without the front desk service, the hotel was nice. Maybe they could think about switching their check-in services to digital/kiosk style.

Great location but possibly the only thing the hotel has to offer. The rooms are extremely outdated - feels as though you're stepping back 25 years in time. The website photos are quite misleading, they definitely flatter the hotel more than they should!
The first room we were allocated the heating didn't work. They did offer a change with no hassle (upon going to reception the receptionist was straightening her hair) even in the new room the heating unit was extremely loud.
The hotel had a horrible smell to it, the smell lingered on our clothes when we moved to our next location. Staff generally okay, some receptionists were a lot more friendly and helpful than others. Porters and concerige really nice!
Parking was expensive.

Hotel Carmel has a great convenient location to dining, entertainment and the beach. Overall the hotel is average and a fair price for the location. The rooms have been updated and clean however the bathrooms are tiny with limited counter space. The elevator is tiny and fits one or two people with luggage comfortably at best. The front desk staff were nice but not overly friendly.
The lobby and common areas could all stand to be updated as they give off a very 1970 vibe.
The overall value of the hotel and the location make up for the lack of common area updating and the rooms and beds are very comfy which was a lovely surprise.

This hotel was very disappointing! I was expecting much more! The room was very small and I had a huge problem getting it cleaned! I arrived on Saturday and after numerous complaints the room was finally cleaned late Tuesday afternoon! They did offer to change my room on Monday night as all the cleaning staff had gone home but this was definitely not convenient for me. There are renovations happening so there was a lot of noise through the day. The hotel has no concierge and they could not even offer me a map of the area when I arrived. There is also no cafe, restaurant or laundry facilities. When I asked if there was a laundromat nearby, I was told no but they recommended a company, called Fresh Fold Laundry, that would pick up my laundry and return it 24 hours later. The price seemed expensive at $3 US per pound plus a service fee of $9.99 US but I thought I did not have that much and it should not be too bad. However my laundry did not get returned until 48 hours later and my cotton laundry bag that I had sent the laundry in was missing! This bag was very precious to me as I had bought it in India several years before! I reported it to the front desk but they said they had no affiliation with the company and really just did not care! I insisted they ring the laundry company who denied any knowledge of my bag, even though the person on the front desk verified they she accepted the laundry in that bag! On top of that they charged me $65 US which equated to $106 Australian! Also the clothes that were returned were not clean! When I questioned this I was told it was a "fluff and fold" service and if I had wanted detailed cleaning I should have requested it for an additional fee!!
Another thing I was not aware of with this hotel was they charge a destination fee of an additional $23 US per day! Apparently this is normal in some US hotels to cover use of facilities, but this hotel does not have any!! Sadly this hotel caused my holiday across America to end in a very negative way! As a senior woman of 71 years travelling alone, I could not wait to home!

WORST SERVICE EXPERIENCE. I would not recommend Hotel Carmel. I am frustrated with this place because I wanted to like Hotel Carmel, it's quaint and had character but the customer service was the worst I've received, hope to never experience again. I paid third party, arrived May 14-15 and took a loong time to check in, which is fine, I wasn't in a rush, but it was strange that I had to fill everything once more, provide my card and ID (standard). Once in the room, concierge came up and told me he had to swiped my card and charge me since he had not (despite having paid third party which had already been reiterated and confirmed downstairs). Figured it was for deposit. Wrong, charged for much more than I had already paid for the night, which was substantial. Then went downstairs and showed the transaction, another concierge assisted, reversed the transaction but took a looong time, guys I'm not kidding you, and I am patient. Told me the valet for $38 (it said $25 valet on my email receipt with the 3rd party but oh well) and resort fee will be waived once I check out. The next morning I mention it to the lady and she was oblivious, said it was already charged, she wasn't aware and I would need to speak to the the concierge, manager that night. I asked for a written email since I didn't want to go through the hassle a third time when I called, she did not want to, although it's a standard method of documentation amongst customer and company. Between the lack of communication, professionalism, training, documentation, process, it's a zero star.

No. It's valet parking. Think it's about $23 a night
Oops very late answer. We used Uber - quick and pretty cheap.
No - we could see the lights on the pier from our room but no ocean views
Agree with above, we used Uber in LA and they were great!
