I needed some serious quiet time and hoped a retreat would jump start my yoga practice and I could learn meditation firsthand. As they clearly point out on their site, their yoga and meditation is part of their spiritual practice so don't expect workout yoga. The hour and a half sessions consist of energy work (tightening and relaxing muscle groups),...

Multiple visits to this beautiful retreat center for a relaxing and affordable visit. There are many options for visitors from attending workshops, learning and practicing yoga and meditation, find that vegetarian meals can be fabulous. The Expanding Light is absolutely lovely. That said, do not expect a "hotel" experience here, as it is not a hotel. The beauty of this location lies in it's simplicity and rural location. Simple but comfortable rooms, healthy but (usually) tasty vegetarian meals, and lots of yoga and meditation classes each day. We have visited here numerous times as we...

Nestled in the Sierra Nevada foothills is the opportunity to experience this exceptional yoga and meditation retreat. Along with the offerings of twice daily sessions of exercise, yoga and meditation you can crash in a comfortable cottage and eat from 3 tasty vegetarian buffets. Surrounded by a pastoral spiritual community of about 300, and with deer wandering the grounds, the...

I just got back and it was my second time there. I love the food, the environment and everything about it. I opted for a shared room which is dorm type, but that's ok. It was like a little community and I met some great people and learned some good lessons. I left feeling recharged, at ease and healthier from...

I love expanding light. I have been there three times so far and can't wait to go back. Are the rooms fancy? No, but that's not the reason to go there. The community and grounds are beautiful and peaceful. And that's exactly how I feel after each visit! On our last visit, we bought the global cookbook in the gift...

I love the expanding light. This was my third visit. Once again they did not disappoint. This a great place for recharging the human battery and getting back on track from the stresses of life through yoga, meditation and peaceful surroundings. The vegetarian food is good, the rooms are simple and comfortable. The training staff is superior.

I started visiting in 2005, first as a program participant, then as a karma yogini, and several times for personal retreats. In those years the quality of the food has gone from very good to very meager and bland. Yet costs have risen astronomically. Two years ago my husband and I could camp, (walk 1/4 mile to the toilet), for...

We've stayed at the Expanding Light a bunch of times. It's the sort of place one likes to come back to again and again for a break from the bustle of everyday life. We always stay in Serenity House; the rooms are simple and comfortable, with twin beds; sort of like dorm rooms. The bathroom's down the hall, but that...

“12 rooms are two person shared with bathrooms shared (5) for a max capacity of 25 guests.”

“Most rooms have shared bathrooms except Serenity House which has private ones. Rooms are on the expensive side. Cheaper choice are the "cabins" which are pretty small, but fine for two, but note that you will have to walk (outside) to the shared bathroom facilities. Great when you are young and healthy, not as much fun if you're getting older!”

“Serenity rooms are nice but can't afford. Camping used to be a good option, but that costs too much also.”
 of 5 bubbles JanetN917, 24 Apr 2013 | Read review
“The summers can be muggy and hot; consider the 'deluxe' rooms at Harmony House for better A/C during July and August. Other than that, the low-cost Serenity House rooms are wonderful, and if you schedule your trip during an unbusy time (like we did: right after Memorial Day), you may have the entire building to yourself.”
