Very basic. Spartan. Has car park at side. High glycemic carbs breakfast of Keurig tea, coffee, sweeteners, milk, orange juice, cakes, instant oats, oranges, red apples. No low glycemic or high protein options. Touch-free bin. Trays. White room was small. 'Bathroom' tiny: shower & toilet. To access and exit shower one has to climb over person sitting on toilet. No room safe. No window locks. Tiny rectangular hand basin under low glass shelf makes toothbrushing requires flexibility and accurate aim. Immovable extremely heavy bed without wheels or casters was pushed up against 2 walls. Between bed and walls the carpet has not been cleaned for a long time. hard to clean/check for cleanliness. More of a 'bed for the night' place. Helpful front desk staff and on site 24 hrs. Night-time entry by key card. Room not really big enough for two people, contained: extremely heavy bed-base had sharp corners and it was immovable, with comfortable mattress, 2 pillows, sheets, duvet/comforter - bed pushed up against two walls; 1 chair chrome-legged uncomfortable chair; hairdryer; good lit face mirror; wall full-length mirror; high, very quiet air-con. which needed cleaning; small rectangular handbasin under low shelf; fixed wall shower; towel rails; 1 small bedside 2 shelf unit; alarm clock; about 10 sockets; 2 USB sockets; single glazed wired-glass windows; view of brick wall only; toilet paper; facial tissues; soap; shampoo; moisturizer; towels; blinds in room; obscure glass window in shower; TV; walls between rooms not sound proof; telephone; ceiling light; 1 bed-side wall light; 1 'desk' light; 8 clothes hangers hung from bar on wall-mounted 'EVO' system unit; small glass desk and shelf EVO system unit; 1 luggage rack. Small bottles of water available at front desk on request; safe at front desk; carpet in need of clean; room key cards had RFID sleeves. Supplied ironing-board on request - could not close it down so we kept moving it around so we could move around in the room. Noticed: cleaner used cloth to wipe dust off stair-treads before using same cloth to then clean reception seats! No microwave, no refrigerator, no coffee/tea-making facilities in room. No elevator. This might suit a solo traveler/business person without any dietary needs who just needs a room for the night and will be out of the hotel all day. I could not believe my husband thought this would be suitable or keep his wife happy for a whole week.
The rooms are small and it's a short walk to the Convention Center. This hotel is outstanding for a single occupant, especially for a short stay. The value is tremendous, especially compared to the large convention center adjacent hotels. It's a nice boutique experience that cost me about 1/4 of the jacked up convention hotel rates. I walked but an Uber ride to the Convention center is $5. I literally paid $129 vs over $400 for a mildly more convenient hotel. Let me emphasize - the rooms are very small but entirely adequate for a progressive minded traveler. Don't bring your significant other. Don't bring your kids. Bring yourself, enjoy their superior service and professionalism, and dig the character of the place. It's $12 to park in a lot immediately adjacent to the hotel. Also, just behind the hotel and slightly east is The Birdcage coffee house - a superior one in my opinion. Very eclectic decor and they serve Italian crack - i.e., Lavazza!! I'll stay here every time I have a convention to attend in Long Beach which is about once a year.
We were in town for a wedding and the people at The Varden could not have been more helpful. I'd mistakenly booked the wrong night but fortunately they had a room and they let us leave our bags in the lobby until it was clean, and then took our bags up for us so they were there when we came back, as well as calling me to let us know the room was ready. Everyone was so kind, personable and warm. It's a cute little boutique, old world hotel, modernized, and very clean. The rooms are small but charming and full of light. Close to everything, too - walking distance from Pine Avenue and the Promenade, as well as to the Queen Mary. A longer stroll will take you to the Long Beach Museum of Art, and even Belmont Shore. There was fruit, yogurt, coffee, juice, and pastries available for breakfast. I heard there's a happy hour too, but we weren't around for it. Next time! I would stay here again in a heartbeat.
If you are looking for something different in Long Beach, stay at the Varden. Do not let the outside dissuade you. This is not a place for lots of people, children for example. The rooms are very small, with all space used to the maximum. It is also not for a long stay, but for a one or two night stay for two people, you can not beat the ambience and the hospitality afforded you by the wonderful staff. They have a cocktail hour at 5:00.and a fully stocked coffee and danish bar in the morning. For those who still read newspapers, they are there also. The place is all white, bright and lovely!!!
My family reserved a room at The Varden for a wedding on The Queen Mary. We selected the hotel because it is much more accessible and walking distant to nearly everything in Long Beach. Value is good, especially with cocktail hour and continental breakfast they provide. What distinguishes this property is the exceptional service - a refreshing change from predictable chain hotels! Our family appreciated the owner / manager's commitment to guest satisfaction, which likely means a return stay at The Varden.

The Varden has a lot right next to it for parking with no extra charge so all is good on that point. Ask for a darker room if they have one, but we've never had a problem with noise or too much light and we stay on New Year's Eve. It's a boutique hotel concentrating on Service which is GREAT. Very compact rooms with high-end bedding and toiletries. It does have a tv, free wifi and wine in the early evening and coffee and continental breakfast in the morning. Lovely personal owners and staff. Have a great stay in Long Beach!
